2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity
For untold generations, the seafaring people of the Hawaiian Islands have looked to the horizon for a glimpse of what is to come. Kūlanihāko‘i: Living Waters is a new hula drama created by Nā Kinimakalehua, a consortium of Kumu Hula (hula masters) that blends the traditional and contemporary stories of Hawaii. Situated high in the heavens, beyond the influence of even the gods themselves, is the mystical Kūlanihāko‘i – an elemental lake from which all life flows. Through dance, chant, storytelling and dramatic interpretation, Living Waters draws from an array of enchanting Hawaiian myths tracing back over 2,000 years, highlighting …

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity
Many stories have been born from the mists of Irish mythology. None, however, can match the epic tale of St. Patrick’s encounter with Caílte and Oisín, the last of Finn mac Cumaill’s legendary band of warriors. This grand saga, the Acallam na Senórach: “An Irish Colloquy”, intertwines the ancient lore and the new religion, creating a new and lasting vision for Ireland. The tale has been adapted into an hour-long English-language music and vocal piece by composer Tarik O’Regan. Performing this regional premiere will be the incomparable National Chamber Choir of Ireland, the flagship choral ensemble of the Emerald Isle. …

2011-2012 Expose of Global Creativity
Whether it was his smash hit Shlemiel the First or his take on Brecht in UNCIVIL WARS, award-winning auteur, director and choreographer David Gordon has lived on the cutting edge of theater for the better part of 40 years. Now, Gordon returns with a re-construction of his DANCING HENRY FIVE, a twisted look at the trials and triumphs of Shakespeare’s ultimate warrior-king. Winner of a National Endowment for the Arts American Masterpieces in Dance Award, this “post-modern strike and spin” is a fun and offbeat transformation of the play you thought you knew, featuring Karen Graham, Robert La Fosse and …

Synopsis: The S. S. American is sailing between New York and England with a comically colorful assemblage of passengers: Reno Sweeney, a popular nightclub singer and former evangelist, her pal Billy Crocker, a lovelorn Wall Street broker who has come aboard to try to win the favor of his beloved Hope Harcourt (who is engaged to another passenger, Sir Evelyn Oakleigh), and a second-rate conman named Moonface Martin, aka “Public Enemy #13.” Song, dance, and farcical antics ensue as Reno and Moonface try to …

The Barzakh Of Flamenco: Tracing The Spirituality, Locality And Musicality Of Flamenco From South Of The Strait Of Gibraltar, Tania Flores

Flamenco performance – which scholars often describe in terms of the three dimensions of cante, or singing, baile, or dance, and toque, or instrumentation – is a complex synthesis of cultural influences across several centuries. In discussing the evolution of flamenco, scholars typically begin with the history of the gitanos, the subgroup of the Romani or Gypsy people that settled in Spain. Drawing upon a large body of ethnographic, historic and scientific evidence, scholars agree that the gitanos originated in the northwestern regions of contemporary India and
Pakistan – specifically, Rajasthan and the Punjab region (Iovita 275; …

Since the 1970s, various groups of “oppressed” people have appropriated performance theater, a space that has historically oppressed and excluded everyone outside of the elite ruling class, and have employed it as a social tool. In Nicaragua, as popular theater groups emerged critiquing the government and other institutions, a feminist theater emerged as well during the 1980s in different parts of the country. In this essay, I will examine Nicaraguan feminist theater, its development and its methodology. Simultaneously part of a women’s movement, feminist movement, and a popular theater movement, the Nicaraguan women’s theater proposes a three phase process: concientización, …
