Subjectivity In 'Attār's Shaykh Of San'Ān Story In The Conference Of The Birds, Claudia Yaghoobi

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Subjectivity in 'Attār’s Shaykh of San'ān Story in The Conference of the Birds" Claudia Yaghoobi discusses intersections of transgression, law, inclusion and exclusion, self and Other in Farīd al-Dīn 'Attār's (1142?-ca.1220) treatment of religion with regard to Shaykh San'ān and the Christian girl's love story in The Conference of the Birds. San'ān is an ascetic master who has never transgressed any of the Islamic laws until he embarks on a journey from Mecca to Rome after a dream only to fall in love with a Christian girl, convert to Christianity, and begin drinking wine and …

Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín Mar 2014

Intertextuality In Beckett's And Ağaoğlu's Work, Elmas Şahín

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Intertextuality in Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's Work" Elmas Şahín discusses Adalet Ağaoğlu's 1973 novel Ölmeye Yatmak (Lying Down to Die) and Samuel Beckett's 1950 Malone Dies in terms of intertextuality. Şahín employs tenets of comparative literature in order to analyze the two texts with regard to form and content and focuses on the on protagonists' worlds. In Şahín's interpretation, Ağaoğlu's protagonist Aysel is narrated in postmodern intertextuality as an individual of our days alienated from society, searching for her self/selves as she cannot succeed in dying. Both Beckett's and Ağaoğlu's protagonists attempt to "escape" from their selves and …

History And Identity In Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing In Romanian, Nicoleta D. Ifrim Mar 2014

History And Identity In Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing In Romanian, Nicoleta D. Ifrim

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "History and Identity in Post-Totalitarian Memoir Writing in Romanian" Nicoleta D. Ifrim analyzes Virgil Tănase's confessional and ego-graphic writing in his 2011 Leapșa pe murite (Playing Fetch with Death). Tănase's text is about the individual caught in history and re-writes it post-traumatically from a double perspective: that of the collective memory of totalitarianism and the personal thus functioning as a filtering mechanism for the creation of meta-historical identity. For Tănase, the experience of exile and post-exile, as well as the confrontation with the West legitimizes identity dilemmas and the construction of the individual. The book is representative …

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia Mar 2014

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry. The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by what the authors …

“Everything Teeming With Life”: A Critical Examination Of Thomas Eccleshare’S Pastoral, Leah Vitello Mar 2014

“Everything Teeming With Life”: A Critical Examination Of Thomas Eccleshare’S Pastoral, Leah Vitello

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

Unlike most apocalyptic stories, Thomas Eccleshare’s play, Pastoral, flips the genre on its head with its original take on what could come of the relationship between humans and nature. Throughout the course of the play, readers follow along as an elderly woman, Moll, and her companions attempt to make sense of their new ecologically lavish environment. Rather than humankind dominating nature, Eccleshare posits the question of what could happen if nature dominated over man. Pastoral is a play in which the countryside has become intrepidly abundant; however, rather than providing for humankind, nature attacks it. Set near a shopping center …

The Catalan Theatre Scene. A Story Of Survival, Sharon G. Feldman Feb 2014

The Catalan Theatre Scene. A Story Of Survival, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The past four decades have been an exciting time for the Catalan stage. Barcelona has come into its own as a vibrant international theatre capital, and theatrical offerings in Catalonia are richer and more diverse than ever before. The process of recuperation, relegitimization and institutionalization of Catalan theatrical life that began during the period of transition from dictatorship to democracy has reached an impressive state of fruition and maturity. The situation is all the more astonishing when viewed in light of an historical context replete with political and economic constraints that have threatened to overwhelm and submerge, time and again, …

Who Am I? Identification And Ideology Within Multimedia Games, Brian Hochhalter, April Haws Feb 2014

Who Am I? Identification And Ideology Within Multimedia Games, Brian Hochhalter, April Haws

Journal of Undergraduate Research

John Steinbeck noted in Travels With Charley that “A journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it.”

So I have found in my research efforts. I originally embarked on a journey to investigate narrative cinema techniques that have been adopted by multimedia games, determine which of these techniques effectively engaged players, which don’t, and report my findings. Specifically, given the use of cinematic techniques in recent games, I sought to use theories of how films affect spectators to guide my investigation. As I have come to know the subject more deeply I …

Developing Film Processes, Ryan Little, Tom Lefler Feb 2014

Developing Film Processes, Ryan Little, Tom Lefler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As a student of cinematography I have focused most of my studies on “Sensitometry,” the science of measuring the response of photographic emulsions to light. The way in which a film is exposed, processed and viewed can affect the degree to which the film=s sensito-metric and image structure potential is realized. Knowing what a film is designed to do is an absolute necessity for any serious cinematographer.

Creating A Pre-Inventive Film, David Paul Graham, Tom Lefler Feb 2014

Creating A Pre-Inventive Film, David Paul Graham, Tom Lefler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Traditionally, narrative films begin with a story to be told and every decision made in the film making process should take into account what would best in order to tell that story. I proposed to create a narrative film a very different way. I thought it should be possible to create a pre-inventive film where the pieces of the film exist before inventing the story.

Behold Your Little Ones: A Senior Project In Dance, Raquelle Madsen Feb 2014

Behold Your Little Ones: A Senior Project In Dance, Raquelle Madsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My assignment was to create a dance at least ten minutes in length. I decided to use this assignment as a way to inform people about the effects of child abuse. Because dance is abstract it can be used to combat things that are hard to face. I chose this topic because I have seen the effects of abuse on children and have had friends that were abused as children. Their lives can never be “normal.” By creating this dance I could help in the fight against abuse by showing people in Utah that child abuse is even common here. …

There Used To Be A Ballpark ••• A Portrait Of Derks Field, Brady Tuckett Feb 2014

There Used To Be A Ballpark ••• A Portrait Of Derks Field, Brady Tuckett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In early 1992, it was announced that Salt Lake City’s minor league ballpark, Derks Field, was going to be tom down. Soon after reading these headlines, I became interested in making a documentary about the history of baseball in Salt Lake City. As a child, I attended many baseball games in Derks Field with my grandfather, to whom I have dedicated this documentary.

8 Minutes At 325°, Todd Wahlquist

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The making of a film can be very taxing, both mentally and financially, and I appreciate very much the Office of Research and Creative Work helping to lessen both of those demands. The total budget for my film was approximately $5,000; therefore, the $1,000 provided by the Research and Creative Work Office was a significant factor in my being able to complete the final stages of post-production this past spring.

Awa Yio … (We Are Glad), Melanie Morrow Feb 2014

Awa Yio … (We Are Glad), Melanie Morrow

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The final product was everything I had hoped it to be! The piece was 10 minutes in length with two sections and was performed March 31st andAprillst, 1994. It involved approximately 60 past or present members of the BYU’s Men’s Chorus using only live percussion and voices. There were eight dancers, including myself. The lighting and visual effects completed the image of what I envisioned for the piece, with slight deviations from the original proposal. All in all, it seemed to be an edifying experience for those involved.

Progress Report On My Project Entitled “The Effects Of Editing On Emotion And Theme”, Merrill A. Page, Stan Ferguson Feb 2014

Progress Report On My Project Entitled “The Effects Of Editing On Emotion And Theme”, Merrill A. Page, Stan Ferguson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Editing in film is the act of joining two separate visual clips together to continue a film’s progress. Editing styles and the frequency of cuts can vary greatly from film to film, and in my project, I proposed to study in depth the actual effects that could be achieved solely by editing. The plan was to film a certain scene from a script, and then edit it in several different ways to see the things that could be accomplished through the editing alone.

Stardust, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University Feb 2014

Stardust, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2013-2014 Raise the Bar

Stardust explores the evolving nature of intimacy in our technology-driven, furiously-paced world. Redefining the coming-of-age story for the electronic age, the evening-length piece follows an African American gay urban teenager who is present only by the emotionally laden tweets and text messages he sends. Dance, multimedia, and the music of Nat King Cole and d. Sabela Grimes combine to form an intensely personal journey of self-discovery.
