An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.

The purpose of this study is two fold: first, to review the historical sources pertaining to the observance of fasting from the time of the establishment of the church in 1830 until 1896, when the last essential change in its observance occurred; and second, as the payment of fast offerings is so closely related to an analysis of the subject, to trace its development out of the Church's policy to provide for its poor.

It must be kept in mind that this thesis does not propose to relate and discuss in great detail every minute phase of Luther's concept of the devil. Such a study would take several years, for thoughts concerning the devil permeated nearly every area of Luther's writings. The St. Louis edition of Luther's Works devotes nearly twenty-two columns to an index registering Luther's comments on the devil. This thesis then may be more properly called a general overview of Luther's demonology.

The scope of this paper is to attempt to show the source of the theology of the movement, "American Lutheranism." Beyond that it does not pretend to make an exhaustive study of the field or related fields. It does show two things, however: first, that crossing denominational lines for fellowship involves a compromise with your own theology, often the sacrifice of truth on your part; second, that the theology of the movement was thoroughly Reformed and not Lutheran at all as Schmucker insisted it was.
