Tendu To Tango Across The Lifespan: An Argument For Prioritizing Fixed Ballet Instruction As A Contemplative Practice For The Adolescent Mind And Social Dance Instruction For Healthy Aging In The Elderly Population, Jenica Barker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Why dance? This thesis investigates and provides arguments for prioritizing different dance training methods and styles across a person’s lifespan for maximum neurological and mental benefit. Beyond the interpersonal, motivational, and creative skills it delivers, dance training provides significant neural benefits for the developing adolescent brain (ages 10-24). Additionally, there are significant implications for dance’s aid in the prevention or delay of symptoms of healthy aging, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease.

According to the synthesis of research provided in this thesis, fixed ballet training is an optimal form of ballet training for adolescents because of its features consistent with …

Lexical Aspect In-Sha Verb Chains In Pastaza Kichwa, Azya Dawn Ladd Jun 2021

Lexical Aspect In-Sha Verb Chains In Pastaza Kichwa, Azya Dawn Ladd

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a corpus and narrative-based description of how the lexical aspect of predicates with the switch reference same subject (SS) suffix -ʃa affects the meaning of utterances in Pastaza Kichwa (PK), a Quechuan dialect spoken in Amazonian Ecuador. The main purpose of this thesis is to describe how verb chains that use -ʃa are affected by lexical aspect. The secondary purpose is to compare these uses with current grammars, and determine whether there are more uses than are currently proposed in the most recent grammar of PK. The most recent grammar of PK lists the functions of the …

"An Endeavour At Something Spiritual": Queer Spirituality In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Hannah Murdock Jun 2021

"An Endeavour At Something Spiritual": Queer Spirituality In Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Hannah Murdock

Theses and Dissertations

On November 7, 1928, Virginia Woolf wrote in her diary that her 1931 novel, The Waves, would be an "abstract mystical eyeless book" (Diaries 3; 203). In her personal writings, she also referred to the novel as "an endeavour at something mystic, spiritual; the thing that exists when we aren't there" (114). From the initial inspiration for the novel to her own notes, Woolf envisioned The Waves to be "spiritual" above all else. This project examines Woolf's engagement with spirituality throughout The Waves, particularly in the moments in the novel in which the queer characters--Rhoda and Neville--express sexual desire. In …

More Than Stories: Indigenous Environmental Reciprocity In The Poetry Of Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Rebecca Purse Jun 2021

More Than Stories: Indigenous Environmental Reciprocity In The Poetry Of Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner, Rebecca Purse

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis brings to the forefront the traditional stories Marshallese poet, performer, and climate change activist Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner shares in her published poetry. Indigenous studies scholars agree that Indigenous stories have power--power to change, power to inform, and power to heal. The traditional stories in Jetñil-Kijiner's poetry reveal the power of the environment and the potential relationships that can exist between humans and natural beings. While these traditional stories work to disrupt the narrative that Indigenous perspectives, knowledges, and cultures are somehow inferior to their colonial neighbors', they also assert the need for a return to environmental reciprocit--or the establishment …

Switzerland In The Life And Works Of . . . John Le Carré (1931-2020), Matthias Lerf, Richard Hacken, Translator, Annotator

Swiss American Historical Society Review

John le Carré lived at the southwestern tip of England in Cornwall while his masterful spy novels take place all around the world. Yet he always emphasized that Switzerland was his second home, and he spoke excellent German. During an interview in Bern’s Hotel Bellevue in 2010, on which this article is based, he even sprinkled in a few dialect phrases. He said he speaks “es bitzeli” [a bit of] Bernese German, but in general he avoided it, since it would call forth a torrent of words in response that he could not handle. In other matters as …

Book Review: Seidler-Hux, Monica, Gottfried Kellers Feuriger Freund: Johann Ulrich Müller––Romanfigur, Baumeister Und Kartograf Der Usa [Gottfried Keller’S Fiery Friend: Johann Ulrich Müller–– Character In A Novel, Architect, Builder And Cartographer Of The Usa], Richard Hacken

Swiss American Historical Society Review

It is safe to say that an investigation into the life of Johann Ulrich Müller would scarcely warrant the rapt scholarly attention that it does were it not for the presumptive impact of that individual on Gottfried Keller––who was and is perhaps the prime Swiss exponent of literary realism in the eyes of the world. It has been established that Keller’s novel, Der grüne Heinrich [Green Henry], closely parallels the novelist’s own life story, episodically shifting into near-direct autobiography. One memorable character in the novel is closely based on Keller’s friendship with Müller, which had originally begun when the …

Beyond Muesli And Fondue -- The Swiss Contribution To Culinary History: A Summary Of Ambassador Martin Dahinden’S Book, C. Naseer Ahmad

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Breaking bread together has deep rooted spiritual foundations for strengthening fellowship and in easing tensions among people of different persuasions. So, it is propitious that former Swiss Ambassador to United States Dr. Martin Dahinden, who is a seasoned Swiss diplomat with exquisite tastes and a vast reservoir of knowledge and experience wrote a book Beyond Muesli and Fondue, which describes Swiss contributions to culinary history.

From Redemptive Suffering To Redemptive Reconciliation In The Authorship Of Johanna Spyri, Frederick Hale Jun 2021

From Redemptive Suffering To Redemptive Reconciliation In The Authorship Of Johanna Spyri, Frederick Hale

Swiss American Historical Society Review

That Johanna Spyri (1827-1901), best known for her Heidi books, gained renown as one of Switzerland’s most popular and widely translated authors is beyond dispute. The two companion volumes Heidi’s Lehr- und Wanderjahre and Heidi kann brauchen, was es gelernt hat were published in Germany in 1880 and 1881, respectively, and have been reprinted and published in more abridgements, translations, and cultural adaptations than nearly all other works of their era. Several of Spyri’s many other books also enjoyed popularity and were read not only in German, but also in various other languages on both sides of the Atlantic.

"Out Of The Living Rock": The Assemblage Of Ruins In H. Rider Haggard's She, Rachel E. Rackham Jun 2021

"Out Of The Living Rock": The Assemblage Of Ruins In H. Rider Haggard's She, Rachel E. Rackham

Theses and Dissertations

H. Rider Haggard's imperial gothic novel, She, A History of Adventure (1887), is a narrative of ruins that speak of a vanished past and presage ends: of empire, of history, of culture. Haggard's novel follows two British adventurers as they travel to Africa in search of a mysterious woman that a potsherd--a ruin in miniature--tasks them with killing. There, they encounter ruin after ruin: pots, roads, caves, canals, sculptures, and more. These ruins serve as sentinels, as walkways, and as homes; they signal, warn, resist, witness, remind, and--not least--exist in a landscape that is anything but empty. Though seemingly inert, …

Of Zoos And Tools: Conceptual Metaphor Theory In The Language Of Incarcerated People And Correctional Officers, Chloe Rampton

Theses and Dissertations

Prison language is heavily influenced by its environment and is noteworthy for its use of metaphor and metonymy. This study examined the use of metaphor and metonymy, including metaphtonymy, in prison language and how they are influenced by aspects of the environment. The metaphoric and metonymic expressions were selected from the language of incarcerated people and of correctional officers (COs). Data for this study was collected from the podcast Ear Hustle that is produced from inside San Quentin State Prison in California, USA and has been qualitatively analyzed using grounded theory. Additionally, Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) was used to identify …

To Touch The Heavens: A Short Story, Sarah Hedrick Jun 2021

To Touch The Heavens: A Short Story, Sarah Hedrick

Swiss American Historical Society Review

A light Swiss breeze blew through Heidi’s curly blonde hair as she and her grandfather Adolph walked along the mountain path. They had been walking up the mountainside for several hours and were nearing the top. Heidi couldn’t wait to get to the mountaintop; it was the one part of the mountain that she had never been to before. Her grandfather told her that when you were at the top, you’re up so high that you can almost reach up and touch the heavens. However, the trek was quite long, and Heidi had never gone that far up the mountain …

Empathy And Fairness In Nonhuman Primates: Evolutionary Bases Of Human Morality, Colt Halter May 2021

Empathy And Fairness In Nonhuman Primates: Evolutionary Bases Of Human Morality, Colt Halter

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Darwin offered an evolutionary perspective on the origins of human morality, suggesting that humans share a biological foundation with nonhuman primates. This paper reviews the current literature on moral and prosocial behaviors of nonhuman primates, specifically examining whether nonhuman primates exhibit behaviors that are typical of empathy and fairness. The literature documents that nonhuman primates exhibit empathetic behaviors regarding emotional contagion and sympathetic concern. There is also evidence that nonhuman primates have a sense of fairness, seen in their reciprocal behaviors and aversion to inequity. Taken together, this suggests that there are evolutionary roots of morality, lending empirical support to …

A Longtime Member Recalls The Roots Of Her Fascination With Jussi, Vicki Wallshein, Dan Shea

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

The Directors of our Jussi Björling Society-USA had their annual meeting in Washington DC last November, and the delightful Vicki Wallshein attended several sessions with her mother, Dixie. One of the main social events was Sunday brunch at the DC Army and Navy Club, hosted by Carol Pozefsky, where we had good opportunities to swap notes with others about how Jussi Björling had entered our lives! Vicki had this especially charming story:

What Becomes Of My Jussi Stuff?, Walter B. Rudolph, Contributing Editor Apr 2021

What Becomes Of My Jussi Stuff?, Walter B. Rudolph, Contributing Editor

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Regrettably, there is no Jussicology or scholarship in what I’m offering. But it is timely. We, as the Jussi Björling Society-USA, are occasionally approached by people with Björling recordings, seeking an afterlife, or an off-load, of their collections. Major repositories are systematically turning away such collections. And now, on a larger scale, we have joined the struggle to preserve the invaluable resource of the Swedish Record Archive.

Save The Swedish Record Archive!

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

“I am forwarding and strongly recommending an appeal against the actual destruction of the Swedish Radio Record Library, where I once worked. The collections there were of great importance for my work on the Jussi Björling Phonography. The text is also in English, and I hope that international support for the action against the wasting of a Swedish cultural treasure might be of some importance.” —Harald Henrysson

The First Second Caruso, James A. Drake Apr 2021

The First Second Caruso, James A. Drake

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

I don’t want to be another Caruso; I just want to be Gigli,” said the tenor who inherited many of Caruso’s lyric roles after his sudden death in 1921. Over the years, other tenors have expressed similar reservations, sincere or otherwise, about the “second Caruso” label which Beniamino Gigli addressed in his memoirs. Yet there actually was a “second Caruso”: the legendary tenor’s son and namesake, Enrico Caruso, Jr., whom I was privileged to meet at a social event in Tampa, Florida.

Revisiting Jussi’S Last New York Recital, Janel E. Lundgren, Dan Shea

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

From Jussi by Anna-Lisa Björling, Andrew Farkas (Amadeus Press, 1996, page 327):

“Jussi closed the autumn tour with a recital at Hunter College on 27 December 1959. His popularity and drawing power were such that he and Schauwecker had been invited back for this ‘concert extraordinary’ only nine months after their previous appearance. It was a capacity house; many people had to be seated on the stage behind him, but as always, Jussi sang at least one number or a couple of encores facing them. Cornell Mac- Neil recalls the night, the last time he heard Jussi sing.

About November 1959, Göran Forsling Apr 2021

About November 1959, Göran Forsling

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

I have already dealt with the autumn of 1959 in Jussi of the Month November 2018, ( on the Jussi Björling Sällskapet website) but when I now return there it is from a somewhat different perspective, which may perhaps offer a further dimension to the artistry of Jussi. That Jussi’s plans for that autumn were thwarted through illness and limited to a small number of appearances has been mentioned earlier, but it’s interesting to realize that almost all of those appearances were recorded and, at least partially issued on records. On 20 August he gave a concert at Gröna Lund …

Announcing Immortal Performances’ New Release Of Roméo Et Juliette: Notes For Roméo Release, Richard Caniell

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

Jussi Björling is particularly celebrated for his singing in Roméo et Juliette and La bohème, especially for a mixture of refulgent passion and much refinement in the characterizations sung in tones of such resplendency that we can scarcely believe such sound could be uttered by the human voice. These two roles are memorably represented by performances sung in his youth (in 1940) at the Royal Opera Stockholm. In March 2020 we are presenting our restoration of the complete 1940 Roméo et Juliette as well as a complete 1943 Act II. In addition the set includes the world premiere commercial …

Jussi’S Three Debuts At The Stockholm Opera, Nils-Göran Olve Apr 2021

Jussi’S Three Debuts At The Stockholm Opera, Nils-Göran Olve

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK

As readers of this journal may know Jussi Björling’s first role in opera was the tiny part of the Lamplighter in Manon Lescaut, a role which is only 18 bars long – but most of them solo – in that opera’s third act. That was on 21 July 1930, and the venue was of course the Stockholm Opera, or as it says on the poster “Kungl. Teatern” — an abbreviation for “Kungliga Teatern” — The Royal Theatre. If you can master rudimentary Swedish you can find it and much of the data that I will cite in this article on …
