A Marxist De-Lutheranization Of The German Reformation, Douglas C. Stange

Concordia Theological Monthly

In 1947, when the rebuilding of a Europe ravaged by world war had only begun, a classical study of Thomas Müntzer appeared in Russia by the eminent historian, Moisei Mendelevich Smirin, entitled Nordnaja reformazija T. Mjunzera I welikaja krestjanskaja wojna. Five years later it was translated into German, and in 1956 it was enlarged and rcvised. Smirin's effort earncd him not only the Stalin prize, second class, but also acceptance as the "orthodox voice" in the confirmation of the Müntzer legend. Friedrich Engels in 1850 had baptized Münrzer's role in the German Reformation in the pure mainstream of Marxist history. …

Changes In The Missouri Synod, Arthur C. Repp Jul 1967

Changes In The Missouri Synod, Arthur C. Repp

Concordia Theological Monthly

Have there been doctrinal changes in The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod? Few questions have disturbed that Synod more during the past quarter of a century. Both negative and affirmative answers have been staunchly maintained. ''Missouri has not changed its doctrinal stand" was the repeated claim made by Theodore Graebner, though few men changed their doctrinal position as much as he did in so short a time.

Luther On Justification, John F. Johnson Jul 1967

Luther On Justification, John F. Johnson

Concordia Theological Monthly

Once upon a time every student of theology identified in any way with the Lutheran Confessions was able to read, pronounce, and understand the expression articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae. More importantly, he was not only able to read it; he believed with all his heart that this designation referred to the doctrine of justification. Indeed, this has always been the distinguishing mark of evangelical Lutheranism.

Martin Luther's Views On The State Of The Dead, Philip J. Secker

Concordia Theological Monthly

In 1765 the Anglican theologian Francis Blackburne asserted that Blessed Martin Luther “espoused the doctrine of the sleep of the soul, upon a scriptural foundation, and then he made use of it as a confutation of purgatory and saint worship, and continued in that belief to the last moment of his life.”

“The Weapons Of Their Warfare": A Study In Early Christian Polemic, Richard P. Jungkuntz

Concordia Theological Monthly

Illuminating for an understanding of the patristic mind in general is an examination of the techniques and forms of rebuttal that the fathers employed in opposing Epicureanism. Basically these methods fall into four categories: religious answers, debaters' tricks, stock arguments, and appeals to "science."

Notes On The Inerrancy Of Scripture, Robert Preus

Concordia Theological Monthly

This study is o1fered as an approach to the problem of the inerrancy of Scripture as it concerns the Lutheran Church today. At the same time the attempt is made to be timely and to take into account contemporary issues raised by modern Biblical theology.

Χάρις, Helen Baine May 1967

Χάρις, Helen Baine

Student Scholarship

The doctrine of grace serves as a foundational and often controversial pillar of the Christian church, necessitating constant reconsideration throughout history. This document explores the historical evolution of the concept, beginning with its roots in the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, grace is closely tied to God's steadfast love and the covenant with Israel. However, St. Paul emerged as the first profound Christian interpreter, defining grace as a free, undeserved gift from God made manifest through Jesus Christ. For Paul, salvation is achieved through faith and grace alone, explicitly excluding human works or merit as a basis …

Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis May 1967

Characteristics Of Southeast Asian Islam As Factors In A Theology Of The Christian Mission To Philippine Muslims, Robert Mcamis

Doctor of Theology Dissertation

The Christian mission to Islam offers one of the greatest challenges which the Christian Church has ever faced. In 1962 the Lutheran Church in the Philippines, in spite of its limited manpower and resources, accepted the challenge of the Christian mission to Philippine Islam. At the initial stage of this mission it is well to analyze the problem in detail. This demands a thorough understanding of Philippine Islam. The objective of this study is a clear picture of the Muslim situation in the Philippines together with implications for the Christian mission to Philippine Islam.

The Liberation Of The Creature: A Study Of The Interpretation Of Romans 8:19-22 By Representative Lutheran Theologians, Nestor Beck

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The present "study of the interpretation of Romans 8:19-22" prompted by the following reasons. First, the passage is somewhat of a puzzle to the unprepared reader of the epistle to the Romans. Second, the passage has been quoted to enhance the struggle for a better world. The question arises whether such a use of the passage is legitimate. Third, the passage has become in Lutheran theological tradition the centre of the controversy on the "destruction or renewal" of the present. The need world. arises to verify whether the passage actually teaches the renovation of the world and whether it stands …

Rudolf Bultmann's Concept Of Gnosticism And Some Contemporary Criticism Of It, Theodore Eisold

The primary purpose of this thesis is to examine Rudolf Bultmann's concept of Gnosticism to gain a fuller understanding of Bultmann's use of this term as well as to gain an insight into Gnosticism as it may have affected New Testament literature. The investigation seems necessary because of the many uncertainties connected with Gnosticism and with the backgrounds of early Christianity.

Luther's Exegetical Principle Of The Analogy Of Faith, Otto Hof Apr 1967

Luther's Exegetical Principle Of The Analogy Of Faith, Otto Hof

Concordia Theological Monthly

It was clear to Martin Luther that what was at issue in his discussion with his opponents, with Rome on the one hand and with the enthusiasts on the other, was not so much the question of principle regarding the importance and relevance of the Bible-in whatever way and however qualifiedly its authority was on all sides theoretically acknowledged and practically brought to bear in controversy through argumentation by means of Bible passages - as rather the question concerning the correct interpretation of the Holy Scripture.
