The eschatological emphasis as it is found in Christianity and its implications for the believer help to make Christianity the unique religion that it is. As God's revelation of Himself. to mankind, Christianity preaches an eternity with God, an eternity of certainty and hope. In contrast with some of the religions developed by man's philosophical invention, it speaks with certainty of the fact, of eternal life with God; in contrast with others it offers a living hope of an existence the marks of which are individuality, purpose, and bliss. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the relationship between Luther and this disparate radical element of the reformation. For this purpose we must distinguish between two aspects of the Radical Movement. Luther was forced to relate himself to Evangelical Radicalism as a historical phenomenon. This aspect of the relationship will be discussed in Chapter II of the thesis. Of greater importance is the theological relationship between Luther and Radicalism. The emphasis will be on the chief content of each category of existence, namely the aesthetic, the ethical and the religious. We will treat the third category, the religious, according to Kierkegaard's own two-told division of the religious stage--Religion A and Religion B. Ecclesiastical, or dogmatical, terminology has proved to be a convenient tool to convey Scriptural truths succinctly and precisely and to reject erroneous views. However, ecclesiastical terminology may also become a barrier to a common understanding and may actually be the cause that two partners in a conversation talk past each other. The usus loquendi also in ecclesiastical terminology is never constant. The terminology adopted in the Chalcedonian Creed is a case in point.
