The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone Jan 2000

The New Performer, Sheila A. Malone

SWITCH

This article presents a discussion of the broadening definitions of performer and performance and the ways in which technology contributes to that flexibility through this intermix of the real world and its interaction with virtual reality. The author then details how the nature of this relationship not only shifts the role of performer but redefines performance as both real and virtual. She argues how new media in the age of technology has opened the doors for its visual, aural and textual information to both mimic and record reality.

Dancing Boys, Anthony Shay Jan 2000

Dancing Boys, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The informal, and occasionally formal, institution of the dancing boy--the term used by most Western writers in their descriptions of the Islamic world--has been attested for centuries by European observers throughout the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia, as well as the Indian subcontinent and throughout the Islamic areas of Southeast Asia such as Indonesia and the southern Philippines. These individuals have been called by a variety of names: bachchec [batcha], literally "child" in Persian and some Turkish languages, luti (itinerant performer), raqqas (dancer) in many regions, kocek (little) and tavsan (rabbit) in Ottoman Turkey, khawal in …

'Rather Say I Play The Man I Am': Shakespeare's Coriolanus And Elizabethan Anti-Theatricality, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2000

'Rather Say I Play The Man I Am': Shakespeare's Coriolanus And Elizabethan Anti-Theatricality, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Books and Book Chapters

In the second act of Shakespeare's Coriolanus, the hero is informed that his acceptance as a Roman consul is dependent upon donning the robe of humility and petitioning the common people in the market-place for their ratifying vote. Coriolanus recoils from the custom, outraged at the idea of acting a part—complete with costume, dialogue, and stage directions— that does not correspond with his inner truth. At this moment and others, Coriolanus echoes the anti-theatricalist rhetoric of Elizabethan pamphleteers like the popular and prolific Stephen Gosson. In many ways, Coriolanus serves as a stand-in for the anti-theatrical ideology of Gosson and …

The 6/8 Beat Goes On: Persian Popular Music From Bazm-E Qajariyyeh To Beverly Hills Garden Parties, Anthony Shay Jan 2000

The 6/8 Beat Goes On: Persian Popular Music From Bazm-E Qajariyyeh To Beverly Hills Garden Parties, Anthony Shay

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

This avoidance of scholarly investigation into popular culture has been particularly prominent in Middle East studies, in which, aside from definitively "premodern" folklore, popular culture is presumed relevant only to the mass culture of the West. In contrast to nearly invisible popular traditions is what Edward Said (1978) terms the "timeless, frozen East" that possesses only what we would characterize as "high" culture. Our highbrow/lowbrow distinctions do not necessarily work well as a description of the state of Iranian culture, and yet they are relevant to some contexts. Most native Iranian music scholars, and their non-Iranian disciples, often eschew the …

A Traveler's Path: An Original Play, Deborah Saad Jan 2000

A Traveler's Path: An Original Play, Deborah Saad

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

For my senior honors thesis, I wanted to do a creative project. I chose to write an original play, hoping to draw upon my experiences over the last four years, including having already written a one act play my sophomore year. I spent a year working with ideas, reading other plays to examine different forms, and experimenting with the characters. The bulk of the dialogue was written this spring, and I worked with my faculty readers to trim down the excesses and sharpen the focus of the plot. I believe I completed my goal in authoring the play: I learned …

Exploring The Creative Process: A Study In Playwriting, Alexander L. Evenson Jan 2000

Exploring The Creative Process: A Study In Playwriting, Alexander L. Evenson

Honors Theses, 1963-2015

My original intentions when I began this project were to write and present a full-length play of my own design, examining the farm crisis through the medium of theater. The reason I chose not to use the title of my play for the title of my project is because the vast majority of my time was spent discovering the world outside of my script. Through my struggles to bring my characters to life, to develop an effective plot while avoiding a didactic analysis of the issue, and with the genre itself, I began to discover what the creative process is …

An Intercultural Play, Donna Lee Mcclung

All Graduate Projects

The purpose of this project was to write a play that could be used as a teaching tool for addressing multicultural issues in educational curricula. The literature review suggests that dramatic activities can be effective teaching strategies to address multicultural and diversity issues. The one-act play, Irene, is set in a middle-class American neighborhood and focuses on the conflict within a broken home.

Rev. Of Moissi: Triest, Berlin, New York: Eine Schauspielerlegende By Rüdiger Schaper. A Biography Of The Legendary Actor Alexander Moissi., William Grange

Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

Unlike most of the great German actors before him, Alexander Moissi was not a native German speaker. He was born in Albania and grew up speaking Greek and Italian--yet he had a forty-year career in German that earned him millions of dollars in performances all over the world. In none of those performances did Moissi lose the Mediterranean inflections in the language of Goethe and Schiller. But that did not diminish his stature; it enhanced it.

The Putdown: Intergenerational Communicative Dynamics Of Male Characteristics In The Plays Of August Wilson, Bryan C. Moore Jan 2000

The Putdown: Intergenerational Communicative Dynamics Of Male Characteristics In The Plays Of August Wilson, Bryan C. Moore

Graduate Research Papers

Most African-American playwrights use realistic dialogue and monologues in their plays to share messages and stories about African-American culture, history, and society with others. One of the most popular and successful African-American playwrights today is August Wilson. His plays are a plethora of storytelling, and makes use of strong dialogue. Wilson displays elements of African-American culture and history in each of his plays, mostly through interaction and conversations between the characters. Wilson's plays are part of a larger project known as the twentieth-century cycle, in which each play represents a decade of African-American history and culture.

Tracing Image And Bodily Displacement In Modern And Postmodern Dance, Carolyn Margaret Griffiths Jan 2000

Tracing Image And Bodily Displacement In Modern And Postmodern Dance, Carolyn Margaret Griffiths

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Through time the dancer has been both celebrated and disadvantaged by antithetical ideas: the division of soul and body, form and matter, life and death, artist and audience. For the romantics, the dancing body stood in a relationship to poetic thought in much the same way as the dancer stood to the body. Notions of the body in early modernism arose from cultural and political constructs through which poets and writers examined the nature of truth. These poets, Yeats in particular, hinted at a premise that a whole history of culture may be necessary to explain why women and art …

Minotaur Or The King’S Bull. By Jonathon Ward. Urban Youth Theater, Henry Street Settlement Abrons Arts Center, New York. 23 July 1999 (Performance Review), Patricia Herrera Jan 2000

Minotaur Or The King’S Bull. By Jonathon Ward. Urban Youth Theater, Henry Street Settlement Abrons Arts Center, New York. 23 July 1999 (Performance Review), Patricia Herrera

Theatre and Dance Faculty Publications

The production of Minotaur was not only a reinterpretation of an ancient Greek myth, but an opportunity for Latino hip-hop artists to pass down a cultural tradition to the next generation. Latino artists situated hip-hop as a social movement, and the teen performers physically embodied this in the songs and dance. In this way, the Athenian rebellion became the breaking of stereotypes often associated with urban youths. The performers beautifully portrayed this act of resistance when Theseus took Minos’ golden crown, wore it, and passed it down for all the Athenians to wear.
