Servants Without Hire: Emerging Concepts Of Christian Ministry In The Campbell-Stone Movement, William Martin Smith Jan 1968

Servants Without Hire: Emerging Concepts Of Christian Ministry In The Campbell-Stone Movement, William Martin Smith

ACU Brown Library Monograph Series

Based on the Reed Lectures from 1967, Smith traces the anti-clerical message that accompanied the frontier religious preaching of Alexander Campbell and Barton Stone. Their hopes were that congregations could appoint their own leaders without the undue influence of outsiders. These evangelists were to be first and foremost servants, with no distinction between lay members and ministers. Smith, then traces the development of a professional ministry system within Disciples of Christ into the 1960s as churches called for greater levels of training among their preachers. Chapters include: ▪ A Nineteenth Century Revolution: A Free Ministry in a Free Society ▪Pastors-Evangelists-Bishops …

A Critique: “Two Levels Of History.", David W. Lotz Jan 1968

A Critique: “Two Levels Of History.", David W. Lotz

Concordia Theological Monthly

It is scarcely possible to read a theological treatise today without at some point meeting the current distinction between two levels of history, between Historie, and Geschichte, (following the Bultmannians), or between "outer" and "inner" history ( H. Richard Niebuhr), or between the "objective- historical" and the "existential-historical" (John Macquarrie). This distinction has primarily been occasioned by the rise of the historical-critical method in the 19th century, by the failure of the so-called "quest for the historical Jesus," and by the church's apologetic needs in the scientific ("positivistic") era. The primary aim of this paper is critically to examine this …

Concordia Theological Monthly

We salute the new year of God's grace with three articles that deal with time and history. Marvin W. Anderson has addressed himself to a historical question about the origins of the Lutheran Reformation with reference to philological reforms associated with the name of Lorenzo Valla. David W. Lotz looks at the understanding of history associated especially with the name of Rudolf Bultmann. Oscar Cullmann speaks to the whole question of the historical character of the Gospels and the message the church offers to the world in this day.

Sanctification In Romans Chapter Six, R. Larry Shelton Jan 1968

Sanctification In Romans Chapter Six, R. Larry Shelton

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

One of the central themes of St. Paul is the concept of union with Christ. The apostle deals with this subject at length in Romans chapter six. Using the rite of baptism as a basis, Paul shows how the believer becomes united with Christ in an interpersonal sharing of spirits. He then points out the implications of this relationship for sanctification. Thus sanctification is vitally connected with the relationship of the believer to Christ.

A Historical Examination Of The Views Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints And The Reorganized Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints On Four Distinctive Aspects Of The Doctrine Of Deity Taught By The Prophet Joseph Smith, Joseph F. Mcconkie Sr. Jan 1968

Theses and Dissertations

This study makes a consideration of four related concepts of Deity, each of which is accepted as doctrine by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which claims to have received these doctrines from Joseph Smith. On the other hand, each of these concepts is rejected as doctrine by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which claims that Joseph Smith did not teach them.

The pastor who picks up a recent New Testament introduction or theology, a study of the Synoptic Gospels or Acts, or a history of New Testament times may well feel that for him the study of the New Testament has become an arcane and esoteric discipline. The questions asked about the Redaktionsgeschichte of a Gospel, the surprising frequency with which the term gnosis or Gnosticism appears in current literature, or the discussion in many circles of "incipient catholicism" may well lead him to suspect that the whole discipline has now changed.

The Treasure Of The Church, Walter R. Bouman Oct 1967

The Treasure Of The Church, Walter R. Bouman

Concordia Theological Monthly

If being on the cover of Time magazine is the status symbol of our age, then Martin Luther has it made. The issue of March 24, 1967, carried his picture, painted by Time cover artist Lucas Cranach the Elder. There's not much left in the status department, except perhaps being named "Man of the Year" or being belatedly canonized. The latter has been seriously suggested, but the former won't happen. This is 1967, not 1517. Religion could hardly be called decisive in national or international affairs. A protest against the sale of indulgences would be meaningless. Poor Tetzel couldn't give …
