Introduction To Articles From The 2014 Annual Conference Of The Russian State University For The Humanities American Studies Center: Special Section On Humanities+, N. Anthony Brown

Russian Language Journal

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, Professor Marina Kaul of the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU), together with Professor Irwin Weil of Northwestern University, co-founded the American Studies Center at RGGU, the two-fold goals of which were 1) to expose post-Soviet Russian scholars and students to a reasonably objective view and appreciation of American history, culture, and politics; and 2) to help American scholars and students to see themselves as others saw them. Thus far, the Center has held annual conferences, facilitated professional and student exchanges, and published numerous conference proceedings. It has enjoyed the …

The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen Jan 2014

The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen

Russian Language Journal

The Language Flagship program provides a model that strengthens and deepens cultural engagement within the humanities and creates bridges to collaboration across disciplines. Flagship addresses needs for national security and global competitiveness and integrates professional and life experience into the humanities and other fields for the students who engage in this course of study. The cross-disciplinary nature of the Flagship program and the level of personal, cultural and professional engagement required to complete the program are successfully changing the undergraduate study experience in ways that address significant issues in the ongoing discussion of a crisis in the humanities. The Language …

The University Of Rhode Island International Engineering Program: A Model For The Merger Of Technology And The Humanities, John M. Grandin, Sigrid Berka Jan 2014

The University Of Rhode Island International Engineering Program: A Model For The Merger Of Technology And The Humanities, John M. Grandin, Sigrid Berka

Russian Language Journal

Contrary to a long-established and seemingly irrefutable tradition, American parents, educators, private and public sector leaders, and students are beginning to doubt the value of a university education. Charges have been leveled, for example, that students today are spending substantially less time on academics than their predecessors and are making little progress during their undergraduate years in their ability to read, write, speak, or think analytically and critically (see, for example, Arum and Roksa 2011, Vedder and Denhart 2011). Others have argued that college is burdening young people with lifelong debt to the degree that it is stifling their creativity …

Foreign Language Study Coupled With Internship Experience As An Entrée To Professional Opportunities, N. Anthony Brown Jan 2014

Foreign Language Study Coupled With Internship Experience As An Entrée To Professional Opportunities, N. Anthony Brown

Russian Language Journal

Today’s global age presents its share of unique challenges, not the least of which is communication. Whereas in past centuries, fossil fuels played a central role in driving economies and influencing policy decisions, “language is the new oil” in the twenty-first century.1 Some forward thinking individuals and organizations have responded to the times and teamed up with universities and government agencies to develop new and innovative foreign language programs. Consider, for example, the U.S. federally funded National Flagship Language Program that offers upwards of nine months to one year of intensive language instruction in the target language culture and experiential …

On Semantic Peculiarities Of Secondary Imperfective Verbs In Russian: Their In/Compatibility With The Notions Of Duration And Completion, Valentina S. Soboleva Jan 2014

On Semantic Peculiarities Of Secondary Imperfective Verbs In Russian: Their In/Compatibility With The Notions Of Duration And Completion, Valentina S. Soboleva

Russian Language Journal

It is a well-known fact that some secondary imperfective verbs in Russian cannot express duration – a notion, ascribed to the imperfective aspect. Of the three, or even four, possible aspectual meanings of the imperfective aspect – duration / progressive continuity, general validity, and repetition – some secondary imperfective verbs are limited to expressing only iterativity, a notion of repetition, embedded in their lexical semantics. The interpretation of the term iterativity in this work is close to the one given by Mehlig (2006) in which the iterative predicate describes an unbounded number of repetitions and the particular meaning is embedded …

Politeness And Sociocultural Values In American And Russian Cultures Emerging From The Speech Act Of Complaint; Pragmatic Competence Of L2 Learners Of Russian, Beata Gallaher Jan 2014

Politeness And Sociocultural Values In American And Russian Cultures Emerging From The Speech Act Of Complaint; Pragmatic Competence Of L2 Learners Of Russian, Beata Gallaher

Russian Language Journal

In the last two decades, there has been an increasing number of empirical studies on complaints that explore the effects of sociocultural values and linguistic politeness on the language performance of nativeand non-native speakers of English (Kasper 1981; Piotrowska 1987; Olshtain and Weinbach 1987, 1993; Trosborg 1995; Arent 1996; Murphy and Neu 1996; Kraft and Geluykens 2002, 2007; Tanck 2002; Umar 2006; Prykarpatska 2008). However, the empirical data on complaints by Russian native and non-native speakers remains scarce (Olshtain and Weinbach 1993; Gershenson 2003; Kozlova 2004; Perelmutter 2010). The research on complaints is particularly important for studying the impact of …

Measures Of Written Linguistic Accuracy: Questions Of Reliability, Validity, And Practicality, Troy L. Cox, Norman W. Evans, K. James Hartshorn, Teresa Martin De Jel Jan 2014

Measures Of Written Linguistic Accuracy: Questions Of Reliability, Validity, And Practicality, Troy L. Cox, Norman W. Evans, K. James Hartshorn, Teresa Martin De Jel

Faculty Publications

Determining linguistic improvement in L2 writing requires a precise measure of linguistic accuracy. Although numerous metrics of linguistic accuracy have been used in L2 research, Wigglesworth and Foster (2008) proposed a new kind of measure—a weighted clause ratio—based on the adequacy of the writer’s conveyed meaning. This paper evaluates the validity of this metric and compares it to two of the most similar measures of linguistic accuracy currently in use: the error-free T-unit ratio and the error-free clause ratio. The data collected and analyzed in this study were drawn from over 350 writing samples generated by 81 ESL writers whose …

Empirical Validation Of Listening Proficiency Guidelines, Troy L. Cox, Ray Clifford Jan 2014

Empirical Validation Of Listening Proficiency Guidelines, Troy L. Cox, Ray Clifford

Faculty Publications

Because listening has received little attention and the validation of ability scales describing multidimensional skills is always challenging, this study applied a multistage, criterion‐referenced approach that used a framework of aligned audio passages and listening tasks to explore the validity of the ACTFL and related listening proficiency guidelines. Rasch measurement and statistical analyses of data generated in seven separate language studies resulted in significant differences in listening difficulty between the proficiency levels tested and confirmed the validity of the ACTFL proficiency assessment for listening.

Variables Affecting L2 Gains During Study Abroad, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen Jan 2014

Variables Affecting L2 Gains During Study Abroad, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen

Faculty Publications

Second language (L2) gains during study abroad have been related to several variables including length of stay (Llanes, 2011), language use (Martinsen, Baker, Dewey, Bown, & Johnson, 2010), and social network development (Isabelli‐ García, 2006), among others. However, most studies have investigated only a few predictors in single study abroad programs. While these findings are helpful, larger scale studies are needed to better understand the variables that contribute to L2 gains across several different cultures and learner groups. The current study examines predictors of L2 gain of more than 100 native English speakers who participated in study abroad in Mexico, …

Does Measuring L2 Utterance Fluency Equal Measuring Overall L2 Proficiency? Evidence From Five Languages, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen Jan 2014

Does Measuring L2 Utterance Fluency Equal Measuring Overall L2 Proficiency? Evidence From Five Languages, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen

Faculty Publications

The current study examined the relationship between overall second language (L2) proficiency and utterance fluency measures for several L2s in order to determine whether utterance measures can be used to predict L2 proficiency. The study measured the speech rate, number of hesitations, number and length of pauses, number and length of runs, and number of false starts using excerpts from 126 ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPIs) spoken by 86 participants. Forty of the participants provided pre‐ and post‐OPI speech samples, which also allowed examination of changes over time. All 86 participants were native English speakers who spoke L2 French, German, …

Language Use In Six Study Abroad Programs: An Exploratory Analysis Of Possible Predictors, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen, Carrie Gold, Dennis Eggett Jan 2014

Language Use In Six Study Abroad Programs: An Exploratory Analysis Of Possible Predictors, Wendy Baker-Smemoe, Dan P. Dewey, Jennifer Brown, Rob A. Martinsen, Carrie Gold, Dennis Eggett

Faculty Publications

A common predictor of language gains during study abroad (SA) is amount of language use. Yet little attention has been given to determining what factors influence the extent of language use while abroad. Studies in this area have mainly been case studies of learners in single locations. In this larger study, we seek to determine variables connected with language use by examining 118 learners studying abroad in Madrid, Merida (Mexico), Paris, Moscow, Nanjing, or Cairo. These learners reported their second language (L2) use over a 1-week period during their stay. Significant predictors of reported L2 use include SA program, age, …

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker, David Bowie Jan 2014

Linguistic Behavior And Religious Activity, Wendy Baker, David Bowie

Faculty Publications

Studies have found that Mormons and non-Mormons in Utah exhibit significant linguistic differences. We break this down further by investigating whether there are also differences between Mormons who actively participate in the religion and those who do not, and find significant differences with a medium or larger effect size between the groups for multiple variables. We conclude that when investigating the linguistic correlates of religious affiliation in a community, it is vital to elicit not just respondents’ religious affiliations, but also their level of participation within that religion.

Diocletian’S Victory Column And The Rhetoric Of Spectacular Disruption, Richard Benjamin Crosby Jan 2014

Diocletian’S Victory Column And The Rhetoric Of Spectacular Disruption, Richard Benjamin Crosby

Faculty Publications

This essay explores how the powerful system of cultural references in the architecture of Alexandria is disrupted by Roman visual rhetoric. Specifically, the essay closely analyzes Diocletian’s Victory Column, a monument to the third-century Roman ruler who put down an Alexandrian uprising. The authors argue that Rome employed a visual rhetoric of spectacular disruption as a means to insert itself into the city’s historical identity even after its siege created widespread disease and starvation. The essay builds on the substantial scholarship on public memory by describing a kind of rhetoric that poses a political, existential challenge to a reigning cultural …

Islam, meaning peace or submission, is a major world religion founded by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century c.e. Muslims (literally “ones who submit”) number more than 1 billion, approximately one-fifth of the world’s population. Because of the perceived negative portrayal of Islam in the media, particularly in the United States and other Western countries, Muslim organizations have begun to stress that traditional and moderate Islam—which is observed by a large majority of the global Muslim population—is family-centered and nonviolent.

Sharia Law, Trevan Hatch Jan 2014

Sharia Law, Trevan Hatch

Sharia is the Islamic legal code that serves as an ethical, practical, and religious guide for practicing Muslims. Sharia has been variously translated from Arabic as "the way," "the correcting path," or literally "the path leading to the watering place." Sharia has Sunni and Shia variations as well as different schools of jurisprudence within those traditions, but all sharia is rooter in the Qur'an (or Koran, the primary sacred text of Islam) and the lived example of the Prophet Muhammad, as discussed in the hadith (a body of traditions concerning the Prophet Muhammad's life and revelations). these two sources are …

Review Of Portraits Of The Artist As A Young Woman: Paintings And The Novel In France And Britain, 1800-1860 By Alexandra K. Wettlaufer, Heather Belnap Jensen Jan 2014

Review Of Portraits Of The Artist As A Young Woman: Paintings And The Novel In France And Britain, 1800-1860 By Alexandra K. Wettlaufer, Heather Belnap Jensen

Faculty Publications

Alexandra K. Wettlaufer’s ambitious study of real and fictitious woman painters in early nineteenth-century France and Britain explores the subject of female artistic self-fashioning at a critical historical juncture. Characterizing this as an auspicious time for the development of the woman artist, the author seeks to examine how historical figures and fictional characters both marked as well as facilitated this process. The stated rationale for the use of a comparative approach is that it enables the author “to highlight the dialogic context in which these novels and paintings were produced and consumed, and to map out aesthetic and political intersections …

Blending Informational Texts And Readers Theatre To Promote Authentic Inquiry, Dawan Coombs, Terrell A. Young

Faculty Publications

Learning with informational texts doesn’t need to be restricted to the recall of information and facts; instead, challenging students to interpret and present their findings in the form of readers theatre performances requires the application of synthesis and analysis skills. This article frames informational texts and readers theatre as complimentary approaches that, when used together, address the demands of the reading, presenting, and writing standards of 21st century English language arts classrooms while also providing opportunities for students to write creativity. Through an example based on a student-directed inquiry of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the authors present an …
