Following the death of Robert Mapplethorpe in 1989, a group of scholars put together a retrospective exhibition of his life’s work with the help of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The subject matter, namely those in Mapplethorpe’s X and Z portfolios that included male nudes and depictions of sadomasochism, caused major controversy across the country. The presentation will cover Helms Amendment of 1990 and the obscenity trial that took place in Cincinnati in 1990 with a specific focus on the lasting impacts that these events have had on the NEA and the art world.

Since its inception in 2012, the dating app Tinder has become notorious for its hookup culture. It has also garnered much attention for instances of sexual harassment and inappropriate male behavior toward women, with the rise of Instagram pages that exploit this behavior. With an increasing number of people using this platform to meet potential partners, it is important to understand why people communicate in the ways they do. Although Montessori’s methods may not be universally accepted in common school system, her basic ideology in regards to successful childhood development which is encouraged in the classroom can be applied to any classroom environment. With the intent of improving music pedagogy and child classroom environments, the purpose of this research was to inspect Montessori’s theory and analysis here experiences that impacted her research discovery. This presentation will use punk rock culture as a context within which to address the question of how decentralized social movements can focus the energy of concerned citizens on direct action and meaningful change-making. Goals of the presentation include: addressing how do-it-yourself (DIY) punk culture is engaging in social activism as a response to social injustice; demonstrating how punk is using the arts for social engagement; and providing an example of how punk can be a form of empowerment via radical education.

Street youth in Eldoret, Kenya are at a high risk of experiencing psychological conditions like Post-traumatic Stress Disorder with contributing factors including homelessness, an unstable family structure, and exposure to alcoholism and drug abuse in parent figures. Womanist Ethics

Critical Engagement is the use of practical strategies and pedagogical methods [that] challenge dominant intellectual legacies, theological resources, and ideologies that undermine the goals of Womanist ethics, namely, the empowerment of black women. It is a concept created by Floyd Thomas, in whose writings, it is one of the five Womanist tenants. We decided to base Colin Kaepernick’s ‘take a knee’ movement as an example of Critical Engagement. Using this perspective, we examined the various aspects of the movement and analyzed the effects on American culture and society through a Womanist lens.

The American media, through movies and books, often perpetuates a romanticized image of the soldier. Each solder, endowed with exceptional fortitude, selflessness, and resilience, willingly makes sacrifices for others despite tremendous – and sometimes unbelievable— obstacles. Other times, soldiers are vilified as belonging to a corrupt institution with a secretive agenda. Despite growing interest in pilgrimage practices, scholars have argued that some changes in the traditional practice of pilgrimage are seen among modern pilgrims (Enongene & Griffin, 2017, p. 26), to include changes in the needs, expectations and purchasing behaviour of the typical faith-based visitor (Kartal et al., 2015). The East Florida Papers contain the complete local government archive of Spanish East Florida from 1784 to 1821. The St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library has dedicated its time and resources to catalog a section of the East Florida Papers titled the Assessor’s Inventory that describes a census conducted around June 1801. The Papers described houses, specifying their location, owner, price value, and more. It was my job to translate these documents from Spanish to English so that the St. Augustine Historical Society could organize the entries onto an online catalog.

Open Access texts are a way to offer content for free, but humanities assembling this type of text in the humanities is often restricted by copyright and intellectual property. Rare earth elements (REE) contain unique chemical physical properties such as lanthamum, are found in small concentrations, need extensive precise properties to separate, and are critical components of modern technologies such as laser guidance systems, personal electronics such as IPhones, satellites, and military weapons systems as varied as Virginia-class fast attack submarines, DDG-51 Aegis destroyers, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and precision guided munitions. The U.S. has some rare earth resources, but is heavily dependent on access to them from countries as varied as Afghanistan, Bolivia, and China. 今日的西貢以「香港後花園」見稱，位於新界東部的離島地區，環抱山水，景色優美，是各歐美人士和影視紅星聚居之地，亦是各行山愛好者的週末好去處。不過，有誰會想到數十年來西貢經歷了滄海桑田？西貢調景嶺曾經是國民政府遺民的聚居點，依靠港英政府的救濟；而萬宜灣則曾是數個客家聚落的鄉土，村民以耕種和捕魚維生。1970年代起，調景嶺居民的經濟改善，逐漸遷出區外居住；而萬宜水庫的興建則使西貢移山填海，舊村落從此淹沒水底。是次是講座和考察將帶領參加者回到過去，認識西貢已消逝的歷史，感受昔日山區水鄉的情懷。

En esta presentación se comparan dos procesos de reducción consonántica presentes en la norma lingüística culta que se manifiesta en la televisión de dos países: la realización de la /d/ intervocálica postónica en España, y la variación de la /s/ implosiva en la República Dominicana. El análisis revela la presencia de un caso de valoración social inversa de la relajación de los dos segmentos fonéticos analizados.
