Baptismal References In First Peter, Gerard Edward Isenberg Jun 1958

Baptismal References In First Peter, Gerard Edward Isenberg

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of this thesis is to determine and interpret the specific and implied baptismal references within First Peter. This purpose also includes a presentation of the viewpoints of scholars who designate First Peter 1:3-4:11 as a baptismal homily.

Johann Sebastian Bach As Interpreter Of Scripture In The Passion Of Our Lord According To St. Matthew, William George Naumann Jun 1958

Johann Sebastian Bach As Interpreter Of Scripture In The Passion Of Our Lord According To St. Matthew, William George Naumann

Bachelor of Divinity

With regard to the study or the St. Matthew Passion, or of any of Bach's works, the basic assumption must be Bach's familiarity with and loyalty to the teachings of the Lutheran Church .

Such a study has limitations. Any study of musical interpretation falls into the dangers of subjectivism. This is easily seen by the wide variance of opinion on perhaps the same musical form.

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath Jun 1958

Mishpat And Zedeq In The Eighth-Century Prophets, James P. Rath

Bachelor of Divinity

We have attempted, in this thesis, to find the sources and authorities most competent to lead us along the way toward understanding what progression of revelation actually did take place in the writings as we have them from the eighth century. That there are other authorities which perhaps should have been consulted should not be denied; but we feel that the presentation as it is here sufficiently proves that these prophets were truly led by God to make a great advance over their predecessors.

The Doctrine Of Christ's Exaltation In Luther's Theology, Gerhard Galchutt Jun 1958

The Doctrine Of Christ's Exaltation In Luther's Theology, Gerhard Galchutt

Bachelor of Divinity

If we, us Lutherans, are within Western Protestantism, it would hardly be possible for us to escape the influence of this milieu. And this writer believes this influence and its effects are readily found also within or own church body. There may be no traces of this influence in our doctrine and theological discussion, but it might become manifest already.in our cultus and then in some of our religious publications and devotional art for popular consumption. If so, this thesis has a very “practical” bent. It tries to set forth Luther's doctrine of the exalted Christ as a corrective for …

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter Jun 1958

The Kingdom Of God In The Old Testament, Robert Edward Wolter

Bachelor of Divinity

The sole purpose of this thesis is to trace the origin of the Kingdom of God from the beginning of time, creation, to the time of Christ. The development of the Kingdom of God will be traced through four specific areas: the Patriarchal, the Mosaic, the Royal, and the Prophetic. Within each of these areas it should be kept in mind that God is using people to spread His Kingdom. The fourth chapter will give a brief summary of the Jewish concept concerning the Kingdom. As for reference to the Covenant Idea, the Son of Man in Daniel, the Suffering …

The Terminology In Philippians Directed To, And Influenced By, Local Conditions, W Gail Rabe Jun 1958

The Terminology In Philippians Directed To, And Influenced By, Local Conditions, W Gail Rabe

Bachelor of Divinity

The reader of the New Testament is ever aware that the Book he is reading has been written under the inspiration of God. He is not merely reading the results or man's wisdom, but he is opening his mind and heart to receive God's revelation of judgment and mercy presented in written words through the agents whom He Himself appointed. This often results in misunderstanding regarding the Biblical view of inspiration. Questions such as these often arise: “If this is God's Word, what part does the human author play?” "Is this inspiration a mechanical rendering whereby the author loses all …

A Study Of The Anacolutha In The Pauline Corpus, Raymond Carl Schulze Jun 1958

A Study Of The Anacolutha In The Pauline Corpus, Raymond Carl Schulze

Bachelor of Divinity

Any writing of great import must subject itself in time to the close scrutiny of the student, even though it may have been intended originally for the interested reader alone. A close look at the Pauline epistles indicates, in many instances at least, grammatical inconsistencies of such a nature that the meaning of the text is obscured to a greater or lesser degree. The anacolutha in the Pauline epistles present such a problem.

The Influence Of The Babylonian Captivity On The Religion Of The Jews, Arthur C. Dueker Jun 1958

The Influence Of The Babylonian Captivity On The Religion Of The Jews, Arthur C. Dueker

Bachelor of Divinity

It is the purpose of this paper to uncover the importance and the influence of this exile upon the religion of the Jews, more especially, to understand the changes which the Babylonian Captivity brought upon the religion of the Jews. For it was during the exile in Babylonia that the Jews changed as a people, as a nation, and, what is most important of all, as a religious society. These changes and developments, which occurred during the exile, have remained until the present day and are of the utmost importance in our understanding of the Jewish people.

Chrysostom's Theology Of The Priesthood, Albert Hahn Gaal Jun 1958

Chrysostom's Theology Of The Priesthood, Albert Hahn Gaal

Bachelor of Divinity

Perhaps he can give only a beginning of an ideal for the construction of a theology of the ministry. The Church may find in Chrysostom a series of insights neglected over the years through carelessness. Then this is the problem which faces the Church--to study Chrysostom's homilies and basic writings, perhaps gathering from then new, important insights that can help to make the work of the ministry more effective in the confusing days which the Church faces in the Atomic Age.

The Problem Of The Oracles To The Nations In Jeremiah, Elmer Reimnitz Jun 1958

The Problem Of The Oracles To The Nations In Jeremiah, Elmer Reimnitz

Bachelor of Divinity

Critics have attacked the authorship of Jeremiah in large scale. Some try to make his writings only half of the actual book. Others try to throw out smaller sections and separate verses. The section of the book of Jeremiah which has received the strongest attacks is the section often referred to as the oracles to the nations. In this thesis we will consider the various problems raised up by the critics.

The Influence Of Thomas Cranmer On Henry Viii And Through Him On The English Reformation, John Edward Golisch

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem this paper seeks to answer is: What influence did Archbishop Cranmer—particularly the personal character of Cranmer—have on King Henry VIII and through him on the English Reformation?

Christian Admonition And Its Practical Implications For The Church, Eugene E. Heckmann Jun 1958

Christian Admonition And Its Practical Implications For The Church, Eugene E. Heckmann

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem to be discussed in this thesis is Christian Admonition and its practical implications for the Church. There is evidence of a renewed emphasis on the practice or Christian admonition among the lay members of the church. This renewed emphasis, therefore, offers valid reason to restudy the Scriptural teaching on admonition and to consider what has been written on this subject in the history of the Church. It appears to the writer that such an emphasis is very necessary in these days when there is a definite need for strong faith among Christian people. Hence, on the basis of …

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer Jun 1958

The Formation Of The United Church Of Canada, Milton H. Riemer

Bachelor of Divinity

After twenty-five years of negotiations between the Methodist, Congregational, and Presbyterian Churches of Canada, the organic union of these three bodies into The United Church of Canada was consummated on June 10, 1925. This thesis shall deal primarily with the twenty-five years preceding the union. Of necessity we shall have to look briefly at the present-day characteristics of The United Church of Canada if we wish to arrive at any conclusions regarding the success or failure of the venture. Furthermore, since this is to be primarily an historical presentation, there are large areas regarding these twenty-five years before union which …

A Comparison Of The Code Of Hammurabi And Mosaic Law, Ernst R. Pflug Jun 1958

A Comparison Of The Code Of Hammurabi And Mosaic Law, Ernst R. Pflug

Bachelor of Divinity

As the title of this thesis indicates, the problem we wish to explore is the apparent similarities between the Code of Hammurabi and the Mosaic Law. We want to explore both bodies of law and take note of the apparent similarities, and then try to account for them. In the search for a better understanding of the similarities, we shall not limit ourselves to the texts of the two codes but we shall also consider the historical background, cultures, and personalities responsible for them.

Some Implications Of A Modern Understanding Of Grief For The Pastoral Care Of The Bereaved, Paul John Bauermeister

Bachelor of Divinity

The purpose of the research done in preparing this paper is to determine what constitutes good pastoral care of the bereaved. The answers to two questions are sought: (1) What are the personality sciences currently saying about grief?; (2) How can the minister make use of these findings in his ministry to the bereaved?

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege Jun 1958

Christian Growth And The Word Of God, Mark Steege

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The relation of the two concepts, Christian growth and the Word of God, will be one of the chief concerns of this study; but almost equal to it in importance will be the proper understanding of a number of the factors involved: (a) God's revelation of His holy will rewarding Christian growth; (b) Man's nature before and after conversion with special reference to his relation to God; (c) The possibility of Christian growth, indicating God's approach to man in His Word; (d) The responsibility for Christian growth as indicated in the Word; (e) The ideal Christian life, as described in …

Are We Preaching A Gospel Free From Law?, Everard Hinrichs Jun 1958

Are We Preaching A Gospel Free From Law?, Everard Hinrichs

Concordia Theological Monthly

Let us state the question which heads this paper more specifically: When we speak of the Gospel (grace, forgiveness of sin, Cross of Christ, Christ Crucified), is it permissible to mix elements of the Law into this concept? One would like to view this question as rhetorical, having for its answer the strongest possible negative. In view of its subject matter, however, one is left with a sense of that kind of interrogative which anticipates a negative answer yet searches deeply for whatever reason may motivate it.

A Review Of Von Weizsäcker's Am Anfang, August C. Rehwaldt Jun 1958

A Review Of Von Weizsäcker's Am Anfang, August C. Rehwaldt

Concordia Theological Monthly

During the winter of 1919/20 Victor von Weizsȁcker delivered a series of lectures on natural philosophy at the University of Heidelberg. Because of conditions of war only a fragment of these lectures has been preserved. This was published under the title: Am Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Erde. The opening sentences of the lecture proper are: "We begin by referring to a particular historical document, the oldest, perhaps, in existence, the creation account of the Bible. We shall see that it contains all the most important problems of natural philosophy." This paper is an attempt to share some of Weizsȁcker’s …

The Responsibility Of The Church To Offer Guidance To Parents With Regard To The Personality Development Of The Child, Edgar P. Senne Jun 1958

The Responsibility Of The Church To Offer Guidance To Parents With Regard To The Personality Development Of The Child, Edgar P. Senne

Master of Divinity Thesis

It is from such evidence and from such thinking that the desire to study the problem arises. Where do parents fail? What kind of help would assist them in doing a better job? Is the problem in any way a concern or a responsibility of the Church? If so, how can this responsibility be carried out? These are some of the questions which the study undertakes to answer.

Bachelor of Divinity

It is from such evidence and from such thinking that the desire to study the problem arises. Where do parents fail? What kind of help would assist them in doing a better job? Paul Tillich's Theory Of Symbol, Norbert Oscar Schedler Jun 1958

Paul Tillich's Theory Of Symbol, Norbert Oscar Schedler

Bachelor of Divinity

We will begin this paper with an introduction into the Weltanschauung out of which the problem of symbolism arises. The importance of studying the trends in the field of symbolism is not to be underestimated. In the development of modern philosophical thought the problem of symbolism has played a decisive role.

Luther's Concept Of The Two Kingdoms And The American Situation, Walter Charles Pieper Jun 1958

Luther's Concept Of The Two Kingdoms And The American Situation, Walter Charles Pieper

Bachelor of Divinity

It is neither the purpose of this paper to prove or disprove any man’s theory of interpretation of application of Luther’s teaching and to see how it has affected modern history, but rather it aims to look at Luther and see what he actually says.

The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier Jun 1958

The Anabaptists And Their Rejection Of Infant Baptism, James T. Heinemeier

Bachelor of Divinity

Rather than being an exhaustive study of perhaps one of the reasons or the Anabaptists' rejection of infant baptism, this thesis presents a somewhat broader look at the background of the movement, and the social, political, and theologica1 attitudes of the Anabaptists, followed by a more thorough investigation of five of the particularly fundamental objections the Anabaptists raised against infant baptisrn. The writer shall attempt to be as objective as possible in presenting the material contained in the body of the thesis. His subjective evaluation and conclusions are contained in the last chapter.

The Paradoxical Content Of The Title Son Of Man, Arno M. Klausmeier Jun 1958

The Paradoxical Content Of The Title Son Of Man, Arno M. Klausmeier

Bachelor of Divinity

The problem with which this thesis will be occupied is the determination of the content of the title "Son of Man" and demonstrating the sources of this content. An investigation of this sort will prove that the content of "Son of Man” is anything but simple; it is paradoxical. Since this title is Jesus' favorite self-designation, writer and reader are justified to expect growth in the "knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.”
