Outside The Black Box: “Found-Transformed” Czech Theatres, Michele O'Brien

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This study was designed to investigate the recent trends of non-traditional theatre spaces in the Czech Republic. By profiling four theatres, called “found-transformed” spaces for the purposes of this paper, the study‟s original aim was to draw a conclusion about the impulses for the creation and use of these spaces within the Czech context. The four spaces were: Divadlo Tramtarie in Olomouc, Moving Station in Plzen, Divadlo Těchonice in Těchonice, and Kulturní Dům Rozkrok in Varnsdorf. Methodologies employed include personal interview, observation of both the spaces and some of the work performed in the space, and research of theoretical texts …

Flamenco Y Género: ¿Amigos O Enemigos? = Gender In Flamenco: Friends Or Enemies?, Maya Hislop

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For the past few months I have attended classes of flamenco dance at a gymnasium near the Alcampo. The class is one hour long, every Tuesday and Thursday night and the name of the dance teacher is Isabel Madrid. The class usually consists of nine female students, although the number changes every now and then. The majority of the female students are older than age 40 except for myself and another exchange student from Quebec, Canada. The class serves as an excellent introduction to flamenco dance because the professor teaches three relatively easy dances every class: 1) paso doble 2) …

Relational Maintenance Strategies On Facebook, Erin M. Bryant, Jennifer Marmo

Human Communication and Theatre Faculty Research

This study explored how college students utilize the social networking site Facebook to maintain relationships. Focus group data was analyzed to develop a list of 58 Facebook relational maintenance strategies. Canary, Stafford, Hause, and Wallace’s (1993) relational maintenance typology was used to organize Facebook relational maintenance strategies. A new category was created to represent a popular relational maintenance strategy on Facebook: surveillance. This study also examined how maintenance strategies vary in different Facebook relationships; close friends, casual friends, acquaintances, romantic partners, and outsiders (e.g. parents, bosses, teachers). Participants suggested Facebook is an adequate stand-alone tool to maintain casual or acquaintance …

The Last Night Of Ballyhoo, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department Aug 2009

The Last Night Of Ballyhoo, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department

2009 Summer Theatre

The Last Night of Ballyhoo takes place in Atlanta, Georgia, in December of 1939. Gone with the Wind is having its world premiere, and Hitler is invading Poland, but Atlanta's elitist German Jews are much more concerned with who is going to Ballyhoo, the social event of the season. Events take several unexpected turns as the characters face where they come from and are forced to deal with who they really are.

Creating An Environmentally Sustainable Costume Shop, Katherine Stone Jul 2009

Creating An Environmentally Sustainable Costume Shop, Katherine Stone

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of my thesis is to provide the reader with a better understanding of how to create an environmentally sustainable costume shop. I chose to focus on certain elements of the costume shop that are imperative to the function of the shop, but desperately need to change for the sake of the environment. The elements I focused on were fabric, energy, and chemicals. Armed with a better understanding of why and what needs to be changed, the reader will be able to take this knowledge and apply it to their costume shop and life. We need to change how …

Directing Autobiographical Theatre, Shanea Taylor Jul 2009

Directing Autobiographical Theatre, Shanea Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This is an exploration of the director's role in autobiographical theatre. The director is in a unique position when storytelling on a personal level is being executed theatrically. I explored this topic over the course of directing three plays, each of which contained a strong personal storytelling element, which broadened my perspective of the director's role. The three plays were Slashtipher Coleman’s The Neon Man and Me, Birth by Karen Brody, and Will Power to Youth Richmond presents: William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Traditionally, the director’s role includes a myriad of tasks. These tasks can include and are not limited …
