Creative Arts Therapies Theses
The purpose of this research was to unite Palestinian and Israeli children who are living in war conflict through movement. This research took place at a kibbutz in Israel, where I worked with an interfaith peace education organization whose mission was to motivate understanding, tolerance, and respect among Israeli and Palestinian children. Using a methodology rooted in performance ethnography, I studied the culture of 11 children in the camp as they engaged in four movement sessions. The focus of each session was to enhance their social and team building skills. Using the experience from the sessions, I facilitated the development …

La Mentalidad Rupturista De Alfonso Vallejo Durante La Transición Política Española (1975-1982): Análisis De Su Obra Cangrejos De Pared, José Leonardo Ontiveros G.
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
A Qualitative Study Of Nursing Living-Learning Communities, Renee Noel Bauer
A Qualitative Study Of Nursing Living-Learning Communities, Renee Noel Bauer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Living-learning communities, although not a novel concept, have been known to promote student performance and a sense of collegiality. Because nursing is essential to the medical profession, nursing student retention and pass rates are of paramount importance. Attrition tends to happen to nursing students in their first formative years (Newton & Moore, 2009). Therefore, this study was conducted to explore findings associated with living arrangements and residential factors promoting and deterring retention. Although most studies on this topic have utilized quantitative methods, this qualitative comparative case study, involving two universities in Indiana during the winter of 2014, examined the personal …
Student Directing Thesis: Directing A Main Stage Show, Brock J. Cooley Mr.
Student Directing Thesis: Directing A Main Stage Show, Brock J. Cooley Mr.
Undergraduate Honors Theses
My thesis gives insight on directing a main stage production at the collegiate level as a student. Specifically directing Tradin’ Paint, an original piece from playwright Catherine Bush a native of Abingdon Virginia, and a company playwright for the Barter Theatre. In the thesis I discuss how I arrived at different conclusions for my show through different research. I discuss the experience of being a director over professors, and my own peers, and how all of these challenges and discoveries eventually gave me a finished product to be proud of. If a director were to look at this work, they …
Aerial Arial : A Lesson In Strength And Stamina., Ashley Elizabeth Smith
Aerial Arial : A Lesson In Strength And Stamina., Ashley Elizabeth Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis serves to argue the importance of skills related to strength and stamina in the field of theatre performance, particularly in regards to engaging young audiences by applying physical spectacle to classical theatre works. This thesis explores the physical theatre theories of Tadashi Suzuki, Mary Overlie, Rudolf Laban, and the theatrical style of Commedia dell’Arte as applied to my role as Ariel in The Tempest. It also reflects on the use of aerial silks in the same Shakespearean production, serving to prove that the skills required for such a strenuous physical activity are useful for actors as they attempt …

The Tempest Defending Prospera : The Ideation Of Spiritual Lineage And Practice In Performance For An Afro-Haitian American Actor., Iva-Kristi Maria Papailler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Imagine: William Shakespeare’s final hero, Prospero and all of his beautiful and majestic White, Italian maleness played by an Afro-Haitian American actress. Something changes. No longer does the audience see a traditional view of the character onstage. The audience sees a woman of African descent delivering lines written for a man of European descent. They may or may not question what they are seeing: certainly, I the actor, must. My Blackness brings an ancestral line to the production that makes a variety of traditional African religions part of Prospera’s spiritual lineage. My Blackness and gender also imbue Prospera with a …

Walking To My Death : An Actor's Journey., David Elliot Galloway 1987-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the fall of 2011, I began a course of graduate theatrical training at the University of Louisville. Over my three years of study, I have developed a process for the creation of a well-rounded and emotionally interesting character. I call my process three-dimensional acting. This process is composed of: a keen and in-depth study of and adherence to the text, careful and thorough voice work, and well-rehearsed and executed physicality. This study shows, through its application to the character of Matthew Poncelet, in Dead Man Walking, that my process is succeeds in creating a character of emotional complexity that …

Bat Boy: The Musical, Sarah Carlson Cassell
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
When I began the process of producing my Capstone Project, Bat Boy: the Musical, I had no idea what I was about to do or how much work it was going to be. I ultimately learned that the key tools I needed were passion, confidence, and creativity.
I originally had a very difficult time deciding what show I wanted to do. I changed my mind several times between other shows, but once I landed on Bat Boy I never second-guessed my choice. I found a show I was passionate about, and subsequently poured myself into every second I spent …

Setting The Stage For A Sober Community On Campus, John Delisa
Setting The Stage For A Sober Community On Campus, John Delisa
HIM 1990-2015
In the last thirty years, a movement in America helps students struggling with substance abuse and dependency. Only recently, in the 1970s to be precise, has there been any significant documentation that unveils the problem of substance abuse in college. Schools like Texas Tech University and Kennesaw State University are in the forefront helping hundreds of thousands of students who struggle to have a safe and productive college experience. These schools provide support systems, scholarships, and mentorship to those students who are free from drug use and dependence and are looking to further their education. It is my intent to …
African-American Men And A Journey Through Musical Theatre And Opera, Shonn Mccloud
African-American Men And A Journey Through Musical Theatre And Opera, Shonn Mccloud
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of this study is to outline the origins of African-American men in musical theatre, uncover their contributions to the art form, and explore how their legacy is continued today. I was inspired to do this research because through my undergraduate curriculum I have only narrowly studied African-American men in musical theatre and opera history. Upon realizing the lack of attention to this subject matter, not only in my curriculum but in historical resources, I was inspired to address the need for this research. The courses I have taken included Theatre History 1 and 2 and Musical Theatre History …
Ten-Minute Playwriting: A Study Of Design, Method, And Structure, Jeffrey Peacock
Ten-Minute Playwriting: A Study Of Design, Method, And Structure, Jeffrey Peacock
HIM 1990-2015
The purpose of my research was to discover the most effective ways to write ten-minute plays. I adapted various "suggestions" proposed in the many playwriting books I gathered to find the way that worked best for me as an artist. The majority of the books I read suggest writing ten-minute works before attempting a one-act or even a full-length play. My resources yielded a plethora of information on how to actually write a play. Three of my sources that proved to be enlightening were The Art and Craft of Playwriting by Jeffrey Hatcher, Playwriting for Dummies by Angelo Parra, and …
The Use Of Foley In Live Theatre As Demonstrated Through Theatre Ucf's Production Of Shipwrecked! An Entertainment - The Amazing Adventures Of Louis De Rougemont (As Told By Himself), Anthony Narciso
HIM 1990-2015
Foley, a term named after Universal Studios sound pioneer Jack Foley, is an allencompassing word for the creation of sound effects with materials that can emulate the sound of real world occurrences. While it is used heavily in the film and television world, Foley does not see much direct use in live theatrical performances. The widespread availability and use of prerecorded sound effects has altered the field of theatrical sound design. With thousands of audio files at a designer’s disposal, the need to create custom sounds is reduced. However, certain scripts do call for the use of live Foley. While …
The Oppression And Sexism Of African-American Women: Then And Now: Substantial Contributions To The History Of Musical Theatre, Kelli Owens
HIM 1990-2015
A wise Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Freedom is never given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed (King 1)." For as long as men and women have shared the planet, sexism has been a universal issue in civilization. In a social justice context, American society has found ways to oppress people for centuries. The Oxford Dictionary defines sexism as a "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex ("sexism")." Voting rights in America were established in 1790, but it took years of petitioning at various women's rights conventions before the Nineteenth …

The intent of this thesis is to study a variety of vocal techniques and identify how to solve different vocal challenges in the musical theatre song, "The Girl in 14G." In order to be successful in the entertainment business, it is imperative that a singer performs healthily and in a variety of music styles. Through an exploration of Lessac Kinesensic Training, Estill Voice Training Systems and Bel Canto techniques, a singer can gain a holistic perspective about voice. I will study with three voice teachers, each of whom specializes in one of the aforementioned techniques. This thesis will reveal how …

Undergraduate Honors Theses
My Year as a Choreographer analyzes the art and craft of dance choreography. My training as a theatre and dance student at East Tennessee State University from 2010-2014, culminated in my final senior capstone experience as a choreographer for two productions, the ETSU Division of Theatre and Dance’s 2014 Dance Concert and University School’s musical, Sleepy Hollow. Composing a new dance in a concert setting and choreographing for musical theatre provided significant material for analysis, and the following research compares the two processes. In addition, the research of the history and development of dance choreography and its modern practices …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Most people do not realize that Technical Theatre even exists, and of those who do, not many realize the great potential that Technical Theatre programs have for reforming education. Through an examination of the basic history of education in the United States, as well as of the current trends in student preparation for careers and the workforce, it is clear that Technical Theatre offers an educational model that addresses many of the difficulties experienced in today's educational systems. By integrating the core subjects with hands-on learning, technical skills, 21st century soft skills, and both learner-centered and group-learning methodologies, Technical Theatre …

La Pervivencia De La Tragedia Y Sus Ecos En El Teatro Mexicano: Las Adoraciones De Juan Tovar, Claudia Gidi
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies
