A lively, varied range of scholarly activities is gathered today under the title of "Hindu-Christian studies." Indeed, we find as many different approaches and interests surfacing in this field as can be found in other areas of theology and the study of religion. The wealth of material that deals with the study of the religions grouped loosely under the titles of "Hinduism" and "Christianity" is itself enormous and still growing. One of the creative tensions in Hinduism is the concept of God as Impersonal Absolute vs. the concept of God as Personal. In the Bhagavad-Gita (written c. 400-200 B.C.), the concept of God as personal, loving and compassionate is emphasized. It is not surprising, therefore, that many scholars and spiritual writers have found in the Bhagavad-Gita a rich source of comparison with Christian spirituality.

I take as a starting point the last sentence of the Editorial in Vol. I of the new Bulletin: "With a few notable exceptions...contemporary Hindu thinkers do not seem to be engaged with Christianity in the way their predecessors were at the turn of the century (e.g. Roy, Sen, Dayananda and Radhakrishnan)". Its aim is not to accomplish a merger, as of two political parties or groups, nor to arrive at the lowest measure of agreement in religious beliefs.
