“We’ve been waiting for you for hours, Cynthia.” All the lights are off in the dusky house. White, hazy sun filters in through the blinds. Cynthia tilts her head to the side and carefully pulls her right hand behind her back as the front door swings shut. She fumbles for the light switch with her other hand, but nothing happens. They’ve cut the electricity. Cynthia frowns, wrinkles her lips.

Monday. Sunny. Low of 68. High of 94. Nineteen percent chance of rain.

The scent of dirt follows me into the house. People say “dirty” like it’s a bad thing, but I like dirt. It clings to me, to the knees of my jeans, to the undersides of my nails, to all the tiny lines and crevices in my skin.

The sun was sinking fast in the western sky when Luke and Sari climbed the hill—their hill—to watch the day fade away. Things had been difficult on us lately, Luke thought, with the stresses of the day-to-day minutia and the toll that life takes on love. And yet, here they were, hand in hand, just as they ought to be.

My father is quiet. He isn’t the same kind of quiet as a rock but the same kind of quiet as a book. He is particular with his words, as if they were stepping stones. He relies on his few strong words to support him and convey his thoughts. He never speaks unless it is more beautiful than silence. He seems to have his longest silent conversations with the sea.

While I love the English language, I have found that creative orthography is the only way I can express mysel£ Don't get me wrong, variety is pleasing, but I rarely do it on purpose. In my defense, there are some uncommon words that are notoriously difficult to spell-cymotrichous (relating to having wavy hair) and smaragdine (relating to emeralds or their color) would fall into this category. Even Microsoft Word flags those words as incorrect, and any Spelling Bee contestant would start to sweat if a judge picked them. But then there are common words that always make me think twice, …

This speech has mrhmited precisely two hundred and fifty-seven outcomes. No matter how much I refresh my results, the possibilities remain the same. I cannot accurately predict what will happen, although my gears are endlessly turning, trying to find the outcome I want.

Niklaus Leuenberger: Predating Gandhi In 1653?, Hans Leuenberger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The 1653 Peasant War can be subdivided in the following phases:

The beginning of the rebellion in the Entlebuch Valley, Canton

Lucerne. The massive popular revolt under the leadership of Niklaus

Leuenberger, chairman of the “League of Huttwil,” as of the

signing of the Oath of Huttwil [Bundesbrief] with the aim

of a renewal of the Oath of Rütli of 1291 [author’s remark],

through to the conclusion of the Murifeld Peace Treaty.

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken Jan 2020

A History Of The Swiss In California, Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In 1848, the same year that Switzerland’s political structure

took on its present constitutional form as a modern nation-state, a Swiss

settler-entrepreneur named John Sutter became aware of gold deposits

at his mill in Alta California. This led directly to the California Gold

Rush. Two years later, in 1850, the United States accepted the freshly

acquired and promising region now known as “California” into the

Union as a state. Swiss immigrants enhanced the development of California

from its very inception.

Kpom! Kpom! Kpom!: The familiar majestic sound that my mother’s grand wooden mortar and pestle communicate to each other. They recognize their status as the most important utensils in her Nigerian kitchen and chatter away oblivious to the red splatter of scotch bonnet peppers between them. I hold the pestle timidly, but tightly in my hands. My ten-year-old biceps cannot understand the synchrony between the pestle and the mortar. The gliding yet forceful motion only evokes a sense of inferiority in me. Together, they have a mind of their own and work so majestically. I am but a spectator. My …

The Saint And The Swan: Animal Interactions In The Hagiography Of Hugh Of Avalon, Emma Grover Jan 2020

The Saint And The Swan: Animal Interactions In The Hagiography Of Hugh Of Avalon, Emma Grover

Quidditas

Animals in medieval hagiography typically appear in conjunction with saints who practice withdrawal from normal human society or are otherwise socially marginalized, such as hermits, outcasts, or mendicant friars. The association of these figures with animals emphasizes the saints’ status on the social margins; for these saints, interaction with animals is a substitute for participation in human society. An exception to this pattern is Hugh of Avalon, bishop of Lincoln in the late twelfth century. An animal companion, the swan of Stow, appears prominently in all three hagiographical accounts of Hugh’s life and is the most recognizable characteristic of his …

I'm not a bad person, your honor. You know that, right? You know me. I've only lived here my whole life, and everyone has seen me. Channel thirty-eight, eleven at night or so. "For dents and pings, Carlisle's the thing!" I did that. I'm the perky blonde, in the tank top and Daisy Dukes, dancing while working a .. . buffer? A brush of some sort? I don't remember. It was twelve years ago, I guess. God, that commercial's been on forever. I think I'd just had Luke at that point. Or was that before?

Militant Switzerland Vs. Switzerland, Island Of Peace, Alex Winiger Jan 2020

Militant Switzerland Vs. Switzerland, Island Of Peace, Alex Winiger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Two monumental murals depict Switzerland during the

First World War: the votive painting in the Lower Ranft Chapel in

Flüeli-Ranft by Robert Durrer (1867-1934), Albert Hinter (1876-

1957) and Hans von Matt (1899-1985) from 1920-21, and the cycle

of Charles L’Eplattenier (1874-1946) in the Knights’ Hall of the Colombier

Castle from 1915-19, depicting the mobilization of Swiss

soldiers in 1914. They report in rich details how differently artists in

that country saw the war of 1914-18. Both were put into architectural

monuments built around 1500.

Cube, Gate, And Measuring Tools: A Biblical Pattern, Matthew B. Brown Jan 2020

Cube, Gate, And Measuring Tools: A Biblical Pattern, Matthew B. Brown

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This article explores the biblical pattern that relates the templerelated symbols of the cube, the gate, and measuring tools. The tools of architecture and measurement were associated with the kingship motifs of creation and conquering chaos, and on the day when a person was initiated as a king in ancient Israel, all of these concepts were applied to him.

Baptized For The Dead, Kevin L. Barney Jan 2020

Baptized For The Dead, Kevin L. Barney

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This thorough treatment of the mention of baptism for the dead in 1 Corinthians 15:29 gives a meticulous analysis of Paul’s Greek argument, and lays out the dozens (or perhaps hundreds) of theories that have been put forth with respect to its interpretation. Barney concludes that “the most natural reading” and the “majority contemporary scholarly reading” is that of “vicarious baptism.” Therefore, “the Prophet Joseph Smith’s reading of the passage to refer to such a practice was indeed correct.”

Janus Parallelism: Speculation On A Possible Poetic Wordplay In The Book Of Mormon, Paul Hoskisson Jan 2020

Janus Parallelism: Speculation On A Possible Poetic Wordplay In The Book Of Mormon, Paul Hoskisson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this article, Paul Hoskisson discusses the question of whether Janus parallelism, a sophisticated literary form found in the Hebrew Bible and elsewhere in manuscripts of the ancient Near East, might also be detected in the Book of Mormon. Because the Book of Mormon exists only in translation, answering this question is not a simple matter. Hoskisson makes the case that 1 Nephi 18:16 may provide the first plausible example of Janus parallelism in the Book of Mormon.

The Great Isaiah Scroll (1qisaa)— Catalogue Of Textual Variants, Donald W. Parry Jan 2020

The Great Isaiah Scroll (1qisaa)— Catalogue Of Textual Variants, Donald W. Parry

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In this erudite survey of textual variants in the “Great Isaiah Scroll” from Qumran, Donald W. Parry lays out the major categories of these differences with illustrative examples. This significant description of the most significant book of Old Testament prophecy provides ample evidence of Parry’s conclusion that the “Great Isaiah Scroll” “sets forth such a wide diversity and assortment of textual variants that [it] is indeed a catalogue, as it were, for textual criticism.”

Medieval Christian Views Of Hebrew As The Language Of Magic, Andrew C. Skinner Jan 2020

Medieval Christian Views Of Hebrew As The Language Of Magic, Andrew C. Skinner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The view of Hebrew as a language of magic, for which precedents can be discerned in the Bible and in rabbinic tradition, spilled over into early and medieval Christianity. Andrew Skinner adroitly explores the material and theological history of this trajectory, showing how this contributed to the emergence of Christian Kabbalah in the sixteenth century.

Multiplicity: An Editors’ Introduction, Quincy D. Newell, Benjamin E. Park

Mormon Studies Review

When J. Spencer Fluhman introduced the new Mormon Studies Review six years ago, he articulated a “guiding principle for the Review: friendship.” As Fluhman put it, “In our hope to meaningfully connect minds across space, time, and ideological and religious spectra, the Review aspires to a very Mormon ideal indeed.”1 We’d like to believe that over the last six years, the Mormon Studies Review has lived up to this aspiration, and that it has demonstrated that friendship is an excellent way to cultivate the field of critical inquiry we call Mormon studies, regardless of participants’ religious identities or institutional commitments.

Placing Peer Response At The Center Of The Response Construct, Dan Melzer Jan 2020

Placing Peer Response At The Center Of The Response Construct, Dan Melzer

Journal of Response to Writing

This article reports on a large-scale study of peer and instructor response and student reflection on response. The corpus of instructor and peer response to 864 drafts of student writing was collected via ePortfolios from first-year writing courses and courses across disciplines at 70 U.S. institutions of higher education. The following questions guided a qualitative analysis of the data: (a) What are the similarities and differences in the ways instructors and peers respond to college writing? (b) What perspectives do college students have on the feedback they receive on their writing from instructors and peers? Three themes emerged from a …
