The ever-changing education and information landscape has brought with it an increased focus on teaching pedagogy and curriculum design. In response, Latin American Studies faculty are pursuing creative pedagogical directions and approaches in areas such as digital scholarship and information literacy in partnership with librarians and archivists. This roundtable will explore faculty-librarians practice-based initiatives focusing on issues related to the Global North and South. Sometimes music speaks to you. The words and rhythm it presents translates into physical communication. The story is told in a vulnerable way that elicits how each individual in the audience can relate it to their own life. As choreographers, we enjoyed exploring our individual approaches and interpretations to the movement dynamics and how they balanced each other. At times we went for a literal translation of movement while at other times abstracted the lyrics. The Central Washington University Horn Ensemble received an invitation, based on proposal acceptance, to perform at the 2019 Northwest Horn Symposium, held March 29-31, at the University of Montana in Missoula. This symposium, hosted annually by the Northwest Horn Society, a regional professional organization that promotes the (French) horn in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and Western Canada, attracted over 120 professional players, university and school teachers, students and amateurs of all ages from throughout the region. Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl pressings. …

This study explores the experiences of women within the world of judo, a combat sport derived from ancient samurai hand-to-hand combat techniques. Although judo was founded as a sport in the 1880s, there was no women’s section until 1923 and, even then, women were barred from competition out of concern for its impact on their ability to have children. It would not be until 1992 that women’s judo became a part of the Olympic program. These limitations on women’s participation have simultaneously resulted from and contributed to the association of judo with notions of masculinity. Despite almost thirty years of …

Research shows that communication in the transition from active duty to military veteran provides several challenges. Communication on active duty is reported as clear and explicit in its hierarchic relations. Communication with civilians can at first be cryptic and only implicitly hierarchic. On active duty, a service member relies on the chain of command for medical needs. Afterwards, veterans must take initiative to ensure healthcare needs are met. Veterans communicating about employment must put military experience into terms that civilian employers understand or risk settling for less prestigious and lower paying jobs in the civilian workforce.

In the cultures of Scotland after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and the American South after the Civil War, defeatist memories and art featured prominently in mythmaking and served as a focal point for many who wished to make political statements or critiques of current realities. In Scotland, romanticism revolving around “Bonnie Prince Charlie” and the Jacobites in 1745 lessened the burden of defeat for many. For the last eight decades Rockbridge County, Virginia has served as an influential center for modern art. Neighbored by the capricious Maury River and nestled against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Rockbridge Baths significantly impacted the lives of four distinguished modern artists. Connected by ties of friendship or kin, the Rockbridge Group—Pierre Daura, Jean Hélion, Cy Twombly, and Sally Mann—drew inspiration and support from each other and from the people and places of the Rockbridge area.

In a nation firmly entrenched in the principles of white supremacy and complete separation of the races, self-determination eluded South Africans of color whose visual culture had a positive impact on important political changes during apartheid. This paper examines the works of South African artists like John Mohl, Helen Sibidi, Gavin Jantjes, Ernest Cole, and Thami Mnyele who drew inspiration from their forebears and each other and enlist the strife of individuals, as well as their own struggles, to engage the viewer in intellectual and emotive narratives.

The goal of this project is to generate a maze or cave procedurally so that a player may be able to explore infinitely without a reoccurring pattern. The project also utilizes Virtual Reality (VR); the user will be able to put on a VR Headset and become more immersed in a procedural environment. One of the challenges that needed to be overcome was simple random number generators did not generate natural looking worlds. During World War II, both the Axis and Allied powers held enemy soldiers and civilians in prisoner of war (POW) camps with little recreational activities. Although some Japanese POW camps did not allow their prisoners to engage in recreational activities, inmates transformed songs into acceptable performance practices. With the intent of improving music pedagogy, the purpose of this research was to investigate music in Japanese POW camps.
