The Three Year Clock, Sam Roeck
The Three Year Clock, Sam Roeck
Theses and Dissertations
Roeck: I mean, it’s “a” future. It’s like half what I want to be and half completely not what I want. I didn’t want to create a future that I was entirely excited about because I’m not actually that excited about the future. It looks pretty fucking grim.

Theatre And Leadership, The Perfect Marriage, Samantha Schlernitzauer, Jocelyn Buckner
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
As my four years at university are ending, I begin to critically think about my choice of study and ask, “did I make the right decision?” I am choosing to not go into my field which I spent the last four years studying, devoting my time to, and learning about and instead pursue my new-found passion for leadership. Many times when I explain my decision I am met with the follow up question of “why study theatre,” especially if one is not going into acting or directing.
This question of “why study theatre” often leads me to question and analytically …

Females And Footnotes: Excavating The Genre Of Eighteenth-Century Women’S Scholarly Verse, Ruth Knezevich
Females And Footnotes: Excavating The Genre Of Eighteenth-Century Women’S Scholarly Verse, Ruth Knezevich
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640–1830
Throughout the eighteenth century, the genre of women’s poetry heavily annotated with editorializing commentary (a genre I term “scholarly verse”) became increasingly prevalent. Such poetry presents an ironic reversal of conventions of gender and authority by incorporating the literal margins of the page: the female voice commands the majority of the page, while the masculine voice of empiricism, authority, and scholarly reason is pushed to the margins. This essay offers a distant reading of the range of annotations women poets provided, in order to begin new conversations about the ways women’s poetry served as a site of and structure for …

Theatre In Prison: How It Is Making A Difference, Mackenzee Donham
Theatre In Prison: How It Is Making A Difference, Mackenzee Donham
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
The United States of America incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country in the world. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics Department, there are over two million people incarcerated in American prisons, and according to the National Institute of Justice, 76% of prisoners reoffend within five years of being released. Historically, one of the primary purposes of prisons is to prepare the inmates for their eventual release, a process known as rehabilitation. In the criminal justice world, rehabilitation is intended to smooth reintegration into society, and provide skills and incentives to prevent future criminal activity. However, looking …
The Business Of Theatre: How Creativity, Collaboration, And Communication Infiltrate 'The Real World', Caroline Hale
The Business Of Theatre: How Creativity, Collaboration, And Communication Infiltrate 'The Real World', Caroline Hale
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Too often ridiculed as a “dying art”, theatre endures a ceaseless struggle for validity among educators, employers, and citizens alike. However, the skills garnered by performers, technicians, and designers through theatrical education span far beyond the final curtain, and are significantly more relevant and impactful than we think.
A theatre education means learning about the human condition, communication, gaining self-confidence, expressing creativity, problem solving, and thinking on your feet. In addition, drama techniques have been enormously effective in improving self-esteem and building community. A theatre education is a highly successful catalyst for the development of a “soft skill set.” Because …

The Authentic Workplace: Theatrical Practices In The Corporate World, Katherine Dumas
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
"We are beginning to bring our whole selves to work… That type of separation probably never existed… Instead of putting on some kind of fake “all-work persona,” I think we benefit from expressing our truth, talking about personal situations, and acknowledging that professional decisions are emotionally driven."(1) In her award-winning 2013 book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, Sheryl Sandberg explains the movement in the corporate world to look for emotional intelligence in potential employees before they are hired. Qualities such as this are nurtured and practiced regularly in the world of theatre, as evidenced by the …

Beyond The Stage: The Influence Of Theatre In Walt Disney Imagineering, Cassaundra Soumas
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Walt Disney Imagineering is the head design team behind Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Their experts and creators spearhead all projects, from shows and attractions to architecture and locations. Their groundbreaking work has put them at the forefront of the Themed Entertainment Industry. While they have become trendsetters in the world of entertainment, much of their foundation is still based in the world of theatre. Through this thesis, I will examine just how much of an influence theatre has had in the foundation of Walt Disney Imagineering. From simple verbiage to designs, theatre is present in many levels. I will …
An Open Call For The Close-Minded: Remedying The Impossible Body Image Standard For Women In The Entertainment Industry With An Emphasis On Weightism, Ellen Beizer
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Throughout the history of the entertainment industry, female performers have been subjected to an impossible standard with regards to body image and outward appearance. Many women actors find themselves forced to endure rigorous dieting and exercise, painful processes of beautification, and even reconstructive surgery in an effort to achieve and maintain—what the industry perceives to be—the ideal feminine form. Appearance is so intricately ingrained within the industry that often women who possess remarkable talent are passed over for work in favor of the candidate with the smaller waistline or bigger breasts. This superficiality is poisonous to our culture, and to …

Rivalry In Toyer: The Impact Of The Male Gaze And The Final Girl On Theatrical Conflict, Sento Ashby
Liberal Arts Capstones
Although much progress has been made in recent years, traditional gender roles still permeate society. This project investigated gender constructs in relation to choreographed violence and found that females are often victims unless they adopt masculine survival styles, while males are usually aggressors – particularly towards females. Analysis of the characters in the play Toyer by Gardner McKay supported this conclusion.

The We In Me: Exploring The Interconnection Of Indigenous Dance, Identity And Spirituality, Sara Moncada
The We In Me: Exploring The Interconnection Of Indigenous Dance, Identity And Spirituality, Sara Moncada
Senior Theses
An extensive amount of scholarship exists today on Native American and Indigenous people within the realm of music and dance ethnography. Over the centuries research and observations have used these stunning and profound creative expressions as a means by which to document and theorize about the people, their histories, traditions, and ways of being. However, a tremendous amount of this scholarship is developed from specific forms and styles of expression, resulting in a kind of separation that arises from examining an individual dance or song tradition as a stand-alone inquiry. By dislocating individual forms from the overarching whole, we limit …
The Nature Of God: Perceptions Of God With Exposure To Nature And Natural Events, Holly Ann Kolberg
The Nature Of God: Perceptions Of God With Exposure To Nature And Natural Events, Holly Ann Kolberg
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research studies have shown that the sense of awe evoked by natural settings may be associated with transcendental thinking about God. Similarly, other researchers have suggested that people attribute events to God when they cannot develop a sufficient naturalistic explanation for a phenomenon. People appear to prefer attributing events to a benevolent God but will modify their beliefs to assume that God is punitive if event outcomes do not appear to favor their well-being or religious attributions do not accommodate a situation. In the current study, the goal was to evaluate how exposure to photographs of different environments influenced beliefs …

Shavian Ethic As Evidenced In Four Major Plays, Carol E. Auterson
Shavian Ethic As Evidenced In Four Major Plays, Carol E. Auterson
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not George Bernard Shaw reflects in his work any sort of moral ethic - a clearly delineated sense of right and wrong - and, if so, what it is and is not. His method, which is classically known as Shavian Method, is the vehicle employed in his stagecraft to achieve the objective of removing obstacles that prevent him from influencing the ethical opinions of others. In his plays, Shaw creates situations that highlight and over-exaggerate particular issues in the Victorian era such as poverty, prostitution, and religious piety. Shaw's plays …

INTIMATE APPAREL by Lynn Nottage
Directed by Dr. Jaye Austin Williams
Drama: In this brilliantly crafted portrait of turn-of-the-last-century New York, Nottage gives us a story about desire and common sense, of pleasure and pain, of resilience and fragility, and above all the unlikely triumph of the human spirit. True to its title, Intimate Apparel presents a story that is both delicate and eloquent. Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle Awards and Sternberg New Play Award.

Efficient Strategies For Playing The Horn, Jon Allan Holloway
Efficient Strategies For Playing The Horn, Jon Allan Holloway
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In their pursuit of becoming accomplished performers, horn players spend a great deal of time studying proper brass playing techniques from the great pedagogues. The modern horn is a fairly young instrument (less than two hundred years old) and the most efficient pedagogical approach is still evolving. Because of this, horn players spend a great deal of time studying proper brass playing techniques from the great pedagogues. Books by Philip Farkas, Arnold Jacobs, Raphael Mendez, and more have many theories and exercises on how to breathe, the best way to perfect embouchure development, performance techniques, and more.
Modern pedagogues have …
Staging Famine Irish Memories Of Migration And National Performance In Ireland And Québec, Jason King
Staging Famine Irish Memories Of Migration And National Performance In Ireland And Québec, Jason King
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In "Staging Famine Irish Memories of Migration and National Performance in Ireland and Québec" Jason King examines recent community theater productions about the Irish Famine migration to Québec in 1847. King explores community-based and national ideas of performance and the role of remembrance in shaping and transmitting the diasporic identities of Québec's Irish cultural minority. While most of the plays re-enact French-Canadian adoptions of Famine orphans as spectacles of Irish integration in Québec, David Fennario's Joe Beef: (A History of Pointe Saint Charles) (1984, published 1991) rehearses the history of the Canadian/Québec nation in terms of recurrent labor exploitation epitomized …
Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider
Young People's Literature Of Algerian Immigration In France, Anne Schneider
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In her article "Young People's Literature of Algerian Immigration in France" Anne Schneider discusses questions of language, hybridity, and heritage in some works for young people published in France about Algeria and/or Algerian-French identity, by Leïla Sebbar, Jean-Paul Nozière, Azouz Begag, and Michel Piquemal. She argues for the need for an intercultural education at primary school that uses literature about immigration to highlight questions of place, belonging, exile and language. Schneider's focus is on Begag's Un train pour chez nous (2001) and Piquemal's Mon miel, ma douceur (2004). These texts use linguistic hybridity and an emphasis on common human experiences …
