Indigenismo In The Mexican Photographs Of Tina Modotti: The Revolutionary And The Indigenista, Shannon Dame
Indigenismo In The Mexican Photographs Of Tina Modotti: The Revolutionary And The Indigenista, Shannon Dame
Theses and Dissertations
During Tina Modotti's time in Mexico in the 1920s, much of her photography and political activities focused on and fought for the rights of those who had been previously overlooked and marginalized, namely the indigenous people of Mexico. Many government officials, artists and intellectuals at the time believed that it was through the indigenous culture that Mexico could redeem itself and create its own national identity. Indigenismo, the philosophy that supported this claim, was of interest to Modotti and was a recurring theme throughout her photography. Following the Mexican Revolution of 1910, indigenismo appeared to be the solution to …
Preparing Young Children To Respond To Art In The Museum, Nancy L. Stewart
Preparing Young Children To Respond To Art In The Museum, Nancy L. Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis describes a research study which the Investigator prepared and documented. It involved two groups of five kindergarten children who were prepared by the Investigator to view one artwork in a museum. Children were prepared to view the artwork by exploring and solving open-ended design problems with large shapes, one-third the size of those in the artwork. The Investigator guided children to respond to the artwork through inquiry and discovery activities related to the artwork's specific characteristics. Findings revealed that kindergarten children enjoyed exploring large shapes and were capable of solving collaborative design problems with the shapes, which prepared …

Appendix: Meeting Of The Veterans In Luzern, January 29, 1899
Swiss American Historical Society Review
A gathering of Swiss veterans of the American Civil War was suggested by Colonel Emil Frey. He was a Veteran of that War, having served as major in the 82nd Illinois Infantry Regiment, and he was taken prisoner in the battle of Gettysburg. He returned to Switzerland where he pursued a successful career in public life. Between 1892 and 1897 he was a Federal Councilor (Bundesrat), that is a member of the seven-member executive branch of the Swiss Government, being in charge of the Military Department. In October 1898 Captain Casimir Muri sent out a call to …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
I came back to New Orleans. There one talked about nothing else but war. The northern and southern states rebelled against each other. In the latter, Negro slaves were used in the cotton- and sugar cane plantations. The others abhorred the trade with people and worked toward the abolition of slavery. For many years the Democrats, as the friends of slavery called themselves, were successful in winning for one of theirs the presidential election that took place every four years and thereby dominated the federal government.

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: My Trip To California, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Now that the war was finished, I had to look for a job. I decided to go first to New York. I didn't take along the many and large mattresses on which I had rested during four years, nor could the "guards" that used to jump in the grass follow me, and they probably have not escaped their certain death. So I came to New York. It was twelve at night. We could leave the boat only the next morning because all inns were closed. Thus I headed to town in the early morning hours and saw a sign that …

Adventures In North America Based On My Own Experiences: About Gold Digging, Andreas Hanselmann, Ch. H. Im Bundt, Richard Blatter, Translator, Leo Schelbert, Editor
Swiss American Historical Society Review
In the year 1848, 25 men traveled from New York to California. They had heard that gold had been found there, and they wanted to try their luck. When they sailed along the Mexican coast, they stopped at a small town to get drinking water. They saw a brickyard, and one of the group named Gehn was observing curiously how bricks were formed. The owner of the brickyard now asked him, whether he was somehow familiar with the business. Gehn answered that he was a professional brick maker and had worked since his youth in his father's brickmaking business. The …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
After having spent two dozen years in California, I decided to return to my home country Switzerland. I arrived in New York by the shortest way. Several times I had read in newspapers about the "Hotel St. Gotthard," and I thought that this must be a Swiss hotel. So I went to that place. When I entered the dining room the landlady welcomed me with friendly words. I answered: "The way you talk you must be from the Toggenburg." "Yes, I am," she replied, "I am born Alpiger from Alt St. Johann, and my husband is a citizen from the …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
Andreas Hanselmann (1825-1905) had his roots in the Toggenburg, a valley belonging to the Canton St.Gallen and situated in the northeastern part of Switzerland. Born in 1825, he left his wife Susette and his two children-a son who died early and a daughter Frieda, born 1856 in Wattwil-in 1860 and went to the United States. In those days, the dominant textile industry in the Toggenburg was hit by an economic crisis that led also others to emigrate, but Hanselmann offers no explanation for his departure. Being caught by the Civil War in New Orleans shortly after his arrival, he enrolled …

The renowned Saigyo scholar Mezaki Tokue wrote a famous essay called "The Saigyo Within Basho" (Basho no uchinaru Saigyo) in which he traces the influence of Saigyo's persona and poetry on that of Matsuo Basho. The approach of this essay differs as it aims to uncover and recognize the nascent aspects of Basho's poetics in Saigyo's own unique poetics. Certain aspects of Saigyo's approach to traditional waka poetry were in fact harbingers of what Haruo Shirane has termed "haikai imagination," the sort of poetic approach espoused and developed by Basho five centuries after Saigyo.

Jon Jonsson (Jón Jónsson), a catalytic Icelandic convert to Mormonism, was a gifted poet and translator whose literary work focused on the theme of salvation. Perhaps his most valuable contribution to Mormon history is that he is the first known person to translate a portion of the Book of Moron into Icelandic. He completed a translation of the First Book of Nephi in 1881.

This study examined the lived experience of students participating in foreign language houses to improve their skills in Russian, French, or Japanese. American students residing in apartments with other language learners and a nativespeaking resident facilitator were required to speak with one another exclusively in the target language and participate in activities such as preparing and eating dinner together. Data sources for the study included interviews, observations, and video recordings. The data, which were analyzed qualitatively, revealed that the central experience of living in the foreign language house was the creation of a livable community and that use of the …

Portuguese As A Foreign Language: Motivations And Perceptions, Desiree Oliveira
Theses and Dissertations
Portuguese enrollments have been on a continuous rise at universities in the United States. Due to this increase it is important that teachers and department administrators understand what the motivations of Portuguese students are. This study reports on the findings of a survey conducted with lower-level Portuguese students at Brigham Young University regarding their motivations to study the language and compares these motivations with those of students of French, German, Italian, and Spanish. In addition, the study reports on students' perspectives on Portuguese in contrast to their perspectives on these other four European languages. Other issues considered include Portuguese students' …

An Evaluation Of The Implementation Of A Call Program In A Pilot Curriculum At The Provo Lds Missionary Training Center, Amberly Patch Betteridge
Theses and Dissertations
The current study examines the implementation of one computer-assisted language learning program (CALL) called Technology Assisted Language Learning (TALL) in a pilot language curriculum at the LDS Missionary Training Center. Because CALL implementation is determined in large part by how successfully users are able to use the computer program to learn language, a primary purpose of this study was to investigate which implementation issues affected the language learning success of the missionaries that used TALL in the pilot curriculum. A survey was, therefore, designed and administered to 86 missionaries from French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin language areas in order to …

Taking The Gospel To The Lamanites: Doctrinal Foundations For Establishing The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Mexico, Matthew G. Geilman
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a study about the influence of the Book of Mormon message to the Lamanites upon the establishment of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Mexico, primarily focusing upon the years 1875-1950. Several important events, people, and publications from the first seventy-five years of the Church's history in Mexico are evaluated as historical case studies in order to examine the extent to which the message to the Lamanites influenced the beginnings of the Latter-day Saints there. These case studies include the first mission to Mexico in 1875, early publications in Spanish, the dedication of Mexico …

On July 14, 1944, The New York Times reported that French citizens in New York were celebrating both the liberation of Normandy and Bastille Day. The French consul general in New York, Guerin de Beaumont, expressed gratitude for what he called the first time since the beginning of World War II that the French were able to celebrate the holiday in recently freed Normandy without interference. He expressed the hope that "perhaps in another year all of France will be able to celebrate the day so..."
Mormon Contributions To Young Adult Literature, Toni Pilcher
Mormon Contributions To Young Adult Literature, Toni Pilcher
Student Works
Mormon authors are making big splashes in the world of young adult (YA) literature, a relatively young genre that is targeted at readers from age 12 to age 18. Since 1967, when the American Library Association officially recognized YA literature as separate from children's books, writers and publishers have been trying to define the genre. It is, in a sense, coming of age. Generally, to be considered YA, a book has to have a teenage protagonist in situations with which a teenage reader can identify. Like literature for adults, there are a few limitations to subject and theme, but unlike …
Comparing Fundamentalisms: A Social Movement Theory Approach, David Romney
Comparing Fundamentalisms: A Social Movement Theory Approach, David Romney
Student Works
The last forty years have witnessed the emergence of a number of Islamist and Jewish fundamentalist groups, resulting in a number of comparative studies that try to explain this phenomenon (e.g. Antoun and Hegland 1987; Sivan and Friedman 1990). Although scholars have argued varying reasons for this recent religious resurgence, most have recognized the importance of the 1967 war to both Jewish and Islamist fundamentalist movements. Some of these scholars see the religious resurgence following this war as a continuation of religious sentiments expressed by pre-1967 Zionist and fundamentalist Islamic groups rather than as a new movement (Davis 1987, 149-152).

Literary Love(R)S: Recognizing The Female Outline And Its Implications In Roman Verse Satire, Kaitlyn Marie Klein
Literary Love(R)S: Recognizing The Female Outline And Its Implications In Roman Verse Satire, Kaitlyn Marie Klein
Theses and Dissertations
The existence of a metaphoric female standing in for poetic style was only plainly discussed in a paper from 1987 concerned with Roman elegiac poetry. This figure is given the title of scripta puella or written woman, since her existence depends solely on the writings of an author. These females often appear to have basis in reality; however there is insufficient evidence to allow them to cross out of the realm of fantasy. The term scripta puella in poetry refers to a perfected poetic form, one the author prefers over all others, and a human form creates the illusion of …

A Hell House Divided: Performing Identity Politics Through Christian Mediums Of Proselytization, Allan N. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Every year, during the month of October, hundreds of Christian churches throughout the United States open the doors of their Hell House to surrounding communities. Hell Houses are Christian haunted houses designed to literally scare the Hell out of visitors so they will accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior. In the place of vampires or zombies, Hell Houses portray the sins Satan is mostly likely to tempt teenagers to commit. Scenes include young girls receiving abortions, young men believing lies that they were born gay, and careless individuals drinking and driving. As para-theatrical performances, Hell Houses lead …
Identifying How Successful Vocabulary-Learning Strategies Affect Reading Comprehension Among Intermediate Learners Of Mandarin Chinese, Hongyi Jia
Theses and Dissertations
The Chinese language has become an increasingly important Asian language for American students and more and more of them have a desire to learn it. The problems and the difficulties that Chinese foreign language (CFL) learners have when they try to use their knowledge of new vocabulary in reading comprehension are apparent. Previous studies have described some aspects that may influence reading comprehension and have indicated that Chinese is a relatively difficult language for native speakers of American English, but there are few studies that have focused on improving CFL learners' Chinese reading comprehension. This study investigates the effect of …

First Psalm: Poems And Paintings, Ashley Mae Christensen
Theses and Dissertations
This collection of poems and paintings seeks to find the places where visual and written communication intersects, and the places where those two media diverge. The collection consists of poems and paintings juxtaposed, as if in conversation with one another throughout the pages. The collection treats each painting and poem as a separate attempt at prayer. As a reader turns the pages, similar questions are asked again and again, but in different settings and with different outcomes. This collection focuses on finding reconciliation between the oral culture of storytelling and the written culture of ideas, all within the context of …
