The reason I am writing this dissertation is to introduce another side of Zen, Soto, which is completely unknown in the Western world; and at the same time to bring Dogen's teaching to the attention of Western scholars, since it is famous in Japan as the most profound branch of the philosophy of Zen. Unfortunately, none of Dogen' s teaching has yet been translated into English except Masunaga's private publication given above. The purpose of this thesis is to show how these Yoga sutras of Patanjali contain the methods for the regenerating and recreating factor in human life; and that these methods can be carried into present-day, practical living.

Since the issuance of the Manifesto by President Wilford Woodruff on September 25, 1890, discontinuing the practice of plural marriage by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, intensive efforts have been made by dissenters to show that authority to practice polygamy has secretly continued to the present day. Claiming that the Church departed from its original teachings when it discontinued the practice of plural marriage and that the Manifesto was adopted merely as an act of appeasement, "fundamentalists" have attempted to show that the doctrine of plural marriage was revealed to the Latter-day Saints as an irrevocable decree, …

This study has been prompted by the apparently similar claims of the Sixteenth century Anabaptists and the Nineteenth century Mormons of having effected a restoration of the "True Church" after a period of complete apostacy in Christendom. It has attempted to ascertain the extent to whcih these claims actually are similar by comparing the teachings of the two movements regarding the characteristics of the "True Church."

Fifty and seventy-five years ago the burning question in studies of Acts concerned the factual accuracy of Luke's record, which seemed to differ from, even to contradict, Paul's account in his epistles. The integrity of Luke was assailed by all but the most conservative. Source criticism was in full flood, and Acts was dissected and divided into tiny segments which were labeled "Jerusalem A" or "Jerusalem B" or "Antioch" or "Peter" or some such tag, depending on the exegete and his predilections. No word is more characteristic of Christian faith than the word χάϱις, grace. It conveys the central and fundamental idea of the Christian religion.1 In Lambert's opinion χάϱις is the distinctive watchword of the New Testament; in fact, the words "grace reigns" might be placed over every page. The New Testament scholar Moffatt asserts that the New Testament is a religion of grace, or it is nothing.

The sole contribution of the Netherlands to modern Old Testament theology is the Hoofdlijnen der Theologie van het Oude Testament of Th. C. Vriezen, professor of Old Testament at the University of Groningen. Opposing both the "mummifying process" of absolutizing the Old Testament as God's Word and the opposite fault of making it only man's word, Vriezen calls for a "theological Biblical criticism," and wishes in his book to bridge the gap between scientific Old Testament study and its use for practical, religious purposes. This paper will attempt to analyze the causes of the resurgence of Old Testament theology, to understand the various methods or approaches of major scholars in the field, and to analyze the results of these methods.

This is the title of a 315-page book written in German (Luthers geistige Welt, 2d ed., 1953) by the Heidelberg church historian Heinrich Bornkamm, translated into English by Martin Bertram (professor of German at Concordia Senior College, Fort Wayne, Ind.), and published by Concordia Publishing House, St. Louis. Before analyzing the content of this volume the question why Bornkamm's book was made available to American readers deserves some consideration.
