The Heritage Of Niels Bohr, Russell J. Donnelly Jan 1986

The Heritage Of Niels Bohr, Russell J. Donnelly

The Bridge

Danish Americans, as publications in The Bridge attest, look back on their ancestral home with a wide variety of feelings. For a professional physicist Denmark is a legendary name, for in Copenhagen in the early twentieth century, there emerged in a remarkable way one of the greatest revolutions in human thought, the invention of quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics has had an enormous influence in physics and on the world, for in that brief period of time things were understood which had always evaded explanation: such as the structure and radiation of atoms and molecules, the behavior of metals, and the …

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund Jan 1986

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson Jan 1986

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1948 to 1980 is a study in cross-cultural interaction. Compared to the earlier attempts of the Church in proselytizing the Japanese in the period 1901 to 1924, there are some significant contrasts. The earlier mission is seen as an attempt by a small, relatively unknown, provincial religion, in financial straits, just emerging into the twentieth century, trying to establish itself in a non-christian, fiercely nationalistic, culturally closed nation.

From very humble beginnings, starting with second and third generation Japanese in Hawaii, and with LDS members of …

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson Jan 1986

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The speaking of John Taylor influenced the lives of Latter-day Saints for five decades. He delivered between two and three thousand addresses. In those addresses he promulgated a diversity of principles concerning the kingdom of God. This study focused on Taylor's ideas regarding liberty. Those ideas were often found in Taylor's speaking between 1857 and 1867. It was a time of threatened liberties for the people he lead. His speeches during those years played a significant part in swaying politcal and military efforts, as well as bolstering Mormon determination.

This study found that Taylor's ideas of liberty are based largely …

The Dancing Danes In America, Olga Strandvold Opfell Jan 1986

The Dancing Danes In America, Olga Strandvold Opfell

The Bridge

In an age that saw almost the total eclipse of the male in ballet, August Bournonville (1806-1879), a first-rate dancer, was determined to keep his equality with the ballerina. But he went beyond equality. At the Royal Danish Ballet, where he became a dancer-ballet master-choreographer in 1829, he created an amazing number of works that established the male position in Danish ballet. On the whole, there are now more good roles for male dancers in the Danish repertory than in any other. And the Danish male dancer has moved on from his position of ascendancy at the Royal Theater in …

Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen Jan 1986

Reflections On Denmark As It Was, And Emigration To America, Arlow W. Andersen

The Bridge

In the late medieval and modern periods the histories of Denmark and Norway paralleled each other. During much of that interval the Union of Kalmar (1397-1523), which included also a dynastic tie with Sweden, practically insured common political, economic, and religious development. On the threshold of the modern age Sweden broke away from the Union (1523), but Norway was obliged to remain under Danish rule until 1814.

The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side Of The Fence .... About The Early Life Of Peter Lassen, Rene Weybye Lassen Jan 1986

The Grass Is Always Greener On The Other Side Of The Fence .... About The Early Life Of Peter Lassen, Rene Weybye Lassen

The Bridge

Years ago, when I was a young boy, I remember my grandmother was telling about her grand-uncle. His name was Peter and he went to America many years before she was born. Just being a schoolboy at that time, I didn't pay much attention to what she was talking about. For me it was just the talk of old people, about their old folks, who were not alive any more. That couldn't really fascinate a twelve year old boy. Today I know I should have been listening with much more interest. One thing is for sure, however; I remember she …

Table Talk, L. C. Laursen Jan 1986

Table Talk, L. C. Laursen

The Bridge

Table Talk was prepared for the wedding of Margaret Hansen and Harvey Phillip of Enumclaw, Washington, at which L. C. Laursen was to have officiated. Laursen's sudden illness, an illness from which he did not recover, precluded him from delivering the talk. Table Talk comes from a Notebook Laursen presented to Margaret and Harvey Phillip, which was shown to Ruth and Ove Nielsen. They thought it deserved a wider readership and received permission from Betty Miller, daughter of L. C. Laursen, and Mr. and Mrs. Phillip to submit it for publication in The Bridge.

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias Jan 1986

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies Kenneth Burke's method of logology as exemplified in The Rhetoric of Religion to analyze the Mormon text Doctrine and Covenants Section 88. This method of logology is based on the assumption that what is said about God in theology reveals a religion's use of language to influence human motives. The logological method uses six analogies to discover the motives implicit in religious terminologies. These six analogies are as follows: words-Word, Matter-Spirit, the Negative, the Titular, Time-Eternity, and the Formal.

This study revealed that the terminology contained in Doctrine and Covenants uses motives far diferent from the motives …

Reasons American Indian Students Do Not Typically Choose Industrial Education As A Major At Byu, Sam Canyon

Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to examine reasons why American Indian students do not typically choose Industrial Education as a major at BYU. To identify reasons American Indian students do not typically choose Industrial Education as a major, a questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire was administered on and off BYU campus to 122 identified American Indian students. Ninety- two students completed and returned the survey, …

The Danish Immigrant, Signe Nielsen Betsinger Jan 1986

The Danish Immigrant, Signe Nielsen Betsinger

The Bridge

In 1979 I had the opportunity to travel with a group to China where I had the good fortune to visit Tachai, a model agricultural commune. Up until the mid-1940s, generations of the inhabitants in this area had been impoverished. They had lived in caves in hills. Their crops had been destroyed over and over by drought, flooding, insects, and hailstorms. In 1945 land reform was insituted and the peasants set up the first mutual aid team in China. By 1953 they had a ten-year plan for reclaiming the land and building new homes. Just when the plan was finished …

Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life: An Anagogic Interpretation, Julie Adams Maddox Jan 1986

Lehi's Vision Of The Tree Of Life: An Anagogic Interpretation, Julie Adams Maddox

Theses and Dissertations

The significance of Lehi's life tree is that it gives life. Lehi's tree expresses the nonverbal, renews Lehi, effectually creates a culture, and keys the structure of a literary, viable, and contemporary scripture. My thesis chapters grow out of my reading of myth, tree mythology, and Lehi's dream. I see Lehi 1) traveling a polemic course toward the tree, 2) confronting the tree's death, and 3) by suffering, opening the symbol to his inner vision.
Lehi's first dream images, a dark and dreary wilderness vs. a man in white, suggest the birth of mythic creation. By traveling through and reconciling …

From Babylon To Zion: The Life Of William Mclachlan, A British Convert To The Mormon Church, Winifred Morse Mclachlan Jan 1986

From Babylon To Zion: The Life Of William Mclachlan, A British Convert To The Mormon Church, Winifred Morse Mclachlan

Theses and Dissertations

William McLachlan, a Scotsman, was converted to the L. D. S. Church, in Braintree, Essex, England in 1859. The motivating factor in his life was his faith that Joseph Smith was a prophet to whom the Lord had restored the precepts of the original Christian church. His journals, his letters, his speeches, his life, were oriented toward one ultimate goal, to build the Kingdom of God and to gain a place for himself and his family in that kingdom.
This thesis is a biography of his life and examines his emigration to Zion, his settlement and adjustment to the frontier, …

Barnabe Googe's Zodiake Of Life: A Translation Reconsidered, Marc Beckwith Jan 1986

Barnabe Googe's Zodiake Of Life: A Translation Reconsidered, Marc Beckwith

Quidditas

Marcellus Palingenius' Zodiacus Vitae in twelve books (Venice [1535?]) was exceedingly popular in Reformation Europe. In nearly 10,000 lines of Latin hexameters

are conteined twelue seuerall labours, painting out moste liuely, the whole compasse of the world, the reformation of manners, the miseries of mankinde, the pathway to vertue and vice, the eternitie of the Soule, the course of the Heavens, the mysteries of nature, and diuers other circumstances of great learning, and no lesse judgement,

as Barnabe Googe summarized it on the title page of his translation in 1576. The ZV saw over sixty editions as well as translations …

A Moral Voice For The Restoration Lady: A Comparative View Of Allestree And Vives, John A. Thomas Jan 1986

A Moral Voice For The Restoration Lady: A Comparative View Of Allestree And Vives, John A. Thomas

Quidditas

Following the civil strife of the 1640s and the Interregnum of the 1650s, Anglican England felt the necessity of spiritual housecleaning to tighten its hold on the godly and to ferret out dissenting influences. Evidence of renewed authoritarianism is seen in Richard Allestree's early appointment in the 1660s as a lecturer for the city of Oxford, where his task was to establish the faith and to root out schismatical opinions propagated by "false" teachers of the Interregnum. In 1662 Charles was to pass measures, albeit reluctantly, requiring strict conformity concerning practices in the church not unlike those enforced by Laud. …

Sidney's Debt To Machiavelli: A New Look, William R. Drennan Jan 1986

Sidney's Debt To Machiavelli: A New Look, William R. Drennan

Quidditas

"I wish not there should be / Graved in mine epitaph a poet's name," asserts Astrophil late in Sidney's sonnet sequence (AS 90.8-9), and on this point at least we may safely assume that Astrophil speaks for Sidney as well. Indeed, recent scholarship emphasizes that Sidney was drawn more to the arena of politics than to the world of letters, a world that he himself called only his "unelected vocation" (Works 3: 3). James M. Osborn, for example, in his Young Philip Sidney 1572-1577, stresses Sidney's patient preparation for and lifelong commitment to the theory and practice of …

Axel Pedersen - Timber Engineer, Olga Strandvold Opfell Jan 1986

Axel Pedersen - Timber Engineer, Olga Strandvold Opfell

The Bridge

H. C. 0rsted (1777-1851), the world-famous discoverer of electromagnetism, had a deep understanding of the close connection between science and technology. As director of the Polytechnical College (later named the Technical University of Denmark), he inspired a succession of technical discoveries, inventions, and industries. Since his day Danish engineers have been known for their training, ingenuity, and rigorous standards. Those who have come to the United States have invariably demonstrated the superiority of their methods. The story of one such Danish-American engineer follows.

Über Goethes "Classiker Und Romantiker In Italien [...]", Ilona Klein Jan 1986

Über Goethes "Classiker Und Romantiker In Italien [...]", Ilona Klein

Faculty Publications
