Surviving Turbulent Organizational Environments: A Case Study Examination Of A Lumber Company's Internal And External Influence Attempts, John S. Seiter

As a result of recent environmentalist attacks, environmental legislation, and a weakening economy, Southern California's Ganahl Lumber Company faces a situation which threatens its image, resources, financial viability, and survival. Using qualitative data gathering techniques (i.e., employee interviews and examinations of organizational documents), this study examines the ways in which Ganahl Lumber has responded to these concerns. Specifically, this study identifies whom Ganahl Lumber employees perceive to be their most important audiences and focuses on the different communication strategies that the com pany is using to influence these audiences. In this paper I discuss Searle's claim that the computational properties of a system could never cause a system to be conscious. In the first section of the paper I argue that Searle is correct that, even if a system both behaves in a way that is characteristic of conscious agents (like ourselves) and has a computational structure similar to those agents, one cannot be certain that that system is conscious. On the other hand, I suggest that Searle's intuition that it is “empirically absurd” that such a system could be conscious is unfounded. In the second section I show …

In the Second Analogy, Kant argues that we must presuppose, a priori, that each event is determined to occur by some preceding event in accordance with a causal law. Although there have been numerous interpretations of this argument, we have not been able to show that it is valid. In this paper, I develop my own interpretation of this argument. I borrow an insight offered by Robert Paul Wolff. In Kant's argument, our need to presuppose that the causal determination of each event rests not upon our need to impose a 'necessary' and 'irreversible' temporal order upon representations of …

It is common to see, in the Kant literature, Kant interpreted as some kind of phenomenalist. It is difficult to read through Critique of Pure Reason and not come away with the impression that Kant did not distinguish between the objects we experience and our mental representations of these objects. In many places in the Critique he makes statements such as that an object in space is "nothing but the sum these representations" (A191B236).¹ "[O]bjects are nothing but representations" (A371, also B164). Objects in space "cannot exist in themselves, but only in us" (A42/B59). But perhaps more impressive than …

Student Ethnocentrism, Dogmatism, And Motivation: A Study Of Bafa Bafa, Jon C. Bruschke, Carrier Gartner, John S. Seiter

Experiential and didactic approaches are both prevalent and potentially valuable; this study seeks to compare and contrast the methods of each. One specific simulation is examined: BAFA BAFA. This intercultural simulation is widely used and supported by educators, but few researchers have empirically tested its effectiveness. The results showed that, although BAFA BAFA did motivate students to do better in class, the simulation actually increased students' ethnocentrism in contrast to courses not using BAFA BAFA. The implications of these findings for education and future research are discussed

When Henry Somm and Alfred Jarry died in Paris in 1907, they were penniless and forgotten by all but their closest friends. However, the contrast between the life and work of these two artist/playwrights is graphically demonstrated by the conditions under which they passed away. Henry Somm, best known as a lesser-known Impressionist, was sixty-three years old when he died “of natural causes” in his atelier at 27 boulevard de Rochechouart. Alfred Jarry, friend of Picasso and a member of the avant-garde, died at thirty-four in indescribable filth within a closet-sized space between two floors in an apartment house. Since …

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the testimonies of liberal Orthodox theology in late Imperial Russia concerning the theology of Incarnation. Since it may come as a surprise to many people, even to many Orthodox, that a tradition of liberal theology existed in Russian Orthodoxy, the evidence I adduce may be of interest apart from the specific theological discussion to which it pertains.

P.F. Strawson represents a philosophical tradition in Kant scholarship. Strawson is opposed to Kant’s transcendental idealism, but he finds much of value in Kant’s metaphysical views. Strawson’s goal in The Bounds of Sense is to separate what is of value in Kant’s thought from Kant’s transcendental idealism. His dislike of transcendental idealism is based upon a certain interpretation which Henry Allison calls “the standard picture”. This picture is shared by several of Kant’s commentators, but is best exemplified in the work of Strawson and H.A. Prichard.

Putnam On 'Empirical Objects', Gorden Steinhoff

Putnam claims that the objects we experience are “mind-dependent” and “theory-dependent”. He also writes that they are “constructed within our theories”. It is difficult to say what he means by these claims. I conclude that, according to Putnam, “empirical objects” do not really exist. But I attempt to show the sense in which he can be considered a realist about these objects. Putnam has adopted an idealism which allows for the correctness of realist claims within appropriate contexts. I also discuss Putnam's solution to the problem of how we manage to refer to “empirical objects”. I argue that this solution, …
