Oral Tradition And Literary Innovation In An Epigraphic Oracle: Claros And Caesarea Trocetta During The Antonine Plague, Ryo Nagao May 2026

Oral Tradition And Literary Innovation In An Epigraphic Oracle: Claros And Caesarea Trocetta During The Antonine Plague, Ryo Nagao

New England Classical Journal

During the Antonine Plague, the Lydian community of Caesarea Trocetta consulted the oracle of Apollo at Claros and inscribed its response, which was exceptional in form and language. This paper argues that Claros drew on performative literature and oracular traditions to provide an authoritative and innovative response that mediated the distress of the client community. Polymetry, diction, and intertexts with Pausanias and Statius combine to enhance both the aesthetic and religious function of the text. This analysis contributes to the study of epigraphy as literature, the mechanisms of oracular institutions, and civic responses to pandemic.

Weekly Published Magazine Covers During World War Ii: Cover Photos Used To Represent The Wartime Experience, Annika B. Larson May 2026

Weekly Published Magazine Covers During World War Ii: Cover Photos Used To Represent The Wartime Experience, Annika B. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Weekly published magazines served largely as news outlets during World War II, and the images on the covers of these magazines were not only an attention catcher and tone setter, but were images chosen to represent the ever-changing landscape both on the homefront and internationally. In addition, these publications often used photographs that represented the developments their allies and enemies were making in tandem with domestic coverage. The entities publishing the magazines were managed by both the government and independent civilians, dependent on the country, thus providing different views of the war. The coverage in the United States and United …

All But The Death Penalty: Incomplete Protection For Civilian Internee Mothers, Minju Kwon May 2026

All But The Death Penalty: Incomplete Protection For Civilian Internee Mothers, Minju Kwon

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

How did unrecognised gender biases impact the codification of international humanitarian law (IHL)? While recent studies on IHL have highlighted historical lawmaking processes, little research has examined gender biases behind the codification of the “Protection of Women” in the Geneva Conventions and additional protocols. This study examines gender biases and state interests reflected in the codification process by focusing on Article 76§3 of the 1977 Protocol Additional I, which incompletely protects civilian women internees who are pregnant or have dependent children by prohibiting execution but leaving room for pronouncement of the death penalty. Referring to the theory of benevolent sexism, …

The Bloom Of Atē: Women's Lives, Pain, And Metaphor In Sophocles' Trachinian Women, Casey Dué, Mary Ebbott May 2026

The Bloom Of Atē: Women's Lives, Pain, And Metaphor In Sophocles' Trachinian Women, Casey Dué, Mary Ebbott

New England Classical Journal

This essay explores recurring metaphors for pain in the Trachinian Women and argues that they gain their meaning from the experiences of the women Deianeira and Iole, to later express the physical pain of Herakles, which is further conceptualized as atē. These metaphors employ imagery associated with natural cycles, such as blooming flowers and ocean waves. The metaphorical connections between the women’s emotional pain and Herakles’ physical agony helps us to arrive at a fuller understanding of what is meant when Herakles concludes that he is “like a parthenos” and has been found to be female (1071 and …

To Be Closer, Sarah Moschel Miller May 2026

To Be Closer, Sarah Moschel Miller

LSU Master's Theses

to be closer explores the intersection of yearning and unease. This series of works uses the visual language of the body and its thresholds to explore how each of us builds interpersonal relationships and understandings of self. Pulling from abjection theory, the abject comes from the internal becoming external, the crossing of a bodily or personal threshold. My sculptures, vessels, and prints translate the visual language of the border of the body into a discussion of emotional ones. to be closer uses these corporeal thresholds and the language of the uncanny as vehicles to discuss the crossing of emotional …

Hope And The Handiwork Of Varda: Celestial Signposts Of The Music’S Mending, Kristine Larsen May 2026

Hope And The Handiwork Of Varda: Celestial Signposts Of The Music’S Mending, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

Varda, the Queen of the Valar, wields tremendous cosmological power in Tolkien’s legendarium. It is not without cause that Melkor fears her, as her power is literally written in the stars for all to see. Not only do her bright stars and constellations provide light against the darkness, but two of her creations – the Valacirca (Big Dipper) and Menelmacar (Orion) – are direct and intentional warning signs to Melkor of his unavoidable defeat in the Last Battle at the end of days. Indeed, Melkor’s capture by the armies of the Valar at the end of the First Age is …

No Excuses. All Ownership. Music As Meaning, Business As Longevity, Taylor Atherton-Henry May 2026

No Excuses. All Ownership. Music As Meaning, Business As Longevity, Taylor Atherton-Henry

Student Theses

Music has always been more than a creative outlet for me; it is a reflection of identity, emotion, discipline, and the way I move through the world. Long before it became a profession or an academic pursuit, music functioned as a language through which I could process experience, express love, and make sense of both joy and struggle. As I progressed through this program, it became increasingly clear that my artistic development and professional aspirations were evolving simultaneously. What began as separate goals, creating an album and establishing a music production company, ultimately became inseparable. Each process informed and strengthened …

Introduction

This capstone project is a pop rock album, including seven original songs written, performed, recorded, and mixed by myself. I will also talk about the evolution of my practice and my artisthood.

Wibbly-Wobbly Timey-Wimey Inklings: Tolkien And Lewis’S Relative Dimensions In Space-Time, Kristine Larsen

Journal of Tolkien Research

As noted in Tolkien's letters, around 1936 he and C.S. Lewis agreed to each try their hand at writing "an excursionary 'Thriller'" – essentially science fiction – "each discovering myth." They supposedly “tossed up,” with Lewis drawing a "Space-journey" and Tolkien a "Time-journey" (Letters 39). The standard answer is that this bet resulted in a trio of published space-travel novels for Lewis (Out of the Silent Planet [1938], Perelandra [1943], and That Hideous Strength [1945]) and two incomplete and abandoned time-travel projects for Tolkien, The Lost Road (incomplete typescript dating to 1937 [LR 8]) and The Notion …

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

Decades of research on Roman-period hiding complexes in the Galilee have identified 85 such complexes to date. Like the hiding complexes found in Judea, they were used as places of refuge during periods of distress under Roman rule in the country. Extensive archaeological excavations conducted in the hiding complex at Khirbat Khuwweikha, near Kafr Kanna and northwest of Nazareth, have yielded impressive finds, including pottery, glassware, metal items, coins, an ostracon and bones. Such a large quantity of diagnostic finds is rare in Galilean hiding complexes, and the assemblage attests to the use of the complex by Jews during three …

Let Freedom Read: Exploring Mississippi’S Defiance Of National Book Banning Trends, Olivia S. Hoover May 2026

Let Freedom Read: Exploring Mississippi’S Defiance Of National Book Banning Trends, Olivia S. Hoover

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Why have book bans have surged so dramatically across the United States in recent years, especially as they have become a defining political project for conservative lawmakers? At the center of this uptick in book bans lies a confusing puzzle: while book bans overwhelmingly occur in Republican-dominated states, Mississippi, despite its conservative political landscape, has seen almost none, even as states like Florida have enacted more than a thousand in a single year. Much of the existing scholarship on book bans focuses on national patterns of them or on the lawmakers and advocacy groups driving these bans, leaving a gap …

Historically, Tijuana has been the destination for migrants who have been left out from the United States, Mexico, and the rest of the world. The city is at the epicenter of globalization where many transit, leave, and arrive. Sometimes considered a “third country” due to its binational and bicultural identity with its sister city, San Diego, California. The growing number of Haitian refugees that arrived in Tijuana in the mid 2010s to seek asylum in the United States overwhelmed the city’s infrastructure and left the Haitian community vulnerable, yet it created new opportunities and reshaped new identities in the region. …
