This study has been motivated by an intimate contact with the Indiana State School for the Deaf as a teacher and by a growing interest in its development. This interest was further stimulated by coming into contact with the large volume of school records which, in some cases, date back to the beginning of the school in 1843. In spite of the fact that these original source materials have been fairly well preserved, no history of the school, other than comparatively brief sketches, has been written.

It is hoped that the facts revealed in this survey will aid in the passage of a law in Indiana concerning Music Education, similar to the law in effect in Indiana dealing with Vocational Education. It is further hoped that these facts will show a need for better programs of music education. Views of the oecumenical movement range from an enthusiastic, if often shallow optimism, to a cautious, and sometimes bitter, suspicion. The thesis which I venture to offer is that only a radical emproach to oecumenicity can enable us to understand what is happening in this moment of Church history.
