Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen Jan 1986

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the origin, development, and decline, from 1852 to 1904, of Salt Lake County's judicial precincts. A precinct functioned as the basic subdivision of county government. Its boundaries were generally coterminous with those of local communities. It was established to allow for a degree of local control by the people.
Chapter two reveals that precinct justices experienced over time a marked decline in socio-political prominence. This is largely due to legislative statutes that decreased their jurisdictional powers. Chapter three examines the evolution of precinct boundaries. It is demonstrated that geographic distribution of individuals played a major role in …

Cousin Laman In The Wilderness: The Beginnings Of Brigham Young's Indian Policy, Richard E. Bennett Jan 1986

Cousin Laman In The Wilderness: The Beginnings Of Brigham Young's Indian Policy, Richard E. Bennett

Faculty Publications

Historians of the American West have observed that compared with most other mid-19th century American overlanders, whether Oregon-bound farmers or California Agronauts, the Mormons enjoyed a relatively more amicable, more peaceful relationship with the American Indian. Furthermore several contend with cause that Brigham Young was the principal architect of peace with the Ute, Shoshoni, Navaho, Hopi, and other tribes in the deserts and valleys of "Deseret," the Mormon Zion in the Great Basin Kingdom. Leonard Arrington, Davis Bitton, James Allen, and other modern writers have argued that Young pursued a conciliatory (if not self protective and condescending) policy toward the …

Danish-American Literature In Transition, Dorothy Burton Skardal Jan 1986

Danish-American Literature In Transition, Dorothy Burton Skardal

The Bridge

Danish-American literature was written by Danish immigrants in the United States mainly about and for members of their own group. Their lives were lived in constant psychological and cultural flux undergoing the pressures of assimilation; therefore their literature both grew out of and recorded multifaceted processes of transition. Today the literature Danish immigrants wrote is itself in transition: long unread or forgotten, it is now being rediscovered by Americans of Danish heritage. This brief introduction to the main Danish-American writers is meant to stimulate still more to reclaim their heritage preserved in Danish-language fiction and poetry.

Christmas Letter To My Daughter In Denmark, Cynthia Norris Graae Jan 1986

Christmas Letter To My Daughter In Denmark, Cynthia Norris Graae

The Bridge

Twenty years ago, when I was a student (from the USA) at Someroille College, Oxford, a Danish student at Someroille invited me to her home for Christmas. My father had visited Denmark when he was fifteen, and the next year was a host to a Danish student at his home in Portland, Maine. I'd grown up with stories about his trip and his Danish guest, and I gladly accepted this invitation. Recently, my fifteen year old daugh- r ter spent a school year in Denmark. She lived with a family and studied at a Danish-speaking school, although she spoke almost …

Book Review: Conflict And Compromise In Multilingual Societies, Heinz K. Meier Nov 1985

Book Review: Conflict And Compromise In Multilingual Societies, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Kenneth D. McRae, professor of political science at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, has spent much of his academic career studying Swiss multilingualism and multiculturalism. In the course of his endeavors he has become an expert on the topic, as is reflected in the books and articles he has published on it, best known among them Switzerland: Example of Cultural Coexistence (1964). Since Canada is itself a linguistically and culturally divided country, Dr. McRae's work on Switzerland assumed a wider significance, inasmuch as it lent itself as a basis for comparison and, perhaps, instruction, especially in his function as a research …

Prefatory Note, Leo Schelbert, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

"Grandmother Joss consented, one evening in 1943, to tell me the story of her earlier years," explains her granddaughter Ruth Harbecke Jewett in the Preface to The Swiss Connection, The Lives and Times of Frederick Joss and Emily Bigler Joss and Their Descendants. (Chicago: Privately printed, 1983), 116 pp. Over forty years ago Ms. Jewett had taken copious notes of those conversations, but then forgotten them; when she rediscovered her notes some years ago, Ms. Jewett decided to use them as the core for a loving portrait of six generations of the Joss-Bigler family. Ms. Jewett has given gracious permission …

Tradition And Individualism: Hans Banziger's Books On Swiss And German Literature, Marianne Burkhard Jun 1985

Tradition And Individualism: Hans Banziger's Books On Swiss And German Literature, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Over the years, I have seen Hans Banziger here and there, on both sides of the Atlantic. His slender figure would appear in the midst of people crowding lecture rooms at meetings of the Modern Language Association in New York or Chicago, his smile would suddenly greet me, in the summer, at the library in Zurich, and whenever possible he would attend the annual meeting of the Swiss American Historical Society, an intent listener often adding thoughtful comments or questions. Rather short in stature, his grey hair closely cropped, he has always been, for me, an example of the "Swiss" …

My Life, Hans Banziger Jun 1985

My Life, Hans Banziger

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

One of my very young students having gotten once the task to write on his short lifetime introduced his witty essay with the remark that curricula vitae reminded him always of necrologies. He went on, using the fiction of a minister's sermon, to describe his career: "A promising young life came abruptly to an end; Karl X had wanted to become a teacher, but his grades were not good enough ... ". Thus, you might understand, why I myself hesitated a little when Marianne Burkhard asked me to write about my life. Memoirs always sound a little bit sad. But …
