The object of this thesis is to trace the introduction of Calvinism into the official and unofficial formularies of the Church of England during the Reformation period. Calvinism is defined as any distinctive theological teaching advocated by John Calvin, the leader of the Reformed Church during the middle of the sixteenth century. The official formularies were the confessional statements and prescribed forms of worship ordered to be used in the established Church by the English monarch. In his book Communism and Christ, Charles W. Lowry contends that we are living in a new religious age. As evidence he points to the post-World War II popular religious revival, to what he calls "a new priesthood" set up by psychiatry, to the influence of existential thought in philosophy and theology (consider Paul Tillich), and to the "collective neurosis" brought on by the crisis and anxieties of our hydrogen-missile age. "The final and conclusive proof that we have entered into a new religious era Lowry perceived in the expansion and menace of the "new universal salvation religion - Communism."

Certainly association and identification with Pietists and Pietism should not disqualify him for a niche in the hall of remembered saints. Though some still speak with caution and even opprobriously about Pietists and Pietism, the climate has changed especially with reference to the earlier Pietists. Much of the suspicion, detraction, and obloquy which became attached to the name and fame of Pietism stems from falsely attributing many excrescences and aberrations of later Pietism to the early founders of the movement.

We would think about this fact obviously not just to say "How peculiar!" or "How interesting!" but in order that this fighting spirit, this friendly spirit, might become ingrained and fused in the heart and in the career of every one of us.

The written discussion which has centered around Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:9; Mark 10: 11, 12; Luke 16: 18; and 1 Corinthians 7:12-16 is certainly voluminous, sometimes biased, mostly tentative. It is our conviction that much of the labor expended through the years in an effort to develop a modus operandi for dealing with divorce and remarriage has resulted in more ambiguous conclusions than certain ones. It is also our conviction that these passages need to be studied anew by our Lutheran Church. In no area of pastoral care is there more need for clear doctrine and practice.

So far as I know, this is the first extended attempt at writing a biography of this pioneer Minnesota missionary. There are several very short biographies extant, but I found no extended works available. My grandfather often mentioned that his father was humble and did not look for publicity. This is quite evident from the paucity of material available on this man.
