In the current Cátedra edition of Fortunata y Jacinta Francisco Caudet provides a valuable service for Galdosian scholars by supplementing the text -- based on the "La Guirnalda" first edition of 1887 -- with footnotes which quote material that was either discarded or changed at the galley stage. Although Caudet acknowledges his inability to record the thousands of galley revisions that Galdós made, he does propose to cite the more important ones. Surprisingly, however, he does not include one of the few scenes from the galleys which was deleted in its entirety. It occurs in Part IV, Chapter 2, Section …

Review Of Kenneth Baynes, The Normative Grounds Of Social Criticism: Kant, Rawls, And Habermas (1992), Harry Van Der Linden

Baynes's two main objectives are to show that Kant, Rawls, and Habermas share the view that "the idea of an agreement among free and equal persons [i. e., autonomous persons] ... constitutes the normative ground of social criticism" (p. 8), and that this "constructivist" view is more adequately developed and defended with each successive theorist. The study, however, goes beyond these aims and can often fruitfully be read as a comparative study of Rawls and Habermas.

On "Hindutva" And A "Hindu-Catholic," With A Moral For Our Times, Julius Lipner

The purpose of this article is to comment on the term hindutva, viz. "Hinduness," with special reference to a 19th century Bengali thinker who sought to indigenise his Christian faith, and to draw some topical conclusions. The thinker is Brahmabandhab Upadhyay (1861-1907) whom his sometime friend, Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal's greatest luminary, described as "a Roman Catholic ascetic, yet a Vedantin -- spirited, fearless, self-denying, erudite and uncommonly influential." No doubt Upadhyay was influential then; he had a powerful impact on Tagore himself especially when they were jointly establishing what would later develop as Tagore's brainchild of Santiniketan. The history of Christian Thought in the West is not notable for its efforts to come to grips with the claims of other religious traditions, except for the purpose of proselyizatioin, i.e. the concern to save souls. The attitude taken by Christian Churches toward other religions has often been labelled as exclusivism. In its extreme form its attitude has found expression in the assertion that among all peoples of the world, Christians alone have a corner on the truth.

Discussions on saints normally focus on the nature and meaning of sainthood. While apostels, church fathers, martyrs and people of outstanding dedication are considered as saints in Christian tradition, the Vedic sages and gurus are taken as counterparts in the Hindu religious tradition. But mostly significance is attached to their individual worth, charisma and exemplary life. However, the communion of saints is a significant phenomenon in the New Testament and its resemblance seems to lie more in the wandering saints of the regional bhakti traditions of Hinduism (C-500-700 CE) than in the Vedic sages and gurus. I want to begin my "response" -- which is in actuality more of the nature of participating in a conversation -- to Professor Dabholkar's observations by saying how much I appreciate his setting the tone of our interchange by stressing the centrality of the "inner dialogue" in Gandhiji's life. Certainly this is an essential element for an adequate understanding the incredible mahatma, or "great soul." Viewpoints: Hindu-Christian Dialogue In Austria/Vienna As A Typical Example For Interreligious Dialogue, Birgit Langer

According to the Indian Embassy at present 4800 people from India live in Austria. Among them are approximately 1000 Hindus. Most of the Hindus live in Vienna. Hinduism does not belong to the religious communities -- like Islam or Buddhism -- which are acknowledged by the Austrian State. Therefore Hindu children, who visit Austrian schools, are registered with the notice "no religion." In Austria Hindus represent a very small minority. Nevertheless several institutions and organisations are occupied with Hindu-Christian dialogue in quite different ways.

The section on The Communion of Saints in the Tamil Saiva Tradition deals with most of the prominent features. I feel that reference to "the penetration of Brahmanic values such as the Agamic ritual tradition and individual liberation" as contributory factors to the decline of the saints' movement" and reference to Brahmanic Hinduism developing a social stratification on the basis of caste" could have been avoided. It is good to remember that great value is attached to 'Satsang' in the Sanskrit tradition. This recognition will in no way diminish the value in the Tamil tradition.

I can only outline the main approach to this theme in the brief space available. I am aware that it would require a much more detailed and documented statement. I am also doing this exercise mostly under quotation marks to ensure authenticity. Even quotations, however, can be slippery and deceptive if torn out of their context and chronology. I can only hope that this summary statement will bear out closer scrutiny.
