The book of Acts was written mainly for history so we would not expect to find much doctrine in it. And yet it is full of doctrine. For this we must thank the Holy Spirit who has preserved it to us by inspiration. St. Luke was inspired with the information necessary to the recording of the speeches we find in the book. These speeches are the chief sources of doctrine in this book though not the only ones. A study of the book for any one doctrine reveals incidentally many other doctrines. It was therefore as a consequence of this controversy that the latent heretical tendencies of the trichotomous doctrine were for the first time fully discovered, and dichotomy was urged by the Church not only as true doctrine, but also as the antidote for this specific heresy. Especially has dichotomy been championed by the Western Church, whose teachers have been, as a rule, advocates of the two element view. This is true also of Luther and the older dogmaticians. While the question is today scarcely a burning issue, yet it seems still to have champions for each side.

The inception or Mormonism took place in 1830, when on the 6th of April of that year Joseph Smith Jr. organized the “Church of Jesus Christ or the Latter Day Saints" at Fayette, Seneca County, New York. The first point which strikes the reader of this book is that it purports to have been written by the author of a "former treatise” (Acts 1:1) addressed to the same person, Theophilus; a treatise which gave an account of all the Acts and words of the Lord from the beginning to the conclusion of His earthly ministry, terminated by His ascension.
