Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda Nov 2019

Weaponization Of The Border, Neomi De Anda

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

In response to deadly shootings having taken place near the author's hometown, this paper addresses the impact of weaponization within the culture of the United States as it shows itself in an epidemic of gun violence. Attentive to Christian thinking on violence, this paper pushes for renewed conversation on weaponization, and it challenges scholars to work toward concrete actions to deconstruct the tools of weaponization.

Since this paper was first presented, the author has provided multiple appendices that chart the instances of gun violence between 2019 and 2024 within schools and for mass shootings.

The Role Of Biblical Literacy In Discipling Believers In The Local Church, Joseph G. Austin Nov 2019

The Role Of Biblical Literacy In Discipling Believers In The Local Church, Joseph G. Austin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The degradation of biblical literacy has increased in recent years to the point that many church attendees have very little actual knowledge or understanding of Biblical truths. This lack of knowledge is a direct correlation to the lack of moral foundations for many of today’s believers, particularly with younger generations. The goal of this paper is to provide a balanced, substantive, and interactive plan for churches, large and small, to integrate into their discipleship programs or use to assist the local church in establishing a discipleship program. The process will include surveys gauging the level of biblical literacy among self-identified …

If Not Stewards Of Creation, What Are We?, David Warners, Matthew Kuperus Heun Oct 2019

If Not Stewards Of Creation, What Are We?, David Warners, Matthew Kuperus Heun

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

What if God didn’t place humans on earth to be stewards of creation? If not stewards, then what is our relationship to the nonhuman creation? These are the central questions addressed by Beyond Stewardship: New Approaches to Creation Care (The Calvin Press, 2019). Using voices and insights of 14 authors from diverse disciplines, this book is filled with fresh ideas and encouragement to help Christians better understand both their place in the world and the many relationships that embed them within God’s good but groaning creation.

A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker Oct 2019

A New Catechism For The Digital Age, Bruce D. Baker

SPU Works

Preaching and teaching in our digital age demands theological reflection to answer challenging questions raised by exponential technologies. Can an AI become conscious? Is AI intelligent, really? Can a robot sin? Can we program morality? Can we upload our minds? Is transhumanism a technical possibility? Do we need to rethink eschatology? In this paper I hope to contribute to a constructive dialog. I suggest this catechism format as a means to support the need of the Church to teach sound theological doctrine with respect to these challenging questions. By no means do I wish to imply that this catechism is …

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat Oct 2019

Looking Back At The Evolution Of James Cone’S Theological Anthropology: A Brief Commentary, Sekhmet Maat

History, Political Science, Geography, and Africana Studies Faculty Research

Reverend Dr. James Hal Cone has unquestionably been a key architect in defining Black liberation theology. Trained in the Western theological tradition at Garrett Theological Seminary, Cone became an expert on the theology of Twentieth-century Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth. Cone’s study of Barth led to his 1965 doctoral dissertation, “The Doctrine of Man in the Theology of Karl Barth,” where he critically examined Barth’s Epistle to the Romans and Church Dogmatics. His contemporaries and more recent African American theologians and religious scholars have questioned the extent to which Karl Barth’s ideas shaped Cone’s Black theology. The purpose of this brief …

Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus Oct 2019

Data And Identity: Notes Toward A Theology Of The Digitally Enhanced Self, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

In the HBO-BBC miniseries "Years and Years," a teenager named Bethany (!) comes out as transhuman and tells her parents she wants to “live forever as information ... [to] be data!” As information about us increasingly takes the form of digital data, we are all of us becoming data. Indeed, so much of our attention and agency is engaged with digital information in digital environments that the philosopher Luciano Floridi describes us as “inforgs” living “onlife” in an “infosphere.” Through nearly constant and ubiquitous patterns of digital interactions with human and artificial agents, we are creating digitally extended and enhanced …

The Gendering Of Voice In Medieval Hindu Literature, Nancy M. Martin Oct 2019

The Gendering Of Voice In Medieval Hindu Literature, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"To fully grasp the implications of the gendering of voice in this literature, we must first understand the religious context that generates these voices and the life stories of the saintly figures in whose names these voices continue to be spoken. Accordingly, we will trace the origins and nature of devotional Hinduism. Theologically gender inclusive and embracing a feminine spiritual identity, the stories and songs of its saints will nevertheless reveal an ongoing bias against women and upholding of patriarchal norms that is continually challenged, particularly by women saints whose life stories follow very different trajectories than their male counterparts, …

Today, that legacy continues to shape Oral Roberts University as a shining example of racial diversity among Christian universities in America.

2019 Denominational Survey Results, Calvin University Oct 2019

2019 Denominational Survey Results, Calvin University

CRCNA Denominational Survey Results

As part of the denominational ministry plan, Our Journey 2020, the CRCNA has contracted with Calvin College’s Social Research Center to administer a denominational survey every year. The results from the 2019 survey have now been compiled.

All CRC-affiliated adults and older youth are welcome to respond to this survey every year as they are led. In order to ensure a healthy number of responses to the survey every year, however, CRC leaders have randomly assigned every CRC church to one of five “cohorts.” Each cohort includes about 20 percent of all active congregations, and each congregation will be asked …

Partnering With Faith Communities: Challenges Of Religious And Secular Literacy, Rob Brodrick, Kelly S. Johnson, Anwar Khan, Leocadie Lushombo, Edith Tapia Oct 2019

Partnering With Faith Communities: Challenges Of Religious And Secular Literacy, Rob Brodrick, Kelly S. Johnson, Anwar Khan, Leocadie Lushombo, Edith Tapia

Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

Partnering with Faith Communities: Challenges of Religious and Secular Literacy

While many scholars have noted the necessity of a grasp of the complexity of religious belief for engagement in international relations, human rights, and humanitarian work, the topic of religious belief remains fraught and underdeveloped in human rights activism. Concerns include the conviction that religion must be treated as private in order to preserve an inclusive public life; evidence that religious communities may oppose the human rights' groups commitments on LGBTQI and women's rights; and anxieties that various religious groups will exclude or manipulate those who are not members and …

The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals In Early Gospel Narratives, Edmondo Lupieri Oct 2019

The Earliest Magdalene: Varied Portrayals In Early Gospel Narratives, Edmondo Lupieri

Theology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

In the early writings produced by the followers of Jesus, Mary Magdalene is connected with key events in the narrative regarding Jesus: his death on the cross, his burial, and his resurrection. At first sight, her figure seems to grow in importance through time. Her name and figure, indeed, are completely absent from the oldest extant texts written by a follower of Jesus, the authentic letters of Paul. This is particularly striking, since 1 Cor 15:5–8 contains the earliest known series of witnesses to the resurrection, but only men are named specifically.

The Next Page Of Yoga Anatomy: An Anatomical Lens On Selected Yoga Asanas, Viana Chau Oct 2019

The Next Page Of Yoga Anatomy: An Anatomical Lens On Selected Yoga Asanas, Viana Chau

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Yoga has become a widely-recognized form of physical activity as well as an effective therapeutic intervention. It is a self-discipling way of life, taking advantage of the powerful effects from the combination of breathing exercises (pranayama), physical postures (asanas), and meditation on calming the nervous system and balancing the mind, body, and spirit. However, over time, the contemporary definition of yoga, especially in the United States, has decreased the emphasis on the religious spirituality component and increased the emphasis on physical activity. Although one may argue that this is not the traditional yoga, this change not only breaks down the …

Development And Implementation Of Selected Spiritual Disciplines For The Worship Team Leaders Of Monte Vista Baptist Church, Clifton Edwin Kosier Oct 2019

Development And Implementation Of Selected Spiritual Disciplines For The Worship Team Leaders Of Monte Vista Baptist Church, Clifton Edwin Kosier

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

One of the foremost doxological problems of the twenty-first century is complacency in worship. Deficient spiritual development of the follower of Christ is rampant among Christians; many believers, suffering from this, have moved away from the purpose of man - to have a love relationship. This relationship has been replaced with a task-oriented spirit. No longer do we leave worship ready to make a difference for the Kingdom of God, but Christians come to complete a task and remove it from a long list of “to dos” in their busy world. Corporate worship has become habitual while lacking spiritual meaning. …

Leading & The Kingdom Of God, Albert Boerema Oct 2019

Leading & The Kingdom Of God, Albert Boerema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Leading in Christian schools is a deeply satisfying and challenging venture which has two central aspects—coordinating the activities of the organization and coordinating those activities in a specific direction. Leading, in general, often focuses on the first aspect, solving problems, taking care of all the large and small tasks that need to be attended to in schools. Often, those school leaders who take care of these details and run a tight ship are respected. But that second aspect, leading in a specific direction may be more fundamental. Because of the Christian nature of the school, that second aspect is seen …
