An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor Jan 1956

An Investigation Of The Contribution Of Latter-Day Revelation To An Understanding Of The Atonement Of Christ, Eldon R. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the contributions of latter-day revelation to an understanding of the atonement of Christ in addition to that which is taught in the Bible.
It is generally acknowledged among Christians that the primary purpose of Christ's mission was to redeem mankind. The doctrine of the atonement contains the foundation principles of Chirstian faith and, yet the creeds of the several churches are in serious disagreement on many vital principles involved.
If the widely differing views are due to insufficient information in the bible, the question naturally follows - how does modern revelation clarify …

A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard May 1955

A Study Of The Problem Of A Personal Devil And Its Relationship To Latter-Day Saint Beliefs, Lamar E. Garrard

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of the existence of a devil is important, since it relates to other beliefs which a person or his religion may uphold. The orthodox Christian concepts of the divinity of Christ, the Fall of man, the Atonement, and the inspiration of the Bible are altered when a belief in Satan is discarded.

The prophets of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) take a very definite stand concerning the existence of Satan. They declare that the devil and his angels exist and that they tempt and try to deceive men. L.D.S. scriptures, given through modern revelation, …

Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call Jan 1955

Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call

Theses and Dissertations

Though generally unheard of in the Western world and the United States prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Filipino people have made some remarkable contributions to world leadership and world history. Frequently they have been considered a pagan and an ignorant people, although in objectively observing them one finds such a belief unfounded and even the reverse of that to be true. Progress which the republic has made during the last fifty years, since being liberated to develop liberties in religion, politics, and education, is phenomenal, even when compared with the United States period of evolution to her …

A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen Jan 1955

A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen

Theses and Dissertations

An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.

From outside of the church criticisms have arisen concerning certain changes, additions, and omissions made in the revelations as first written by Joseph Smith. When confronted …

The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine Jan 1955

The Juarez Stake Academy, Dale M. Valentine

Theses and Dissertations

While the history of the Latter-day Saints who colonized in Mexico is probably not generally known by the majority of Latter-day Saints living throughout the world today, it nevertheless comprises an exceptionally colorful and exciting chapter of the history of Mormonism. The Latter-day Saints who went to Mexico created there a culture and society which has never been duplicated. Probably one of the chief concerns of the Mormon Colonists in Mexico was to establish in their society a culture which would be lastingly enduring and which would progressively improve. Secondly, it is also probable that they were passionately desirous of …

The Origin And History Of The Fast Day In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, A. Dean Wengreen Jan 1955

The Origin And History Of The Fast Day In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, A. Dean Wengreen

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is two fold: first, to review the historical sources pertaining to the observance of fasting from the time of the establishment of the church in 1830 until 1896, when the last essential change in its observance occurred; and second, as the payment of fast offerings is so closely related to an analysis of the subject, to trace its development out of the Church's policy to provide for its poor.

Mormon-Indian Relations As Viewed Through The Walker War, H. Bartley Heiner Jan 1955

Mormon-Indian Relations As Viewed Through The Walker War, H. Bartley Heiner

Theses and Dissertations

Early Utah history involved many adjustments of differences between the pioneers and the Indians. This thesis is a study of the differences and of the policies adopted to alleviate them, particularly in the background, setting, and events of the Walker War.

The Mormons came into a territory inhabited by the aggressive Ute Indians. However, the niggardness of nature and the white man's oppression had reduced them to a condition of destitution. They had descended to trading, begging, and stealing. Possibly, with the idea of exploiting the Mormons, the Indians invited them to settle in various sections of the territory. The …

Administrative History Of The Nauvoo Legion In Utah, Ralph Hansen Jan 1954

Administrative History Of The Nauvoo Legion In Utah, Ralph Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The Nauvoo Legion takes its name from the city in Illinois which was the center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the early 1840's, when the Mormon militia was organized. When the Mormons were driven to the Rocky Mountains they revived the militia, in 1849, under its original title.

The legislative organization of the Utah Nauvoo Legion was carried out through enactments of three lawmaking bodies, the High Council of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Legislature of the State of Deseret, and the Legislature of the Territory of Utah.

A History Of Wasatch County, 1859-1899, Leslie Shupe Raty Jan 1954

A History Of Wasatch County, 1859-1899, Leslie Shupe Raty

Theses and Dissertations

This is an attempt to tell the story of the foundation and pioneer development of Wasatch County. The writer has tried to trace those factors in the pioneering venture which have made important contributions to present-day life in the county. This is also a story of the pioneers who settled here, a story of how they individually and collectively met the challenge of the frontier. But in addition to this, the effort has been made to picture one part of a phase in general Utah history, a phase which followed the original settlement, a phase in which an effort was …

Mormon Education In Theory And Practice 1830-1844, Virgil B. Smith Jan 1954

Mormon Education In Theory And Practice 1830-1844, Virgil B. Smith

The problem of this study was to discover and classify "Mormon" ideas current between 1830 and 1844 relating to educational theory and practice, and to compare the theory and practice. The hypothesis is that there were discrepancies in the theory and the practice.

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel Jan 1954

Freighting Between The Missouri River And Utah - 1847-1869, George Lofstrom Strebel

Theses and Dissertations

The problem for this thesis was undertaken because of an intense interest which the writer has in general Western History and more particularly in the History of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As the thousands of emigrants moved west to make their homes, they brought with them only enough supplies to support themselves for a relatively short time. When those supplies were gone they needed replacements in order not to bring hardships to the settlers. Where were these precious supplies to come from? Some few principally agricultural products could be produced, but by far the largest portion …

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson Jan 1954

The History Of The Drama In Corinne And Brigham City, Utah, 1855-1905, Rue Corbett Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

It is hoped that through the inclusion of the history of the drama in Corinne, Utah, some interesting contrasts can be shown. Such contrasts are heightened when it Is realized that geographically the two towns are very close and that unlike Brigham City, and other Utah towns, Corinne was non-Mormon. During its zenith it undoubtedly reflected the typical frontier town characteristics more than did the Mormon town nearby. This fact provides opportunity for comparison of two societies as reflected in their dramatic activities. This comparison should assist in evaluating the history and contributions of Mormon dramatic activity by helping to …

The Contributions Of The Temporary Settlements Garden Grove, Mount Pisgah, And Kanesville, Iowa, To Mormon Emigration, 1846-1852, L. Robert Webb

Theses and Dissertations

For years the writer has been very interested in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His work as a teacher, employed by the LDS department of education, has been with the youth of the church. His teaching experience has taken him through a chronological consideration or sequence of events of the church from its origin down to the present. However, the absence of historical data during the period of 1846-1852 grew into a problem in the writer's mind. After reading in the histories of the church a brief paragraph about Garden Grove and Mount Pisgah, …

(1) What is the philosophy of religion of these people as it pertains to predestination and fatalism?
(2) Does the philosophy of these people tend to be fatalistic, especially as it is reflected in their concept of the role of fate or God or providence in certain life and death situations?
(3) What is …

History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway Jan 1953

History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway

Theses and Dissertations

The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. It was the winter and early spring of 1846. The onlooker would have seen men, women, and children muffled against the wintry blast, walking or riding in covered wagons and lesser vehicles. Somehow these people were different from the occasional companies bound for points West. Many were ill equipped. Many had a look of gentility, or as the frontiersman might say, a "citified look." They kept to themselves and often …

The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner Jan 1953

The Position Of Adam In Latter-Day Scripture And Theology, Rodney Turner

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to determine, in so far as is possible, the views held by various leaders of the Latter-day Saints relative to Adam; and more especially, the official doctrine of the Church as to his place in its theology.
The problem is based, in part, on the divergent, and oft times bitter, claims and counter-claims of members, ex-members, and non-members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over "Mormon" teachings concerning Adam in the light of a certain address given by president Brigham Young in 1852. Indeed, this address, and the man who gave …

World Government As Envisioned In The Latter-Day Saint "City Of Zion.", Hyrum Leslie Andrus

Theses and Dissertations

The Latter-day Saints look forward to an era of righteous peace under a world government having its central seats of authority in the City of Zion which is to be built upon the American continent and in Jerusalem upon the eastern hemisphere. (The probelm of this thesis is limited more specifically to the development of Zion's branch of this world order.) The earliest accounts of their history give information relating to basic principles and doctrines which have consistently developed to form a relatively complete concept of principles inherent within this proposed organization. This movement, designated as the "cause of Zion" …

Emma Hale: Wife Of The Prophet Joseph Smith, Raymond T. Bailey Jan 1952

It will be the purpose of this thesis to point out some significant facts pertaining to these questions, garthered in the main, from primary sources such as the Journal History of the Church of Jesus …

History Of Utah State Prison 1850-1952, James B. Hill Jan 1952

History Of Utah State Prison 1850-1952, James B. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to present a general history of Utah State Prison in order that a record of that institution may be preserved. This phase of Utah history has long been neglected. It is hoped that a contribution has also been made to a better understanding of Utah's penal system.

The present penal system in use in the state of Utah had its beginning with the early Mormon settlements in Salt Lake Valley in 1847. The first laws and judicial bodies of the Mormons were very closely tied to their religious beliefs. The handling of criminals was …

David Whitmer, A Witness To The Divine Authenticity Of The Book Of Mormon, Ebbie L.V. Richardson Jan 1952

David Whitmer, A Witness To The Divine Authenticity Of The Book Of Mormon, Ebbie L.V. Richardson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis, DAVID WHITMER, A WITNESS TO THE DIVINE AUTHENTICITY OF THE BOOK OF MORMON, is an attempt to give an unbiased history of the life and religious activities of a man who spent fifty years apart from the Church he was so much an instrument in establishing. His testimony has been a considerable factor in promoting its growth and success. The title of this work was suggested by a text Mr. Whitmer wrote in the year previous to his demise; the subject, by A. William Lund, assistant Latter-day Saint Church Historian.
Particular emphasis has been placed upon that phase …

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr. Jan 1952

Evidences Of Culture Contacts Between Polynesia And The Americas In Precolumbian Times, John L. Sorenson Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

Of the great unsettled problems of archaeology and anthropology perhaps the most hotly debated has been the relative importance of migration, diffusion, and independent invention in the origin of culture elements. The question has obvious importance, both for a proper understanding of man and culture, that ambitiously comprehensive goal of modern anthropology, and for historical reconstruction, the latter a necessary preliminary of the former.

The concern of this thesis is with culture movement in the eastern Pacific Ocean area. The Pacific area as a whole has long been the geographical center of the diffusion problem (if we may so term …
