Historical Consideration Of F. C. Baur: His Life, Works, And Theological Thought, Especially In Regard To His Church History And Historical Theology, Steven N. Goetz Jul 1979

Historical Consideration Of F. C. Baur: His Life, Works, And Theological Thought, Especially In Regard To His Church History And Historical Theology, Steven N. Goetz

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines and evaluates F.C. Baur's philosophical and theological ideas as they relate to the writing of Church history and historical theology. The study is undertaken within the context of the problem of the relation between faith and history, which can be stated in more relevant categories for Church historiography as the problem of the relation between subject (faith) and object (history), and proposes that Baur's thought on this problem can be useful for the modern faith/history debate, and especially for the consideration of writing Church history.

The Tradition Of Qoheleth: A Study Of The Background To The Book Of Ecclesiastes, John Orndorff Jul 1979

The Tradition Of Qoheleth: A Study Of The Background To The Book Of Ecclesiastes, John Orndorff

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The book of Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) is perhaps the most intriguing book in the Old Testament. Readers of every age can appreciate its theme, dealing with the futility of seeking to uncover life’s mystery. Yet Qoheleth has been interpreted in many different ways. The interpretations have ranged from tragic pessimism to a triumph of piety over skepticism. It is the contention of this thesis that a proper perspective on Qoheleth’s intention can best be gained in terms of the author’s use of tradition.

Qoheleth displays an awareness of such Hebrew traditions as Wisdom, the Pentateuch, Israelite history and the prophets. Though …

Luther's Attitude Toward Religious Toleration In Light Of His Two Kingdom Doctrine, Richard Elseroad May 1979

Luther's Attitude Toward Religious Toleration In Light Of His Two Kingdom Doctrine, Richard Elseroad

Master of Divinity Thesis

The purpose of the treatise is not simply to list the inconsistencies or contradictions that may exist in Luther's attitudes toward religious toleration (though at times it will become important to come to grips with these variances). No, the real challenge and goal is to uncover Luther’s rationale, if possible, which determines his relations with those he opposes. In other words, it is the attempt to find that consistency or loyalty to principle that will clarify the all too apparent inconsistencies.

The Source And Substance Of Liberalism In The Protestant Episcopal Church, Jo Ann Mcallister Hobart Apr 1979

The Source And Substance Of Liberalism In The Protestant Episcopal Church, Jo Ann Mcallister Hobart

History Theses & Dissertations

This essay seeks to discover to what extent Episcopalians were a part of liberalism's attempt to answer the questions to doctrine presented by science, biblical criticism and the complexities of modern life. Philli.ps Brooks, a popular preacher; Alexander V. G. Allen, an acclaimed historian and seminary teacher", and William S. Rainsford, an architect of the institutional church pattern of social service are discussed as representative figures of those different ministries. These men found answers to the challenges of the late nineteenth century within traditional orthodoxy by interpreting old doctrines by the light of modern knowledge. Because of this they have …

A Beauty Walk A Systematic Compendof Navajo Theology, Walter Snyder Apr 1979

A Beauty Walk A Systematic Compendof Navajo Theology, Walter Snyder

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The doctrine of god will itself be the subject of five chapters. These five chapters will treat the subjects of: The First God; The Former Gods; The Latter Gods; The Present Gods; and, Demonology. There was a serious question whether the last two chapters should come under the doctrine of god or not. The first thought was that they should be under the separate categories of angelology and demonology since they both dealt with spirits. However, in both instances these are spirits that are worshipped. Therefore, the final decision was that they should properly go under the doctrine of god. …

The Immortality Of The Soul Versus The Resurrection Of The Dead, John Sattler Feb 1979

The Immortality Of The Soul Versus The Resurrection Of The Dead, John Sattler

Master of Divinity Thesis

When preparing a presentation on 'death' for a confirmation class, I could find only weak Scriptural proof texts supporting the "traditional" view of death as "separation of body and soul:" Only a few passages spoke of the two nature sin man; namely, body and soul. None spoke in terms of an immortality in man or mentioned a "separation."

The evidence to be cited below will attempt to reveal the problems that are associated with this widely accepted concept of the fate of a Christian at death as it relates to the issue of the immortality of the soul. Several misconceptions …
