Because of conditions of war only a fragment of these lectures has been preserved. This was published under the title: Am Anfang schuf Gott Himmel und Erde. The opening sentences of the lecture proper are: "We begin by referring to a particular historical document, the oldest, perhaps, in existence, the creation account of the Bible. Rather than being an exhaustive study of perhaps one of the reasons or the Anabaptists' rejection of infant baptism, this thesis presents a somewhat broader look at the background of the movement, and the social, political, and theologica1 attitudes of the Anabaptists, followed by a more thorough investigation of five of the particularly fundamental objections the Anabaptists raised against infant baptisrn. The writer shall attempt to be as objective as possible in presenting the material contained in the body of the thesis. His subjective evaluation and conclusions are contained in the last chapter.

The problem with which this thesis will be occupied is the determination of the content of the title "Son of Man" and demonstrating the sources of this content. An investigation of this sort will prove that the content of "Son of Man” is anything but simple; it is paradoxical. This paper is limited in its main part to what August Vilmar had to say about the Sacraments and what he termed “sacramental actions" ( sakramentale Handlungen). It is difficult, in a few words, to determine just what Vilmar included under these terms because in keeping with the Lutheran Symbols he did not categorically limit the Sacraments to a certain number and exclude all other acts of the Church. In certain contexts he spoke of seven and more Sacraments, and in other contexts, of only two Sacraments, placing the lesser acts of the Church into the category “sacramental” actions." In …

We shall begin the final installment of this article with the judgment that one of the truths about justification that St. Paul holds is that justification is complete before there is such a thing as faith. This fact of Paul's teaching has been known, particularly in the theological literature of "Missouri Lutherans," as objective justification. The term is not a good one, chiefly for the reason that the counterpart to it, subjective justification, if it means anything, should mean a justification that goes on in the believer, a thing which no "Missourian" ever held.

The LXX does not afford us much help as we try to understand what St. Paul means by faith, except in one respect, which will be clear later. There is, of course, in the Old Testament the apostle's great example of faith, the patriarch Abraham. The Psalms, moreover, are replete with expressions which are the accents of faith. As Stewart has well said, "The thing itself can be traced everywhere from Genesis to Malachi," and the same writer quite correctly points to Heb. 11 and its many examples of faith drawn from the Old Testament.
