In this paper we reflect on the role of scripture in salvation in Hinduism and Christianity. We all know that differences among various Hindu scripturologies are severe and profound. Diversities of understandings of the nature and role of scripture in salvation abound no less within the various Christian traditions. There is no Hindu consensus regarding the scripture's role in salvation. Even within orthodox Hinduism the differences on this theme are fundamental. For instance. the Vedanta of Sankara reads the Vedas as descriptive of Brahman, the knowledge and realization of which constitutes moksa which Sankara equates with meta-material, meta-social, pure being. …

One of Wilfred Cantwell Smith's principal concerns in What is Scripture? is to highlight the variety of texts which are construed as scripture and the variety of attitudes which human history reveals towards such texts. We may begin by noting, for example, the inappropriateness of the term "scripture" (from scribere - to write) for the Vedas because of its emphasis on the written word as opposed to the word which is heard and preserved through oral transmission. There are times I think the term Hindu-Christian "studies" or even Hindu-Christian "dialogue" is a misnomer and a fantasy. This is so for several reasons. For one thing, there is a long history in which such "study" or conversation has been a monologue, a one-way street or an interpretation by imposition. There has been too much shouting at each other from caves and not enough honesty, negotiation, and mutual respect of personhood on the boundaries between where peoples live. For another, such engagements are not and never again can be merely one on one discourses between persons with single identities. …

What Christians call the Bible is a cultural, ideological, ritual, and spiritual depository of a people who live din West Asia. Although Christians perceive it as the Book (in spite of the implied plural meaning in Greek), it is a composition of several books, embodying the collective and individual divine-human encounters of two communities - Jews and the early converts to the Jesus movement in the Mediterranean region. The Bible has two testaments, to which the adjectives "Old" and "New" are prefixed. Scripture and salvation -- from a Christian point of view, both are gifts from God. yet they are not of equal import. For Christianity salvation is fundamental: it is the goal of life, indeed it is life eternal. Scripture, on the other hand, is instrumental: it leads one to salvation. As the Christian scriptures themselves put it: "... the sacred writings ... are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Tim 3:15b).

This paper is designed to serve as a general introduction to the topic and is not meant to be a definitive resource. The ideas presented here deal with general characteristics which serve as a basis for comparison of the three fiddle styles. A more in-depth study which examines stylistic traits peculiar to small geographic regions within Scotland, Ireland, and Appalachia is needed to give a more complete picture of the Celtic influence on the fiddle traditions of the Southern mountains.
