The Doctrine Of Divine Immutability As God's Constancy, Tersur Akuma Aben Jan 2001

The Doctrine Of Divine Immutability As God's Constancy, Tersur Akuma Aben

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

A central claim of orthodox Christian theology is that God is immutable. That is, God exists and he is unchangeable. But there are two major problems with this claim: Can a coherent account be given of what it means to say that God is immutable, which affirms God's intimate relatedness to us in our space-time world of change? And, if it can, are there good reasons or arguments to show that God is not immutable? In response to the second problem, I deny that there are good reasons or arguments to show that God is not immutable. I maintain that …

An Analysis And Critique Of Leonardo Boff's Theology And Social Ethics, Luiz Roberto França De Mattos Jan 2001

An Analysis And Critique Of Leonardo Boff's Theology And Social Ethics, Luiz Roberto França De Mattos

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

Leonardo Boff wrestles seriously with two challenging questions, namely, the reality of poverty in today's world and the contemporary ecological crisis. His overall project is to offer a Christian response to them. This project has three cornerstones: first, some Marxist axioms underlying his social analysis; second, an ontology appropriated from Teilhard de Chardin and strongly emphasizing the evolution of the universe; third, an epistemological suspicion of the human ability to know reality in itself. While the importance of Boff's work cannot be denied, the theological price Hoff pays for putting his priority on social ethics is considerable. His dismissal of …

Descensus Christi Ad Inferos: Christ’S Descent To The Dead, Martin F. Connell Jan 2001

Descensus Christi Ad Inferos: Christ’S Descent To The Dead, Martin F. Connell

Theology Faculty Publications

The narrative of Christ’s descent was nearly omnipresent in the early Church. Yet a change of Latin vocabulary from “descensus ad inferos” (Christ’s descent to the dead) to “descensus ad inferna” (Christ’s descent into hell) prompted a change in what was proclaimed. The earlier stratum portrayed Christ preaching to those who, while on earth, did not hear the word of God, while the latter described the reconciliation of sinners. The author here considers the vitality of this creedal statement and what is lost when the descent is absent from Christian experience.

Islamisasi Ilmu Dan Implikasinya Kepada Falsafah Dan Sistem Pendidikan Negara, Sh. Azad Sh. Attar Jan 2001

Islamisasi Ilmu Dan Implikasinya Kepada Falsafah Dan Sistem Pendidikan Negara, Sh. Azad Sh. Attar

Student Works (2000-2009)

The concept of Islamization of knowledge was first introduced by Muhammad Iqbal in 1942 but was first defined by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in 1977. The concept was further elaborated in a 1989 publication by the Institute of Islamic Thought, U. S. A, entitled 0lslamization of Knowledge". If "lslamization" refers to the liberation of man from the magical, mythological animistic, and national-cultural tradition, and from secular reasoning and language, "Islamization of knowledge" refers to the process of recasting knowledge according to the Islamic worldview. This would entail redefining and reordering of data, rethinking the reasoning, reevaluating the conclusion and reprojecting …

All Suffer The Affliction Of The One: Metaphysical Holism And The Presence Of The Spirit, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2001

All Suffer The Affliction Of The One: Metaphysical Holism And The Presence Of The Spirit, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

When Copernicus and Galileo proposed that the earth circled the sun and not the 217 other way around, Christian believers faced the difficult prospect of surrendering a long-held belief that had seemingly undeniable support from the biblical text. After all, Joshua reported that the sun, not the earth, stood still; what could this mean if not that the sun orbited the earth? Today, centuries later, believers unanimously hold a heliocentric view of the solar system and are somewhat embarrassed by the ignorance of our pre-Enlightenment brothers and sisters. Ironically, however, such embarrassment masks the possibility that we ourselves may one …

Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg Jan 2001

Ethics As Grammar: Changing The Postmodern Subject, Brad Kallenberg

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Wittgenstein, one of the most influential, and yet widely misunderstood, philosophers of our age, confronted his readers with aporias—linguistic puzzles—as a means of countering modern philosophical confusions over the nature of language without replicating the same confusions in his own writings. In Ethics as Grammar, Brad Kallenberg uses the writings of theological ethicist Stanley Hauerwas as a foil for demonstrating how Wittgenstein’s method can become concrete within the Christian tradition. Kallenberg shows that the aesthetic, political, and grammatical strands epitomizing Hauerwas’s thought are the result of his learning to do Christian ethics by thinking through Wittgenstein.

Kallenberg argues that …

The Magisterium And Theologians In The Writings Of Avery Robert Dulles, Darius W. Jankiewicz Jan 2001

The Magisterium And Theologians In The Writings Of Avery Robert Dulles, Darius W. Jankiewicz

Dissertations

This study explores Avery Robert Dulles's views regarding the nature of doctrinal authority in the Roman Catholic Church, and particularly the relationship between the hierarchical magisterium and theologians, with special focus on the apparent disparity between his early post-Vatican II views and his recent views.

To attain this goal, Dulles's convictions were considered in the context of his doctrine of the Church, and, whenever relevant, from the perspective of his overall theological system, without neglecting the presuppositions undergirding his ideas and the methodologies used to support them. To highlight contrasting positions, three periods are studied consecutively: the earliest writings, i.e., …
