La Adaptación Y El Cine Teatralizado: Ordet De Kaj Munk Y Carl Theodor Dreyer, Miguel Olea Romacho Jan 2019

La Adaptación Y El Cine Teatralizado: Ordet De Kaj Munk Y Carl Theodor Dreyer, Miguel Olea Romacho

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Teatro Del Oprimido, Nozad Heshmat Kasem Jan 2019

Teatro Del Oprimido, Nozad Heshmat Kasem

Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Black Star, Other Fetishized: Carlos Acosta, Ballet’S New Cosmopolitanism, And Desire In The Age Of Institutional Diversity, Lester Tomé Jan 2019

Black Star, Other Fetishized: Carlos Acosta, Ballet’S New Cosmopolitanism, And Desire In The Age Of Institutional Diversity, Lester Tomé

Dance: Faculty Publications

Focusing on Carlos Acosta, the Cuban performer who became the first black principal dancer of London’s Royal Ballet, this chapter proposes that a new cosmopolitanism characterizes contemporary ballet. Such cosmopolitanism, informed by the institutionalization of diversity, is achieved through the presence of Latin American and Asian dancers in European and North American companies. Inclusion of the subaltern lends these institutions an image of multiculturalism and globality that increases their social capital. Yet, ballet’s new cosmopolitanism impels subaltern dancers to negotiate the fraught politics of moving from the periphery to the center, where they find themselves both valued and devalued for …

Myrrha Now: Reimagining Classic Myth And Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses In The #Metoo Era, Claire A. Pukszta Jan 2019

Myrrha Now: Reimagining Classic Myth And Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses In The #Metoo Era, Claire A. Pukszta

Scripps Senior Theses

This paper represents the final culmination of a theater senior project. The project consisted of an analytical research paper, performance in a mainstage department production, and supporting process documentation. I portrayed Myrrha, Hunger, Zeus, and others in a production of the play Metamorphoses.

Through research on Mary Zimmerman’s 1998 play Metamorphoses, adapted from the works of Roman poet Ovid, this thesis grapples with the historical meaning of the myth of Myrrha. A polarizing figure, Myrrha was cursed to fall in lust with her father. By exploring of portrayals sexual assault onstage, I tackle themes of audience relationships to …

Where Do We Go From Here? A Semi-Autobiographical Performance Exploration Into The Therapeutic Benefits Of Theatre, Emma Elliott Jan 2019

Where Do We Go From Here? A Semi-Autobiographical Performance Exploration Into The Therapeutic Benefits Of Theatre, Emma Elliott

Scripps Senior Theses

My intention in this performance is to create a therapeutic theatrical process for myself and engage the audience with intense emotional vulnerability regarding the combination and validation of the nobody and performative self. I utilized both my vocal and acting training to work through emotional trauma that I have experienced and created a musical performance to demonstrate my journey of therapy and emotional reconciliation within myself and my family. I focused my research on using autobiographical performances to solidify and validate the identity of the performer to an audience. In doing so, this allows the performers to become the …

Best Practices To Promote Racial Unity In Theatre, Cassandra Epps

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I will be presenting a variety of practices that I believe will promote racial unity in theatre. I have included lesson plans and games that will help instructors create an open environment for students of all races. I will present research from theatre experts to conclude my best practices to create a more unified ensemble and culturally diverse curriculum in my theatre program, as well as present a list of activities, lesson plans, and production methods for directors and teachers to consider implementing. We as instructors must look critically at ourselves and our world view to begin …

A Mother Honors College Alternative To The Thesis, Amanda L. Ellenburg Jan 2019

A Mother Honors College Alternative To The Thesis, Amanda L. Ellenburg

Theses and Dissertations

My thesis was intended to inform readers about the one-woman show I performed, A Mother. In addition, my thesis described job positions within my field and the research I conducted for my production. Essentially, this may allow readers without any experience in the theatre to understand the process an actor undergoes during a production. Typically there are many people on a production team performing various roles. Instead, my tremendous challenge was acting as producer, director, actor, event coordinator, part designer, and marketing director. This paper includes acting advice from classmates, my instructor, Larry McDonald, and details of my use …

Kardía: A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing The Human Heart, Rebekah R. Mayfield Jan 2019

Kardía: A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing The Human Heart, Rebekah R. Mayfield

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The research project, Kardía; A Choreographic Investigation Utilizing the Human Heart, examined how findings regarding the study of the heart influences and expands choreographic options for and approaches to dance as a work of art. The heart is a unique and intricate organ that helps sustain life within a human body. Examined for this project were the structure, actions and functions of the human heart. This data informed and inspired the concepts that were applied to my choreography, culminating in the presentation of my original work entitled Kardía; The Quietest Voice. The creative process I used for this project …

Theater And The Rwandan Genocide, Chantal Kalisa Jan 2019

Theater And The Rwandan Genocide, Chantal Kalisa

French Language and Literature Papers

In 1994 Rwanda was the scene of genocide, or, more precisely in French, it was Ie theatre dugenocide (theater of genocide). Perpetrators and victims played their role while the rest of the world watched the "spectacle" live on television. Perhaps because of its spectacular aspect, the Rwandan genocide has inspired a number of artistic materials. In the last decade we have indeed witnessed the growth of literary and artistic expression in relation to the Rwandan genocide. Survivors and witnesses have told their stories in books and songs. Journalists, as well as other travelers "to the end of Rwanda," to use …

Theater Of Witness: The Patient Experience Of Dementia Shared Through Testimonial Performance, Salena Cui Jan 2019

Theater Of Witness: The Patient Experience Of Dementia Shared Through Testimonial Performance, Salena Cui

Phase 1

Introduction: Dementia is a condition that modern medicine is ill-equipped to address, and to which art may have much to offer. This project combines reflective and creative processes in a theater collaboration between patients, caregivers, and healthcare students. The goal was to explore the ways in which theater can heal, and to better understand the patient experience of dementia.

Methods: I worked with Teya Sepinuck on this project. We met with participants individually to conduct interviews about personal stories and held group workshops to explore our collective story. We worked with a percussionist and composer to explore accompanying music. …

"Must Be Heavyset": Casting Women, Fat Stigma, And Broadway Bodies, Ryan Donovan

Publications and Research

This article surveys how contemporary Broadway musicals cast fat women and focuses on Hairspray. The use of fat suits and contractual weight clauses figure into the discussion of fat stigma and casting practices. Seemingly body-positive musicals both celebrate and undermine the identities staged in them.

Mindful Acting, Terence Lee Jan 2019

Mindful Acting, Terence Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As we transition into a more goal-oriented society, our ability to nurture and cultivate individual growth in emotional, spiritual, and mental awareness in the performing arts has been stifled by the desire to get ahead in our modern-day race for success. This fierce struggle brings with it a risk of subconscious deterioration in mental, spiritual and emotional health. As actors in an aggressive industry, we are often faced with the monumental task of preserving our artistry while competing in the industry, and we often find ourselves overwhelmed by the inescapable pressures in the business of acting. In "Mindful Acting", I …
