The name of Tomas Wharton Phillips, (1835-1912), occurs quite frequently in the history of the Disciples of Christ. Probably his family name is best known by its association with Phillips University, Enid, Oklahoma. There has also been a renewed interest in him through the recent completion of the "T.W. Phillips Memorial Library" in Nashville, Tennessee, now the headquarters of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society.

Zachary Taylor Sweeney was one of the more popular and influential preachers of the Christian Church during the last quarter of the nineteenth century and first quarter of the twentieth century. He built the largest congregation of his brotherhood during his lifetime. He was one of the leading spokesmen of the conservative element of the Disciples during a very troubled period. Outside of church affairs he became prominent in political, governmental, chautauqua, and business circles.

Until recently, very little had been written directly on the problem of the New Testament kergyma. Works designed solely for the purpose of setting forth the nature of the message of the primitive preaching of the church, and the forms of the preaching of the primitive message of the church, were woefully lacking. However, in recent years there has been a return to a discussion of this problem. This thesis seeks to provide a survey of some of the literature of this recent investigation of the kergyma of the New Testament.

In studying the background and origin of meaning for this word [ecclesia], this paper will seek to investigate the pagan, the Jewish, and the Christian literature in this order. A basic premise of this paper is Hemingway's definition of bullfighting as a tragic art form. Several years ago the writer became interested in a study of the New Testament concept of the church. Since the major part of the New Testament collection dealing with this concept is made up of the writings of the apostle Paul he felt that the study should begin with these writings. In making a preliminary study it was found that the apostle's concept would be too extensive and too inclusive to incorporate in its entirety within the scope of a thesis written as partial requirement for the Master of Arts Degree. Therefore, our procedure will be to examine the various Pauline writings to determine Paul's advocacy of grace and the implications of this in three areas. We will introduce our study with an examination of the background for the problem of Jewish legalism in the early church. This will include a brief appraisal of the constituency of the early church, expansion to the Gentiles, Paul's missionary labors and resultant opposition from the Judaistic party, and a brief preliminary view of Paul's effort to deal with this problem.

The Prophetic Concept Of [Tsedaqah], Loren E. Arnett

The concept of [hebrew characters] (tsedeqah) is a cardinal feature of the prophetic teaching. A study of the prophetic literature in the Old Testament reveals that the Hebrew word [hebrew characters- tsedeqah] and cognates appear about one hundred and sixty times. This frequent usage emphasizes the significant place the concept of [hebrew characters- tsedeqah] had in the thinking and preaching of the prophets. The impact of the prophets delcarations is greatly dimished for many readers, however, by the wide range of diversity in the Greek and English translations of [hebrew characters- tsedeqah] and its cognate words.
