Many college and universities across the United States offer programs in theater and dance. Training often exists to facilitate the actor or the dancer in becoming separate participants in a similar art. For the college actor, movement training typically incorporates traditional approaches as developed by Matthias Alexander, Tadashi Suzuki, or Sanford Meisener. Although these lessons in movement training hold merit, alternative strategies exist. The development of the Dancing/or the Actor program utilizes the principles of dance as the primary tools in actor movement training. Since its premiere in 1885 at the Savoy Theatre in London, The Mikado (or The Town of Titipu) has become one of the most-performed pieces of musical theatre in history. As with many of Gilbert and Sullivan’s productions, the show satirizes aspects of Victorian Britain’s politics and aristocracy; in The Mikado, however, the duo cleverly cloaked these criticisms behind a charming story set not in Britain, but in exotic Japan. Synopsis: In October 1998 in the middle of the prairie outside Laramie, Wyoming, Matthew Shepard, a 21 year old student at the University of Wyoming, was tied to a fence post, severely beaten, robbed, , tortured and left, alone, to die. His body -- battered, bloody, barely clinging to life -- was discovered eighteen hours later. He was rushed to the hospital and put on life support. He died five days later. The reason for this brutal crime? Matthew Shepard was gay.

This thesis production includes pre-production research and documentation, auditions, casting of actors, direction, and post-production evaluation of The Dalles High School's winter production of "Little Shop of Horrors." Steel Magnolias, by Robert Harling, is a poignant tragicomedy set in the fictional town of Chinquapin, Louisiana from 1983 to 1985. The play's setting is a beauty salon that serves as psychiatrist's office, confessional and home away from home for several women of the town. This play reflects the strong sisterhood needed by women as they struggle through life's tragedies and rejoice during life's triumphs. The play presents characters that learn to grow stronger as they face each new obstacle. They are able to persevere because of the strong community of women to which they belong.

This project is a handbook of techniques and strategies for beginning directors of high school drama programs.
