German Society At The Close Of The Middle Ages And Its Effects On The Reformation, Walter Rosin Jun 1953

German Society At The Close Of The Middle Ages And Its Effects On The Reformation, Walter Rosin

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis will be to discuss the social conditions prevalent at the close of the Middle Ages which are involved in the German Reformation, the role which they played in bringing it about, and also to trace the effects which the social factor had in assuring the success of the Reformation.

The Metaphysical Bases Of The Doctrine Of God In Aquinas And Augustine, Donald P. Meyer Jun 1953

The Metaphysical Bases Of The Doctrine Of God In Aquinas And Augustine, Donald P. Meyer

Bachelor of Divinity

Most basically this thesis is concerned with the problem of schism. It attempts to discover the nature of the opposition between two theologies. Schisms based on statements interpreted grammatically are tragically naïve, on personalities idolatrous. It is theology and the practical consequences of theology which alone can justify schism. And to discover the opposition between theologies requires an analysis of the basis of the statement of that theology.

Incarnation And The Lord's Supper In Luther, Norman Nagel Jun 1953

Incarnation And The Lord's Supper In Luther, Norman Nagel

Bachelor of Divinity

It will be the attempt of this paper to set forth some of the aspects of the parallel between God's dealing with us in Christ and Christ’s dealing with us in His Supper as grasped and expressed by Luther; especially in the controversies concerning the Lord's Supper in the 1520’s. The references are given, with a few Erlangener Ausgabe exceptions, from the Weimarer Ausgabe.

Kierkegaard's Critique Of Hegelian Idealism, Curtis E. Huber Jun 1953

Kierkegaard's Critique Of Hegelian Idealism, Curtis E. Huber

Bachelor of Divinity

The philosophical approach of SØren Kierkegaard has for many years been recognized as one of the outstanding attempts within the Lutheran Church to construct and formulate a Christian philosophy. For this reason alone, there is sufficient merit in almost any examination of his works. This study, however, proposes to examine not exclusively the work of Kierkegaard, but also the background of radical rationalism against; which .he and his theistic existential view was set.

The Eighth Century Prophets - Opinion Of Cultus, Carl Graesser Jr Jun 1953

The Eighth Century Prophets - Opinion Of Cultus, Carl Graesser Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this essay to study the various interpretations of the three eighth-century prophets, Amos, Hosea, Micah, in an effort to determine their attitude ·toward cultus. In particular the present study will direct itself to the question, “Did these men advocate the complete abolition of sacrifice?” This will of necessity include a consideration of the extent to which each prophet made his position clear. In certain areas the prophets have spoken clearly, in others their attitudes may be inferred. On some points it appears that no tenable conclusions can be drawn.

The Meaning Of The Epiphany Season Of The Church Year, John H. Tietjen Jun 1953

The Meaning Of The Epiphany Season Of The Church Year, John H. Tietjen

Bachelor of Divinity

To determine the meaning of the Epiphany Season, I undertook a study of the seasons history, propers, and customs. A study of the history of the season was necessary to understand the factors that produced the present meaning of the season. A. study of the propers of the season was necessary to reveal what the season actually means in the present life of the Church. A study of' the customs of the season was necessary to determine how the Season’s meaning is reflected and augmented by the piety of the people. And so, in presenting the meaning of the Epiphany …

A History Of Missouri Synod Work In Japan, Arthur Strege Jun 1953

A History Of Missouri Synod Work In Japan, Arthur Strege

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present thesis is entitled: “A History of Missouri Synod Work in Japan." It gives a brief history of the work done by members of the Missouri Synod in Japan itself from September, 1948, to January, 1953. In order that this thesis might give a more complete picture, Chapter II will be devoted to an overview of the past activities of the Missouri Synod which led to the opening of the field in Japan in 1948. For a more detailed picture of those activities, the reader would do well to consult the B.D. thesis mentioned above.

This overview will be …

The Employment Of Textual-Critical Methods And Principles By The Revison Committee, E George Krause Jun 1953

The Employment Of Textual-Critical Methods And Principles By The Revison Committee, E George Krause

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

In this thesis, then we shall first review the problem of textual criticism, with its implications for the translator. In such a situation the reviser or translator must have certain criteria to guide him.

Anglican And Orthodox Reunion, Milton Rudnick Jun 1953

Anglican And Orthodox Reunion, Milton Rudnick

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Progress in These efforts is apparent particularly since the last decade of the Nineteenth Century. This paper will study the Anglican-Orthodox relations with regard to reunion. The first section will deal with the factors which encourage reunion efforts. Then we will briefly sketch the actual negotiations themselves, as they have taken place since the Seventeenth Century. The next section will discuss the doctrinal issues involved in Anglican-Orthodox Reunion. Our concluding section will deal with the principal problems which are raised by Anglican-Orthodox Reunion Attempts.

The New Testament Attitude Toward Government, David Koenig Jun 1953

The New Testament Attitude Toward Government, David Koenig

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

One such form of life in the secular world is that of government. Practically every Christian, like other individuals, is a citizen--or at least an inhabitant--of some particular nation. And every nation has some form of government by which the inhabitants are controlled. These forms may vary widely, from a total dictatorship or monarchy to a thorough-going democracy; from a highly-organized state which concerns itself with even the minute matters of individual life to a loose organization whose only concern is the preservation of outward order. No matter what the form, some relationship must be assumed by individual Christians toward …

An Evalutation Of The Theological Content Of This Is The Life, Victor Constein Jun 1953

An Evalutation Of The Theological Content Of This Is The Life, Victor Constein

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

Therefore this present evaluation limits itself to the study of a single area. This is the question: What is the theological content of the individual episodes of THIS IS THE LIFE? To do this, each episode is treated as a single total experience. Involved are the members of the Fischer family, their relatives and acquaintances. Each experience is treated as a unit, consisting of three interrelated elements.. These are: 1) An identifiable situation. 2) An identifiable response. 3) The psychological process which unites the situation and the response.

The Common Service Adapted According To Rsv Principles, Arthur Carl Piepkorn May 1953

The Common Service Adapted According To Rsv Principles, Arthur Carl Piepkorn

Concordia Theological Monthly

Here with a committee of last semester's culture-hour group, ''Twentieth Century Worship," seeks to demonstrate in an actual worship experience the problems that the introduction of the Revised Standard Version in the worship of the Church would bring with it. It involves more than substituting a different text for the Epistle and the Holy Gospel. The Lutheran rite is thoroughly Biblical. A modification of the vernacular Biblical basis requires a thoroughgoing revision of the whole service, ordinary and propers, collects and creed as well as lessons and psalmody. This service represents an attempt at such a revision.

We Conquer Death, Eduard Ellwein May 1953

We Conquer Death, Eduard Ellwein

Concordia Theological Monthly

When the golden sun emerges out of the ocean, he casts a shaft of his glorious light across the expanse of the water. The glorious reflection of an unspeakably greater light rests upon the Gospel of St. John: the certainty of our victory over death, the believer's assurance that he has conquered death and possesses eternal life as a present reality. To believe on the Son means to have eternal life.

Are We Really Preaching The Gospel?, Elmer A. Kettner May 1953

Are We Really Preaching The Gospel?, Elmer A. Kettner

Concordia Theological Monthly

With all of our glorying in the Gospel and our striving to retain purity of doctrine, is it possible that there is too little preaching of the Gospel in The Lutheran Church -Missouri Synod? It's not only possible; I fear that it's highly probable. This is not a blanket accusation against every pastor in Synod. One can judge only from the sermons that one hears and reads. Nor is this written to be sensational or critical. In this respect I am perhaps "the chief of sinners"; I have sometimes by-passed the Gospel. The Scriptures remind us to "exhort one another …

Some Phases Of "After His Kind" In The Light Of Modem Science, August C. Rehwaldt May 1953

Some Phases Of "After His Kind" In The Light Of Modem Science, August C. Rehwaldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Some would estimate the number of species of animals to be about 1,073,000. Others say that there are about 3,000,000 species of animals. The wide range of difference between these two estimates is due to the diversity of opinion as to the concept "species." Since evolution is the background of modern biology, the term species is accordingly defined as an evolving group and net as an aggregation with set bounds and limits. Darwin's Origin of Species takes this view. Opposed to this view is that of the Bible, which speaks of natural groups of plants and animals and calls such …

Doctrinal Peculiarities Of The Espistle Of St James, Milo Lee May 1953

Doctrinal Peculiarities Of The Espistle Of St James, Milo Lee

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

This dissertation has attempted to underscore, not only the fact that James has in 3:13-18 a classic passage on the fruits of true wisdom, contrasted by the fruits borne by the wisdom which is from beneath, but also the call to self-examination on the part of those who are engaged actively in the work of the Church to determine honestly before God whether or not they are living and working with that humble spirit which promotes true peace between God and man, on the one hand, and man and his fellows, on the other.

The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner Apr 1953

The Great Physician, Frederic Niedner

Concordia Theological Monthly

When God made man, He used the humblest material and made a supreme creature. Great artists have dipped their brushes into pigments and have painted upon canvas figures that seemed to live. God took the dust of the ground and made of it a body that really lived. And when the Creator had breathed into this body's nostrils the breath of life, man became a living soul. This man's body was fearfully and wonderfully made, perfect in its form and consummate in its functions. Man was possessed of health from head to foot, in mind and body. There was no …

Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt Apr 1953

Thinking Clearly On The Rsv, Arthur Katt

Concordia Theological Monthly

Every new translation of the Holy Bible has met with opposition. "Whenever a translation is made, the question of its authority as over against the authority of the original or of earlier translations naturally arises." This was the experience of St. Jerome back in the 4th and 5th centuries, when he produced the Vulgate. "At first his translation was met with antagonism, and it was even declared to be heretical." This was true particularly also of our beloved, time-honored King James Version. It took nearly half a century for it to find general acceptance, and quite a bit of the …

The Significance Of Luther's Hermeneutics For The Protestant Reformation, Raymond P. Surburg Apr 1953

The Significance Of Luther's Hermeneutics For The Protestant Reformation, Raymond P. Surburg

Concordia Theological Monthly

The Protestant Reformation, called by Roman Catholics the Protestant Revolt, is generally conceded to have been one of the most significant movements in the last two thousand years of world history. Historians who have treated the Reformation have interpreted it from at least four distinct points of view: the religious-political, the rationalist, the liberal-romantic, and the economic-evolutionary. A current scholar, Rosenstock-Huessy, lists the Protestant Reformation as the first of four political revolutions occurring between 1517 and 1918.
