Out With The Old, In With The Young? Youth And Old Age In Vergil’S Eclogues And Georgics, Charissa Skoutelas, Anthony Smith

Scholars have noted that Silenus’ entrapment by Chromis and Mnasyllos (Eclogues 6) and Aristaeus’ ambush of Proteus (Georgics 4) share distinct elements. Both passages portray youths forcefully binding an old figure with chains to compel a song. In comparing old Silenus and Proteus with the “boys” Chromis and Mnasyllos and “most daring of the youth” Aristaeus respectively, this paper traces such physical compulsion alongside the metaphorical confinement of Tityrus (Eclogues 1) and the Corycian senex (Georgics 4) to argue that Vergil mobilizes the clash of youth and senectitude to comment on the effects of literary tradition …

Book VI of the Mathematical Collection is a collection of comments or notes about various points treated in parts of a collection of other texts sometimes known as the “Little Astronomy.” Pappus uses these works as sources and frequently quotes from them in this book. In the teaching of mathematical astronomy in late antiquity, and this would include the time of Pappus, the “Little Astronomy” is often understood to have been a follow-up to Euclid’s Elements and a preliminary to the study of the Almagest of Claudius Ptolemy (ca. 100–165 CE). This article offers an interdisciplinary study of the French Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain during World War II in order to provide an historical resource for understanding the global dimensions and possibilities at work in modern Catholicism. In 1941, while living in New York City, Maritain helped to cofound and lead the École Libre des Hautes Études (the “Free French University”). An initiative primarily created by American and French intellectuals, the university became an important hub for rescuing and employing nearly two hundred individuals from across the world. The Ministries Of New Communities In The Ivory Coast Scrutinised Under The Lens Of The Theological And Magisterial Vision Of The Church, Joseph Loïc Mben Sj

The goal of this article is to show that the ministries of new communities are in conformity with the theological and magisterial vision of the Church and that, in many cases, they contribute to its enrichment. Following some lexical clarifications, it makes particular use of the schema of the threefold offices of Christ in which the members of new communities partake as the baptized, to show how the ministries realize each of the dimensions of Christ’s office.

The Hospital de San Lázaro was a specialized health facility in the early modern Philippines, dedicated to the care of lepers and sufferers of other contagious diseases. While it was established for this specific purpose, its role in colonial society varied. This versatility reflected the distinct priorities and commitments of the groups pulled into its orbit, as each charged San Lázaro with a unique meaning. This article explores how and why these groups—the indigenous Filipinos, the Spanish residents and the Discalced Franciscans—understood San Lázaro in their own way. Reception Of The Testimonium Flavianum: An Evaluation Of The Independent Witnesses To Josephus’ Testimonium Flavianum, Chrissy M.E. Hansen

New England Classical Journal

The Testimonium Flavianum’s authenticity has been a prominent concern in Jesus studies for centuries. Recent studies have largely ruled it partially authentic, with the works of Whealey, Paget, and Allen arguing that independent witnesses to the Testimonium Flavianum existed beyond Eusebius. This essay assesses the independency of these alleged witnesses to the Testimonium Flavianum and concludes that none hold water. Per this paper’s findings, all versions of the Testimonium Flavianum have their origin in either Eusebius’ Historia Ecclesiastica or Demonstratio Evangelica.

Amy Barbour (PhD Yale, 1902) was one of the first women to receive a PhD in Classics in the United States. This essay describes how Barbour’s social context, gender, and national identity inflected her engagement with transatlantic intellectual trends. A biographical sketch culminating with Barbour’s career at Smith College as Professor of Ancient Greek is followed by a description of her academic achievements in the light of contemporary disciplinary anxiety and the use of biography as a scholarly tool. Echoes Of The Past: The Vitellian Women In Tacitus’ Histories, Caitlin Gillespie

New England Classical Journal

This article argues that Tacitus’ characterizations of female members of the Vitellii evoke literary representations of several prominent Roman women of the late Republic and Julio-Claudian era. Tacitus draws upon a range of figures for his Vitellian women, from Fulvia to Livia, Antonia the Younger to Octavia. Literary resonances contribute to Tacitus’ representation of Vitellius as a bad emperor who nevertheless cared about his family. In rejecting or reflecting literary models, Tacitus uses Vitellius’ mother Sextilia, wife Galeria, and sister-in-law Triaria to create echoes and distinctions between past and present civil conflicts.
