Some Observations On Current Cosmological Theories, Paul A. Zimmerman Jul 1953

Some Observations On Current Cosmological Theories, Paul A. Zimmerman

Concordia Theological Monthly

It has been rightly said that there are fashions in science as in all other fields. This fact has been demonstrated lately by the large number of articles dealing with cosmological problems that have appeared in the last two years in both popular and scientific journals. There has been striking evidence of increased interest in cosmology, the study of the universe, and in cosmogony, the study of the origin of the universe and the world. One of the most popular programs of the British Broadcasting System in 1950 was a series of lectures on the origin of the world and …

Luther And The Apology, 1530 To 1531, Ronald Diener Jun 1953

Luther And The Apology, 1530 To 1531, Ronald Diener

Bachelor of Divinity

There are two primary concerns in the describing of and commenting on Martin Luther's marks and notes in Philipp Melanchthon's Apology of the Augsburg Confession. The Augsburg Confession was a public document, subscribed by evangelicals at Augsburg. Whereas the Apology also was, begun as such a public document, it was not allowed to be read at the Diet. There was no opportunity for the Apology to become a rallying point as the Augsburg Confession was for the evangelicals and as Pontifical Confutation was for the papal party. The Apology was a private document and bore the name of Philipp Melanchthon, …

The Christian Missionary: A Free Man Self-Enslaved To All For The Sake Of The Gospel : An Exegetical Study Of I Corinthians 9:19-23, Graeme M. Rosenau Jun 1953

The Christian Missionary: A Free Man Self-Enslaved To All For The Sake Of The Gospel : An Exegetical Study Of I Corinthians 9:19-23, Graeme M. Rosenau

Bachelor of Divinity

In 1 Corinthians 9 :l9-23 Saint Paul concisely summarized the principles that guided his missionary approach to the unconverted. Since he was both an Apostle one an eminently successful missionary, this pericope is a precious piece of missionary literature. Yet, as one examines books dealing with the subject of missions, he finds but a few passing, references to the passage. It is the purpose of this thesis to examine at greater length Paul's missionary tactics and the theology behind them as these are expressed in l Corinthians 9:l9-23. It is primarily an exegetical undertaking, but a chapter is included to …

Marsiglio De Padua And The Defensor Pacis, Luther T. Engelbrecht Jun 1953

Marsiglio De Padua And The Defensor Pacis, Luther T. Engelbrecht

Bachelor of Divinity

The life of Marsiglio de Padua is a considerable problem in itself. Opinions concerning the details of his birth, activity, and death vary widely. Each scholar that writes on the subject refutes in some way all those that precede him. Scholz and Haller seem almost to go out of their way to contradict each other. The English and American scholars are slightly more polite to each other than their German colleagues, but they, too, disagree widely. I have tried to present the cases of the various scholars and to determine as much as possible the most plausible solution to the …

The Lodge Question As Viewed By The Churches Affiliated With The National Council Of Churches Of Christ In The United States Of America, Walter W. Warmann Jun 1953

The Lodge Question As Viewed By The Churches Affiliated With The National Council Of Churches Of Christ In The United States Of America, Walter W. Warmann

Bachelor of Divinity

These churches are therefore not now concerned about the lodge question. · But they will be when they are awakened to the inroads secret fraternal societies have made into their ranks just as the church of England was awakened by Mr. Hannah. The purpose of this study, then, is to show the position of the churches belonging to the National Council of Churches on the lodge question. To each statement of position I am adding a brief history and statistical report of the respective church since this information may in part reflect the position on the lodge question which the …

The Chrisitian Attitude Toward Birth Control, Don C. Preisinger Jun 1953

The Chrisitian Attitude Toward Birth Control, Don C. Preisinger

Bachelor of Divinity

This thesis grew out of a paper presented to the Northern Alberta Pastors’ Conference or the Alberta-British Columbia District of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod. The discussion showed that many of the pastors were poorly informed on the matter, and not a few based their views mainly upon tradition rather than on the clear Word of God. The writer of this paper thought, therefore, that a thesis on “The Christian Attitude Toward Birth Control" might fill a need and serve some purpose. This monograph presents only a bird's eye view, and in no way does the writer consider it …

The Concepts Of Sin And Grace In Hinduism, Theodore A. Michalk Jun 1953

The Concepts Of Sin And Grace In Hinduism, Theodore A. Michalk

Bachelor of Divinity

There are two concepts which are very fundamental in the Christian religion. These are the concepts of sin and grace. In the realm of Hindu thinking these concepts are only vaguely known. The author became aware or this state of affairs to some extent during his first term of mission service in India. This awareness awakened a desire to learn, if possible, what ideas arise in the mind or a Hindu thinker when he hears these terms used by a Christian speaker. The author feels that this investigation will help him to render better service to his Savior and to …

The Race Relations Problem Of Today In The Light Of St Paul's Letter To The Ephesians, Walter Lang Jun 1953

The Race Relations Problem Of Today In The Light Of St Paul's Letter To The Ephesians, Walter Lang

Bachelor of Divinity

The great book of the Bible that fits best into the union movement of the Church is the book of Ephesians. This book deals first of all with the thought of Christian unity

Since the Race Relations problem is primarily one of unity, as will be proved in the second chapter of this thesis, and since we are in the union period of the Church, much can be learned on the Race Relations problem for our day from the book of Ephesians.

Lutheran Principles In Government, Walter M. Lossner Jun 1953

Lutheran Principles In Government, Walter M. Lossner

Bachelor of Divinity

Any theory that overlooks the hand of God in government is untenable. The same is true of any of the acceptable theories, if they are viewed as excluding the consideration of God. A contract between men, for example, can never overlook the aim of God. We must remember, however, that though civil government is ordained by God, it did not come immediately from Him, but came, in one manner or another, through the people.

Pre-Darwinian Interpretations Of The Concepts Of The Origin Of Life, Variation, And Survival Of Characters, Daniel Deblock Jr Jun 1953

Pre-Darwinian Interpretations Of The Concepts Of The Origin Of Life, Variation, And Survival Of Characters, Daniel Deblock Jr

Bachelor of Divinity

The individual developments of the concepts of the origin of life, variation; and survival of characters have given birth to many theories of organic evolution. Moreover, these concepts, as they were extant in the first half of the eighteenth century, greatly influenced Charles Darwin, whose “Origin of Species” greatly popularized and gave new life to evolutionistic speculations. Since Darwin’s day organic evolution has gained in popularity until the term has become a common word to countless numbers of people, and until millions of people believe in a theory of evolution in one form or another. Hence, it is important, that …

The Concept Of Doxa Chiefly In The Gospel Of St. John, Herman Charles Waejten Jun 1953

The Concept Of Doxa Chiefly In The Gospel Of St. John, Herman Charles Waejten

Bachelor of Divinity

This is a feeble attempt to expose some of John's leading thoughts and ideas, so that both the writer of this thesis and the readers might be led into a fuller and richer understanding of the Gospel and its purpose.

The Relation Of The Unio Mystica To The Corpus Doctrinae, Herbert Kretzmann Jun 1953

The Relation Of The Unio Mystica To The Corpus Doctrinae, Herbert Kretzmann

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to consider the relation or the unio mystica to the body of Christian doctrine. We will note first of all how so many well-meaning people have practiced all sorts of mystical exercises which they believed would obtain and strengthen their union with God. Many have believed and taught this doctrine as the basis of man's justification, saying that "faith justifies … as the germ of renewal, or as the means or ingrafting into the new humanity. Others seem to overlook this doctrine altogether, in spite of the fact that the unio mystica has …

A Descriptive Study Of The Methods Of Argumentation Employed By The Writers Of The New Testament, Waldemar Streufert Jun 1953

A Descriptive Study Of The Methods Of Argumentation Employed By The Writers Of The New Testament, Waldemar Streufert

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

At the very outset I wish to state, as a basic assumption, that l hold to the divine origin of the Holy Scripture, pointed to by Paul in 2 Tim. 3:16. My conviction is that on account of this origin the apostolic writings are true and reliable in everything they say. When I discuss the methods of argumentation in the New Testament, that is not meant to throw doubt on the position of the Lutheran Church that these writings come from the eternal and infallible mind or God, and. are the product of divine inspiration.

Leiturgia-An Opus Magnum In The Making, Walter E. Buszin Jun 1953

Leiturgia-An Opus Magnum In The Making, Walter E. Buszin

Concordia Theological Monthly

The liturgical revival which is wending its way through the churches of Christendom today has made its influence felt also within the Lutheran Church. This movement is not chiefly a seeking after forms and ceremonies, nor is it merely a reaction against irreverent and amorphous worship practices. While excesses are to be noted within the movement, it is hardly just and fair to regard these as inevitable and essential earmarks of this liturgical revival, since revivals and movements in areas other than the liturgical likewise suffer because of the intemperate endeavors of a zealotistic minority.

Brief Exegesis Of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 With Guideline For The Application Of The Prophecy Contained Therein, Henry Hamann Jun 1953

Brief Exegesis Of 2 Thess. 2:1-12 With Guideline For The Application Of The Prophecy Contained Therein, Henry Hamann

Concordia Theological Monthly

The two different quotations from two different scholars at the beginning of this article show very clearly, each in its own way, the spirit and the frame of mind with which the problem of Antichrist should be studied. The first is from an article on Antichrist in Hastings' Encyclopedia of Religion and Ethics. [The doctrine that the Pope was the Antichrist] came to be more and more only learned pedantry, and the belief no longer possessed the power of forming history. With this last phase the interest in the legend entirely disappeared, and it [the legend of Antichrist) was now …

The Educational Ideas And Methods Of The Brethren Of The Common Life, Clifford H. Peterson Jun 1953

The Educational Ideas And Methods Of The Brethren Of The Common Life, Clifford H. Peterson

Bachelor of Divinity

The background to the educational work of the Brethren in this study included: the medieval school, the rise of public-controlled education, and the mystical movements in northern Europe during the late medieval period. It is against this background that the philosophy and work of the founder of the Brethren, Gerard Groote and the life and educational work among the Brethren are seen in the perspective of their times. The aims and reforms of two of their outstanding schools, those of John Cele and Alexander Hegius, also compliment this educational picture. As a result, the scope of this study might be …

The Conversion Of St. Paul As Reflected By Paul's Usage Of Charis, Marvin Middendorf Jun 1953

The Conversion Of St. Paul As Reflected By Paul's Usage Of Charis, Marvin Middendorf

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the first word of greeting and the last word of farewell in Paul's letters. For Paul, Charis includes the sum of all blessings that come from God through Christ. Grace is for Paul the beginning and the end; the Alpha and the Omega. Robertson says in his “Word Pictures of the New Testament”, “Perhaps no word carries more meaning for St. Paul's message than this word."
