"What's It Like Being Irish?" The Return Of The Repressed In Roddy Doyle's Paula Spencer, Jennifer Jeffers

Jennifer M. Jeffers

This is a distinctive book that examines the diversity and energy of writing in a period marked by the unparalleled global prominence of Irish culture. This collection provides a wide-ranging survey of fiction, poetry and drama over the last two decades, considering both well-established figures and also emerging writers who have received relatively little critical attention. Contributors explore the central developments within Irish culture and society that have transformed the writing and reading of identity, sexuality, history and gender. The book examines the impact of Mary Robinson's Presidency; growing cultural confidence 'back home'; legislative reform on sexual and moral issues; the …

Two Loan Repayments From Second-Century Tebtunis, James Keenan Dec 2015

Two Loan Repayments From Second-Century Tebtunis, James Keenan

James G. Keenan

The type of document commonly referred to as the repayment, or return of a loan has been recently discussed in the introduction to P. Yale 63. The editors there conclude (p. 198) that "written repayments of loans were not given for repayment itself, but to cover peculiar circumstances" (spaced by me), such as the decease of the original creditor or debtor, or occasions when repayment was made in a place different from that in which the loan was taken out. The two papyri presented below lend confirmation to this conclusion: No. 1 is the repayment in Tebtunis of a loan …

Andrew Curran, “The Anatomy Of Blackness: Science And Slavery In An Age Of Enlightenment”, Marshall Poe, Andrew Curran

Andrew Curran

We've dealt with the question of how racial categories and conceptions evolve on New Books in History before, most notably in our interview with Nell Irving Painter. She told us about the history of "Whiteness." Today we'll return to the history of racial ideas and listen to Andrew Curran explain the history of "Blackness."
