Revolutionary Artistry-- Brecht, Marx, And The Evolution Of Epic Theatre, Wyatt Anderson
Revolutionary Artistry-- Brecht, Marx, And The Evolution Of Epic Theatre, Wyatt Anderson
Honors Capstone Projects
Playwrights have long drawn inspiration from a variety of muses in order to flesh out their works. The use of art and literature to critique society presents one such example, especially with regard to theatre when it critiques politics and human nature. In the case of German playwright Bertolt Brecht, one cannot fully understand his plays and the concept of epic theatre without looking at the influence of Marxism in his work. Indeed, it permeates his work through the years, with Brecht’s understanding of Marx’s writings evolving with clarity in his later works. Through sampling a variety of plays from …

Theater and Dance Presentations
Ten students and two faculty members of the UC Dance Program attended the Mid-Atlantic North regional conference of the American College Dance Association (ACDA) from March 4-7, 2020, at the University of Maryland, at College Park, MD. While at the conference, students performed in two dance works, participated in dance classes, and networked with dancers in peer institutions. A highlight of the event was the selection of Visiting Dance Professor Bailey Anderson’s dance, Ridiculous Rigor: Past, Present, and Possible, for the Gala performance. Included in this document are descriptions of the Student Achievement in Research and Creativity Committee Grants awarded …
Shattered Dolls: An Examination Of Authorship And The Boundaries Of Female Asian Stereotypes In Western Theatrical Literature And Film, Maya Mcgowan
Honors Projects
On March 15, 2018, an event called “Orientalism and the Portrayal of Asian Americans in Musicals,” co-hosted by Center Theatre Group and East West Players, brought to light questions involving misrepresentation of Asian Americans in theatrical literature. At the root of their argument was the idea that American playwrights had created stereotypical caricatures about the Asian and Asian American communities and thus were mistelling their stories. Through my research and a cumulative performance, I have found that authorship is the primary method for combating stereotypes within the theatre. In this paper, I will focus on the importance of authorship and …

Integrating Visual Arts In Every Lesson, Maddie Hommey, Karly Harwood, Kai Sizemore, Casey Mcbride
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
In this presentation, we, as future educators, provide numerous benefits to integrating visual arts into the classroom. Our rationale challenges the arguments teachers make against doing so as the impact the arts have on education is clear. Using examples from our own lives, others, and research from well known theorists, we hope to encourage other teachers to use visual arts in their classrooms to improve students’ engagement, self-worth, motor skills, language development, academic achievement, and more.
The Importance Of Frequencies In Sound, Jace Frank
The Importance Of Frequencies In Sound, Jace Frank
Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry
The purpose of this research is to understand instrument frequencies and how equalization plays into creating an enjoyable live sound experience. The frequencies of drums, guitars, and vocals are examined for the different sounds they produce and how to equalize them. A focus also goes into the different type of equalizers and understanding which would be the most beneficial given the instruments.

Formulated Ataxia, Alexandra Renner
Formulated Ataxia, Alexandra Renner
Honors Theses
Formulated Ataxia is an athletic and vigorous choreographic work based on the overall theme of recognizing order within chaos. With a cast of eleven dancers, I created a world that depicts the cycle of anxiety and how I seek organization within chaos. Choreographically, I toyed around with aspects of my neurological condition, synesthesia. Synesthesia can be described as a way of organization people and situations with numbers. Part of my research involved delving deep into the theory of chaos, as it mirrors the cyclical nature of my mental and emotional instability. This work invites a thrilling and exhausting experience for …
True Theatricality: What Separates Live Theatre From All Other Entertainment, Sarah Michelle Beattie
True Theatricality: What Separates Live Theatre From All Other Entertainment, Sarah Michelle Beattie
Senior Honors Theses
In order to better understand the art of live theatre in comparison to its many counterparts, an in-depth study of the elements of live theatre that separate it must be accomplished. Through Aristotle’s The Poetics, to many contemporary studies of theatricality, to recent scripts incorporating those elements and effectively using them, the analysis of theatricality can be applied to an original script of its own kind. Some elements that have been discovered are double casting, expression through song, and even a break in the classic two act structure. The application of these elements of theatricality present a lot more issues …

Graduating Presentations 2020: Six Point Convergence - Inner Workings, Jasmine Clark
Honors Theses
This portfolio serves as the fulfillment of both my honors thesis for the Lee Honors College, and my Department of Dance capstone for DANC 4800: Graduating Presentations. The typical process for DANC 4800 involves producing a concert in collaboration with the rest of the senior B.F.A. class, in which each member presents an original piece of choreography. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 crisis and the switch to distance education, our concert was cancelled, and we were forced to abruptly stop rehearsing. In this transition, my project shifted from the creation of a new work to the revisiting of a solo …

LimboLand: A One-Act Play about Death, for kids
Megan Huggins
Thesis Director: James Al-Shamma, Ph.D
Thesis Committee: Shawn Knight, Jessica Mueller
A loose adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem Inferno, LimboLand uses Alighieri’s model of the nine circles of Hell to illustrate the five stages of grief. In a script designed for theatre for young audiences, Dante, a young child, travels through different rooms as he attempts to cope with and understand his sister’s death. Dante follows Virgil, an older child, who knows a lot about the afterlife system without understanding any of it. The play includes an appendix …

The Historiography Of Ballet Russes And The Russian Revolution: Dramaturgy For The Play Ballet Russes, Sachen Kele Pillay
The Historiography Of Ballet Russes And The Russian Revolution: Dramaturgy For The Play Ballet Russes, Sachen Kele Pillay
Georgia College Student Research Events
This project investigates the political and artistic connections between the Ballet Russes dance company, and the wider socio-economic changes attributed to the Russian Revolution and the First World War. The 2019 Georgia College theatrical production of the play Ballet Russes, by Bernard Myers, follows the innovative and revolutionary ballet company of the same name. The story specifically focuses on the interpersonal relationship between the company’s Maestro Serge Diaghilev, and the legendary ballerino Vaslav Nijinsky. The central themes of the show revolve around the issues of exploitation, power structure, and revolution. The role of the dramaturg in the show’s production was …

The presenters are enrolled in TheatreUNI’s Dramaturgy course where they study drama through a theoretical lens to create analytical criticism and research contextual support for TheatreUNI’s current productions. They have compiled research into a dramaturgical website focused on topics relating to the text of Kaufman and Hart’s Pulitzer Prize winning play You Can’t Take it With You. We will be presenting our final website designed for TheatreUNI patrons, and discussing each of the topics that we individually researched. Our research covers the following topics through the lens of the 1930’s: Great Depression, entertainment industry, music, fashion, immigration, the Russian Revolution, …
In The Pit: The Sight And Sound Of Broadway Pit Orchestras, Kyle Krygielski
In The Pit: The Sight And Sound Of Broadway Pit Orchestras, Kyle Krygielski
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
The number of musicians in a Broadway pit orchestra has always been a point of contention between the American Federation of Musicians, Local 802 and the League of American Theatres and Producers. These two organizations have had many collective bargaining agreements that have helped dictate and alter the size of orchestras on Broadway. On one side you have the musicians, who are concerned with preserving jobs and the musical integrity of a show, and on the other you have the producers who are trying to ensure the overall and financial success of the show. This thesis examines these orchestral changes …

Baton Rouge Slam!: An Obituary For Summer 2016: A Critical Performance Ethnography Of Eclectic Truth Poetry Slam, Joshua Hamzehee
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This critical performance ethnography presents the theory, methodology, and practice surrounding the fieldwork, scripting, and performance of Baton Rouge SLAM!: An Obituary for Summer 2016. As participant-observer, director, and co-performer, I unpack social drama, performance ethnography, and slam culture by employing a lens rooted in critical race theory. Local poets permitted me to de- and re-contextualize their interviews into ensemble scenes and theatricalize their slam poems about the recent summer’s charged events. One year later, this involved and embodied process of ethnographic bricolage became the ensemble cast performance of Baton Rouge SLAM!: An Obituary for Summer 2016. Community members and …
The “Science” Of Story Structure, Diana Witt
The “Science” Of Story Structure, Diana Witt
Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference
Stories are immensely human. They help us learn and understand cultural and social contexts. The stories that we tell, see, and read have profound effects on our ideas and emotions, causing us to have visceral reactions. Stories are truly at the crux of how people relate to each other. In this talk, I will explore the necessary elements of stories and why they are effective. Storytellers across all mediums build plot and characters to make an audience care and draw them in. Authors and screenwriters have theorized about the main structures into which all stories fall. In modern media, story …
Virtual Touch: Embodied Experiences Of (Dis)Embodied Intimacy In Mediatized Performance, Naomi Petrea Bennett
Virtual Touch: Embodied Experiences Of (Dis)Embodied Intimacy In Mediatized Performance, Naomi Petrea Bennett
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I explore a phenomenon I call virtual touch, in which embodied sensations of touch are felt through non-tactile senses. In the digital age, online interactivity has expanded the ways in which individuals experience connection, intimacy, and touch. Digital media, which have traditionally been thought of as disembodied, nevertheless have the ability to elicit intense feelings of touch. Through analysis of digital and virtual installation art, I examine the ways that non-tactile touch remains rooted in the embodied experience. The works I include in this study create a feeling of virtual touch through a co-functioning of the …
Theater Of The Obsessed, Cynthia Sampson
Theater Of The Obsessed, Cynthia Sampson
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Theater of the Obsessed uses fandom to illustrate how audiencing can be a form of queer worldmaking. I begin by establishing that audiencing is a process that takes place over time and is not confined to the seat you’re sitting in while consuming various media. Because audiencing is a nearly invisible process, I turn to fandom and fanworks to demonstrate what some of the other parts look like. From there, I take a mystorical approach. That is, I use mystory to braid my personal audiencing, popular culture examples, and professional scholarship together to create a wide image. What becomes apparent …
Pilgrimage: True Belonging: Exploring The Human Desire To Belong Through Dance And Storytelling, Lincoln K. Belford
Pilgrimage: True Belonging: Exploring The Human Desire To Belong Through Dance And Storytelling, Lincoln K. Belford
Undergraduate Distinction Papers
The human sense of belonging morphs and changes as we mature and gain life experience. The relationships we make, or choose not to, affect the way we perceive ourselves, which directly correlates to our understanding of how we belong to the universe as a whole. Perception of self and belonging are inextricably connected, therefore by focusing on belonging to ourselves rather than to the world around us, we experience self-acceptance, allowing us to forge deeper, more meaningful connections with those we choose. True belonging is an active practice that takes effort, and involves reflection and critical evaluation of self. A …

"Where Is My Attention?", Robin B. Levenson-Andrews
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Attention is the key to all learning. Indeed, it is what will save our lives on a daily basis. In all my Communication courses, it is one of the first things I put forward as a question that students may ask of themselves as a check on their “internal considering.”
Philosopher/practitioner George Gurdjieff (1866-1949) called the constant rumble in our minds of random condemnations and re-imaginings of past events as “internal considering.” He felt it was detrimental to ourselves and our relationships with others; it is, I maintain, a constant “self considering” that takes us away from the present and …

Prosthetic Ontology Into Pedagogy: Applying Garoian’S Theory To The Performing Arts, Elise L. Kieffer Phd
Prosthetic Ontology Into Pedagogy: Applying Garoian’S Theory To The Performing Arts, Elise L. Kieffer Phd
Faculty & Staff Research and Creative Activity
Prosthetic pedagogy, as developed by Charles Garoian, provides a framework for using artificial-real worlds created by the arts to influence and impact teaching practice. The prosthetic space is artificial, separate, from the artist and audience, yet it is felt authentically, as if it were part of their being. Garoian explored prosthetic pedagogy through visual arts and museum experiences. This research further examines prosthetic pedagogy by applying it the Theatre. The art of theatre builds worlds onstage and through performance that allow performers to be and exist apart from their physical selves in the realm of prosthetic reality. The artist and …

Before I knew anything about learning theories, I was a constructivist. I am not completely sure why my methods so perfectly followed this learning theory, but one sure reason, comes directly from my discipline. In my own study of musical theatre, I experienced constructivist instruction. This article follows an autoethnographic reflection of constructivism at work in and through me as I taught in a small community in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.
Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick
Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick
Communication Studies Department Publications
In this essay, I interrogate my own experiences performing my queer identity through my painted nails. I attest to the ways queer bodies might performatively challenge and/or reinforce rigid norms of sexuality through mundane performances of (gendered) identity. To accomplish this, I engage in an autoethnographic exploration of queer performativity. I recount and analyze a series of anecdotes that illustrate how performances of queer identity in everyday life are accomplished—and policed—in mundane situations. In turn, I reflexively investigate the ways in which these performances situate me within a nexus of aesthetic, embodied, and ethical social interaction and performative resistance. I …

Convents And Novices In Early Modern English Dramatic Works: In Medias Res, Vanessa L. Rapatz
Convents And Novices In Early Modern English Dramatic Works: In Medias Res, Vanessa L. Rapatz
Late Tudor and Stuart Drama
Convents and Novices in Early Modern English Dramatic Texts: In Medias Res attends to the religious, social, and material changes in England during the century following the Reformation, specifically examining how the English came to terms with the meanings of convents and novices even after they disappeared from the physical and social landscape. In five chapters, it traces convents and novices across a range of dramatic texts that refuse easy generic classification: problem plays such as Shakespeare's Measure for Measure; Marlowe's comic tragedy The Jew of Malta; Margaret Cavendish's closet dramas The Convent of Pleasure and The Religious …
Roman Women In Shakespeare And His Contemporaries, Domenico Lovascio
Roman Women In Shakespeare And His Contemporaries, Domenico Lovascio
Late Tudor and Stuart Drama
This volume highlights the crucial role of Roman female characters in the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries by exploring with an unprecedented thoroughness and variety of perspectives the diverse issues connected to female identities in the early modern English plays set in ancient Rome. Roman Women in Shakespeare and His Contemporaries puts Shakespeare’s Roman world in dialogue with a number of Roman plays by writers as diverse as Matthew Gwinne, Ben Jonson, John Fletcher, Philip Massinger, Thomas May, and Nathanael Richards. Thus, the collection seeks to challenge conventional wisdom about the plays under scrutiny by specifically focusing on their …
Hero: The Musical, Owen Mefford
Hero: The Musical, Owen Mefford
Gatton Academy Student Research Outcomes
Over the past year and a half, I, aided by my research mentor, have undertaken the process of writing the libretto for an original stage musical. The concept is an idea I have somewhat developed for years, that of a musical based on a spoof of the superhero genre and its many tropes. The musical follows Danny, a young college kid who has just moved to the big city and gains the power to freeze time. As he becomes a blossoming super hero, he must balance his romantic interest in his friend Sam, a reporter, with his new duties. Along …
