Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell
Musical Quotation In The Music Of George Crumb, Richard M. Dowell
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates American composer George Crumb's employment of musical quotation in his works from 1962 to 1985. The thesis also contains a brief biography of the composer and overviews of his major compositional style traits and his musical influences. Because Crumb often quotes from the same composers and musics that have influenced his musical style, the subject musical influences is related to the main thesis, musical quotation. Also, Crumb sometimes borrows a specific gesture from another composer's work without actually quoting it--that is making significant note and/or rhythm alterations; this type of borrowing is described by Crumb as a …
Aristotelian Catharsis: A Theatrical Essential, Brian Seth Colburn
Aristotelian Catharsis: A Theatrical Essential, Brian Seth Colburn
Whittier Scholars Program
This project focuses on Catharsis, the Aristotelian function of tragedy, this study asserts that Aristotelian catharsis is one that works simultaneously with the emotions and the intellect to achieve its effect. This paper argues that this system is more effective theatrically than the various other theories. This paper’s intent is to further interpret Aristotle's meaning of “catharsis” and prove its validity in comparison to other views on the function of theatre and/or tragedy. This project is split into sections, the first being its thesis which essentially states “catharsis cannot separate the emotions and the intellect.” The next section covers the …

Into the Woods is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. The main characters are taken from "Little Red Riding Hood,", "Jack and the Beanstalk", "Rapunzel", and "Cinderella", as well as several others. The musical is tied together by a story involving a childless baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family (the original beginning of The Grimm Brothers' Rapunzel), their interaction with a witch who has …

Masters Theses
This study investigates whether a dance choreographer's lack of knowledge of film, television, or video theory and technology, particularly the capabilities of the camera and montage, restricts choreographic communication via these media.
First, several film and television choreographers were surveyed. Second, the literature was analyzed to determine the evolution of dance on film and television (from the choreographers' perspective). Third, shooting and editing theories that maximize kinesthesis were examined.
Three primary conclusions were drawn: (1) Historically, choreographers of critically acclaimed film or television products seemed to understand major principles for shooting and montage; (2) choreographers who expanded their knowledge of …

The Tempest, Otterbein University Theatre And Dance Department
1991-1992 Season
The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–1611, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where the sorcerer Prospero, rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skillful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to cause his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to believe they are shipwrecked and marooned on the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's …
