2012-2013 Exceptions Rule: No Compromise

A new chamber opera based on the life of renowned African-American artist Clementine Hunter, Zinnias is an intimate exploration of one of America’s greatest natural talents. Born on a plantation in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Hunter’s experiences revealed an innate talent for depicting life in the early 20th century through her paintings. Now, using her artwork and stories, Clementine Hunter’s touching and unique journey is brought to the stage through the collaboration of Robert Wilson, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Toshi Reagon and Jacqueline Woodson.

"The Invisible Foot" By Steve Taylor, Lee Devin Jan 2013

"The Invisible Foot" By Steve Taylor, Lee Devin

Theater Faculty Works

The Invisible Foot is wonderful! Very smart, dialogue I can hear in my mind’s ear, great ideas clearly and poetically presented. Growth as an addictive drug: outstanding. It is not, strictly speaking, a script to make into a play. It’s a Platonic Dialogue. And a damned good one.

The Commercial & Artistic Viability Of The Fringe Movement, Charles Garrison Jan 2013

The Commercial & Artistic Viability Of The Fringe Movement, Charles Garrison

Theses and Dissertations

This investigation compares and contrasts an established theatrical festival (The Edinburgh Fringe Festival) with two relatively new American festivals (The Cincinnati Fringe Festival and The New York City Fringe Festival) to determine the commercial and artistic viability of those particular fringe festivals and any commonality with the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Each festival displayed four primary struggles on the ongoing path towards commercial and artistic viability: the involvement and development of locally-developed, internal theatre companies versus the invitation and involvement of external theatrical companies from other cities; the decisions determining if and how productions are selected or filtered for the festivals; …

The “Carousel Effect” In Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills, Stephen M. Croucher Jan 2013

The “Carousel Effect” In Forensic Research, Daniel Cronn-Mills, Stephen M. Croucher

National Forensic Journal

Our purpose is to determine if an anecdotal pattern we have seen emerging at the National Communication Association (NCA) conference holds true. We have noticed that forensic panels at NCA, and specifically individual events (IE) panels, appear to revolve around similar themes. Scholars interested in IE issues may be repeating themselves. The result is a “carousel effect”: the papers/panels go round‘n‘round the same ideas. Our analysis identified two findings: (1) 25 research themes are evident in forensics and three themes comprise the focus of most of the research; (2) qualitative analysis showed repetition among the titles of forensic research. We …

Antidosis For A Forensics Life: An Isocratic Defense Of Modern Practices Of Competitive Forensics, Aaron Duncan Jan 2013

Antidosis For A Forensics Life: An Isocratic Defense Of Modern Practices Of Competitive Forensics, Aaron Duncan

National Forensic Journal

The forensics community is under attack from inside and outside the coaching profession. It is important that we as coaches defend our practices and justify the value of the activity. Despite his prominence in his own time and his influence over the development of rhetoric, the work of Isocrates has not been utilized to craft a defense of forensics. Similar to the situation we face today, Isocrates also had to defend his practices as a teacher of rhetoric. Using his works Antidosis and Against the Sophist, I attempt to craft a defense for the practices of the modern forensics community.

Speaking Franco: Francisco Franco And The Evolution Of Spanish Artistic Voice, Kathryn Lea Jan 2013

Speaking Franco: Francisco Franco And The Evolution Of Spanish Artistic Voice, Kathryn Lea

The Corinthian

Throughout history and across the globe examples of political regimes’ ability to control and shape the artistic canon of their peoples abound. Fascist regimes across the world have demonstrated the power of the state to influence and manipulate the public consciousness through art, and perhaps nowhere was this phenomenon more profoundly felt than in twentieth century Europe as Spain struggled under the dictatorial oppression of Francisco Franco.

The Feminine Peter Pan, Felicia Jones Jan 2013

The Feminine Peter Pan, Felicia Jones

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

Cross-casting in performances has effected outrage and social dilemmas in audiences, despite the important cultural messages those characters display. Since its beginning as a play, women have been cast as the young boy Peter in Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie wrote Peter Pan through inspiration from the young deaths of his brother and childhood friend, who will always remain in their youth. In order to capture that youthful innocence, females have been cast as Peter. This choice in casting was also made to achieve androgyny and transcend gender by blurring gender lines.
