Black Rhetoric: The Art Of Thinking Being, April Leigh Kinkead
Black Rhetoric: The Art Of Thinking Being, April Leigh Kinkead
English Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the Black Hermeneutic Situation in order to uncover Black Rhetoric's possibilities for thinking Being. Martin Heidegger's phenomenological hermeneutics and his theories on thinking and Being provide the theoretical framework through which this dissertation unconceals Black Rhetoric's historical and philosophical origins in Ancient Egypt (i.e., Kemet). In order to examinine the Black Hermeneutic Situation and its saying through Black Rhetoric, this examination establishes the benefits of Heidegger's phenomenological hermeneutics to an analysis of Black Rhetoric's lineage from Kemet to the United States via the Egyptian Diaspora and the Atlantic Slave Trade. Investigating the historical and philosophical origins of …
Mapping Men: Toward A Theory Of Material Masculinity, David R. Wallace
Mapping Men: Toward A Theory Of Material Masculinity, David R. Wallace
English Dissertations - Archive
This project interrogates the possibilities of material gender theory as an interdisciplinary bridge between critical theory—like gender studies and eco–criticism—and soft–scientific men's studies. The primary theoretical argument of Mapping Men is for a re–theorizing of men's studies' social-constructionist models of masculinity in light of more contemporary critical queer and feminist theories of materiality. I assert that 19th, 20th, and 21st century American literature about rurality and masculinity highlights the unmapped, material middle–spaces (what post-structural feminist Rosi Braidotti calls the "in betweens") between socially–constructed theories of gender and the subjective, embodied experience of being male in rural places. Using an interdisciplinary …
Embodied Climate Change: Materiality, Language, Mediation, And The Legitimation Of The Unintelligible, Justin Lerberg
Embodied Climate Change: Materiality, Language, Mediation, And The Legitimation Of The Unintelligible, Justin Lerberg
English Dissertations - Archive
“Embodied Climate Change: Materiality, Language, Mediation and the Legitimation of the Unintelligible” examines the intersections of language, technology, and the human and nonhuman worlds through the example of climate change. I posit that human technology, specifically language and digital media, have codified the human and nonhuman worlds into a “mixed-reality” of virtual, actual, and potential lived experiences. These technologies have, for better or for worse, de-materialized local human embodiment and re-materialized it in the global sphere of a technological/natural-reality. The re-materialization shapes not only how humans locate themselves within the world but also how they approach and understand phenomenon like …
The Found Object(S) Of Rhetoric, Nathan Gale
The Found Object(S) Of Rhetoric, Nathan Gale
English Dissertations - Archive
The following dissertation expands the notion of posthumanism beyond the work in transhumanism, new media studies, animal studies, and material feminism by incorporating speculative realist philosophies into and with the Aristotelian concept of "faculty" or dunamis. Since Aristotle defines rhetoric as a dunamis (or potential to persuade and/or be persuaded), but also uses the term in his Physics and Metaphysics to describe the contingent potentiality found in material objects, I argue for a posthuman rhetoric that recognizes extra-symbolic forms of persuasion. Drawing from the philosophical work of Levi Bryant, Graham Harman, and Ian Bogost coupled with the rhetorical work of …
The Possibilities Of Children's Literature: A Rhetoric-Oriented Approach To Juvenile Texts, Basil Chadwick Chisholm
The Possibilities Of Children's Literature: A Rhetoric-Oriented Approach To Juvenile Texts, Basil Chadwick Chisholm
English Dissertations - Archive
This rhetoric-oriented dissertation examines the academic discussion of children's literature, especially the influence of Jacqueline Rose and her landmark book The Case of Peter Pan, or the Impossibility of Children's Fiction (1984). The implications of Rose's claim is that an entire school of interpretation within children's literature scholarship arose that began to (1) question (tacitly or overtly) whether it was possible for adult writers to really compose texts for children and (2) even suggest that the literature is something similar to a subversion and even exploitation of a child reader. This dissertation seeks to reopen the issue that Rose first …
Delights And Dangers: The Pursuit Of The Oceanic In Thelma & Louise And Lost, Christine Kyle
Delights And Dangers: The Pursuit Of The Oceanic In Thelma & Louise And Lost, Christine Kyle
English Theses - Archive
The oceanic is a sensation of unity, eternal connectedness, and oneness with the universe. The sensation can manifest itself in a variety of ways, and it is a pervasive one which has affected many people throughout the ages; however, while the desire for this sensation and evidence of its existence are vast, it often goes unnoticed. In this paper, I explore the oceanic sensation in two contemporary visual texts: the film Thelma & Louise and the television show Lost. An understanding of the oceanic contributes valuable insights into the meaning, historical significance, and popular appeal of these two works, and, in …
The Feminine Alternative: Men And Women In Modernist European Literature, Kara Nicole Purschwitz
The Feminine Alternative: Men And Women In Modernist European Literature, Kara Nicole Purschwitz
English Theses - Archive
My work examines four seminal pieces of modernist European literature: Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground, Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Gide's The Immoralist, and Woolf's Mrs. Dalloway. I show two aspects of gender representation within the characters of these novels. First, these novels follow the trend in much of canonical modernism of representing modernist traits through their male characters and pre-modern, 19th-century traits to their female characters. Second, despite this gendered representation of modernism, and at times because of it, the hegemonic gender norms for both sexes are defied.
Breaking Trauma's Empire: Trauma And Resolution In Boardwalk Empire And Breaking Bad, Lindsey Barlow
Breaking Trauma's Empire: Trauma And Resolution In Boardwalk Empire And Breaking Bad, Lindsey Barlow
English Theses - Archive
The purpose of this research is to analyze the performance of trauma and its resolutions in television, generally, and in Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad, specifically. The first chapter of this project analyzes Jacques Lacan's theory of trauma and introduces his terminology. In addition, the first chapter connects trauma's atemporality with Kenneth Burke's dramatistic pentad and explores Julia Kristeva's discussion of division and the abject. Subsequently, it analyzes the repetitiveness of trauma, its quilting point, and the emotion of abjection as the nature of trauma. The first chapter ends in a discussion of television's involvement with trauma, what television can …

Investigating The Effectiveness Of Problem-Based Learning In 3d Virtual Worlds. A Preliminary Report On The Hadrian’S Villa Project, Lee Taylor-Helms, Lynne. Kvapil, John Fillwalk, Bernard Frischer
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
This paper discusses a recent study to test the effectiveness of combining 3D virtual worlds (VWs) with Problem Based Learning (PBL) in archaeological education of undergraduate college students at two American universities. The testbed used was a virtual world of Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli (Italy), a World Heritage Site dating to the reign of Hadrian (117-138 CE). At both universities courses were offered on the villa using a PBL approach in such a way that the relative strengths and weaknesses of learning based on face-to-face, 2D, and VW presentations could be assessed. The study helped to clarify ways in which …
Perceptions Of Subversion: The Formation Of A Pop-Subculture, Kristofor R. Vogel
Perceptions Of Subversion: The Formation Of A Pop-Subculture, Kristofor R. Vogel
English Theses - Archive
This project seeks to examine the emerging cultural significance of the modern hipster and determine their contribution to the greater discourse of counter-cultural formations of subversion and identity. Hipsters are depicted as and expected to live life and form tastes using irony. They come to represent the insincerity and lack of authenticity of a group that builds its identity using material representations of previous generations. Their use of irony comes to shape how they interact with each other and with mainstream society, which surrounds them. Whether reinforcing sexism through the use of ironic rhetoric or questioning dominant culture, irony plays …
Mexico's Break Up: Mexico City's Misconceptions And Mismanagement Of Its Peripheries: Central America And Texas, 1821-1836, Kyle Carpenter
Mexico's Break Up: Mexico City's Misconceptions And Mismanagement Of Its Peripheries: Central America And Texas, 1821-1836, Kyle Carpenter
History Theses - Archive
In 1822, Mexico's boundaries held the territories of what is now Central America and Texas. Just after independence from Spain, it seemed Mexico would emerge as a powerful nation to challenge the United States in North America due to Mexico's vast lands and mineral wealth. That did not transpire. Political struggle in Mexico City and challenges from its peripheries undermined Mexico's political and economic stability. Central Americans chose to detach from Mexico in 1823 due to ideological differences based on colonial traditions, differences in the ethnic makeup of the populations of Central America and the Mexican plateau, and a shift …
Viewing The Champ-Elysses As A Transitional Space, Staci L. Swiney
Viewing The Champ-Elysses As A Transitional Space, Staci L. Swiney
History Theses - Archive
Today the Champs-Élysées serves as one of the most iconic boulevards in the world; however, in the eighteenth century the area functioned similar to a modern day park. The transitional space provided fresh air and entertainment to the citizens of Paris.Contemporary documents illustrate both the many uses of the Champs-Élysées and the Comte d'Angiviller's determination to conserve the area as a transitional space. Although ultimately Angiviller failed to preserve the Champs-Élysées, he deserves recognition, as his efforts predate the park movement by nearly sixty years.
The Walloon Immigrants Of Northeast Wisconsin: An Examination Of Ethnic Retention, Jacqueline Lee Tinkler
The Walloon Immigrants Of Northeast Wisconsin: An Examination Of Ethnic Retention, Jacqueline Lee Tinkler
History Theses - Archive
This thesis examines the unusually enduring retention of ethnic culture by the Walloon Belgian immigrants who settled in northeastern Wisconsin between 1853 and 1857, as well as the combination of circumstances which enabled this ethnic island to form and continue, well into the twenty-first century. A review of the historiography focusing on European immigrants to the United States from the post-revolutionary period to the present reveals an emphasis on urban settlement and the assumed inevitability of the weakening of ethnic identity. Less attention has been given those immigrants settling in rural areas and even less to those few rural immigrant …
In The Shade Of The Mushroom Clouds: How Christian Fudamentalists Sabotaged Atomic Scientists' Visions Of Utopia, Robert Edward Fuller
In The Shade Of The Mushroom Clouds: How Christian Fudamentalists Sabotaged Atomic Scientists' Visions Of Utopia, Robert Edward Fuller
History Theses - Archive
Prior to August 6, 1945, the end of the world had been an abstract concept left to the gods to enact via supernatural means. Yet on that day, humanity saw for the first time the actual mechanism whereby it might end the world. So it was that in the aftermath of Hiroshima, two diametrically opposed messages emerged to give Americans a framework in which to assimilate the advent of nuclear weaponry. The first, articulated by atomic scientists and other intellectuals, reasoned that the threat of nuclear annihilation meant that war must be abolished through the formation of a One World …

Inside Out: The Dialogics Of Codeswitching In Ana Castillo's So Far From God And Ibis Gómez-Vega's Send My Roots Rain, Carla L. Dye
English Theses - Archive
In the process of narration, codeswitching, the use of words from one or more language by the same speaker within the same speech situation, reflects certain resistant strategies within the written text, forging a bridge to introduce alternative or alien viewpoints. Because languages develop, change, and often merge over time, reflecting societal and political shifts, the practice of codeswitching in the novel opens new spaces for interpretation, expanding the dialogic interaction within the text. Inside Out takes Bakhtin's concepts of heteroglossia and dialogism with its centrifugal and centripetal influences, and examines Ana Castillo's novel So Far From God and Ibis …
The Heir And The Spare: Education And Preparation Among England's "Sudden Monarchs", Lindsay Ridlehuber
The Heir And The Spare: Education And Preparation Among England's "Sudden Monarchs", Lindsay Ridlehuber
History Theses - Archive
The English royal family is experiencing a recent surge of popularity. Though they no longer personally govern England, their role is still crucial within the country. The current heir to the throne, Prince Charles, is expected to inherit peacefully upon the death of Elizabeth II. However, there has been speculation that he could be passed over for his far more popular son Prince William. If this does occur, it will not be the first time that a monarch who was not the primary heir inherited the English throne. Eight times in the period between 1100 and 1701 the primary heir …
"God Help Us, We Are The Press!": Public Perception Of The Branch Davidian Conflict, Janet Rogers
"God Help Us, We Are The Press!": Public Perception Of The Branch Davidian Conflict, Janet Rogers
History Theses - Archive
Public perception of the 1993 Branch Davidian conflict, particularly as it developed well after the event, helped to alter government policy toward New Religious Movements. Prior to the investigations following the conflict, public expectations of government involvement in New Religious Movements had been shaped most dramatically by the mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana, in 1978. That event had convinced scholars and the public at large that New Religious movements had a propensity for violence, and government intervention was necessary on occasion. Thus following Jonestown, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) became involved in several standoffs with New Religious …
Community, Solitude, Patriarchy, And Proto-Feminism In The Old English Life Of St. Mary Of Egypt, Jeffrey Pawling Shipnes
Community, Solitude, Patriarchy, And Proto-Feminism In The Old English Life Of St. Mary Of Egypt, Jeffrey Pawling Shipnes
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
This thesis examines the binaries of community/solitude and patriarchy/proto-feminism in the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt. For various reasons scholars such as Hugh Magennis believe that the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt, although included in a manuscript of Aelfric's Lives of Saints, was not by Aelfric. I argue that the character of Zosimus in this vita embodies the characteristics of community and patriarchy, which I call the Aelfrician model, and the character of Mary of Egypt embodies the characteristics of solitude and proto-feminism, which I call the non-Aelfrician model. I further argue that these …

American Jewish Identity Contruction: Capturing Youth Involvement, Joseph Lincecum
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
In 1986 the founder and President of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA), Daniel Elazar, in his address to the Jewish Theological Seminary titled, The Changing Realities of the North American Jewish Community, in consideration of the integration of American Jews, wrote that it "Means more assimilation, more secularization and the acquisition of habits previously considered un-Jewish. This in turn leads to increased intermarriage as a new generation which is culturally less Jewish is at the same time more American and more easily able to find common language with non-Jewish partners of otherwise similar backgrounds". Taken that this was …

Investing In England: The Designation Of Heirs To The Crown Throughout English History, Sarah Stevenson Sadullaeva
Investing In England: The Designation Of Heirs To The Crown Throughout English History, Sarah Stevenson Sadullaeva
History Theses - Archive
It was not until the late eighteenth century that rules for succession to the English throne were written. Succession to the throne has never been random. As such, the heir to the throne plays an important part in the history of England. The heir was the personification of the future of England and signified stability, dynastic continuity and power. This study examines the designation of the heirs from the oath received by William of Normandy, which justified the conquest of 1066, to the current Prince of Wales, Charles, investiture in 1969. In reviewing the methods and reasons for designating an …

Catchin' Babies: African American Midwives, Maternity Care, And Public Health Debates In The Jim Crow South, 1920-1970, Jenny Melissa Luke
History Theses - Archive
Much of the scholarly research on African American midwifery in the Jim Crow South has been focused on the traditionally prestigious role of lay midwives, and the way in which these women were forced into obsolescence by the politically powerful medical profession. However, little has been written about the type of care they provided, or how midwifery and maternity care evolved under the increasing presence of local and federal health care structures. Using evidence from the nursing, medical, and public health journals of the era, as well as the personal memoirs of lay midwives, this study provides a new perspective …

A New System Of Power: The Franks And The Catholic Church In Post-Roman Gaul, James David Haun
History Theses - Archive
The Franks developed a new system of power in post-Roman Gaul with the help of the Catholic Church. From the sixth through the ninth century three Frankish kings played crucial roles in the development of this new system, and in the process of implementing their shared system of governance, they established the necessary conditions for the Church to make the arguments of the Investiture Controversy centuries before the actual conflict. The Investiture Controversy has been discussed and analyzed at great length by an enormous number of scholars over the decades and most argue that the proximate cause of this dispute …

From "Original Text" To "Initial Text": The Traditional Goal Of New Testament Textual Criticism In Contemporary Discussion, Michael W. Holmes

This essay focuses on this second set of issues arising out of the current discussion about the meaning and status of the term “original text.” Following a brief introduction to recent discussion, the essay will sketch usage of the term “original text” in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, assess proposals for de ning or indicating what it is that NT textual criticism is (or ought to be) attempting to recover, discuss some collateral issues associated with those proposals, and note the larger ideological context of the discussion.

As greater attention is paid to Hispanic and Tejano contributions to Southwest history, many journalists, Tejano activists, and even historians have commandeered Adina De Zavala's life and legacy as an example of Tejano leadership and accomplishment. The grand-daughter of Texas's first interim vice president, Lorenzo de Zavala, Adina dedicated her ninety-three-year life to ensuring Texas's early history would not be forgotten amidst the state's explosive commercial growth. A reverent Catholic, she devoted her efforts to the preservation of the Spanish missions and corresponding histories in and around San Antonio that pre-dated Texas independence from Mexico, with a special concentration on …
The Correspondence Theory Of Truth: The Root Cause Of Fundamentalism In America, Peyton Mclain Tune
The Correspondence Theory Of Truth: The Root Cause Of Fundamentalism In America, Peyton Mclain Tune
Philosophy & Humanities Theses - Archive
Christian fundamentalism in America is alive and well and serves as an impediment to the progress of a democratic society because of its tendency to seek universal subordination of all truth to "Biblical truth". In this paper I argue the source of strength for the resilience of this religious movement comes from their implicit adherence to the correspondence theory of truth as they apply it to their interpretation of the Bible. Furthermore, I will argue Richard Rorty's attack on the correspondence theory of truth provides a challenge to fundamentalism and reveals an alternative to fundamentalists who might join him in …
Reasoned Eclecticism In New Testament Textual Criticism, Michael W. Holmes
Reasoned Eclecticism In New Testament Textual Criticism, Michael W. Holmes
Biblical and Theological Studies Faculty Works
New Testament textual critics work with two categories of evidence, conventionally designated as “external” (provided by the manuscripts themselves, including relative age, geographic distribution, and relative weight of the witnesses) and as “internal” (dealing with scribal habits and practice, on the one hand, and authorial style and vocabulary, on the other). To do justice to both sorts of evidence, nearly all contemporary textual critics utilize a methodological approach generally known as “reasoned eclecticism.” In this approach, one fundamental guideline governs all other considerations: at any given point of variation, the variant most likely to represent the initial text is the …
