The town of Puerto Morelos is striving to forward sustainable tourism based on its natural and cultural assets. As a new municipality, it has the chance to shape policy from a relatively blank canvas. This study involved collecting data about the different perspectives of key stakeholders through qualitative interviews and surveys to understand if the views …

Negative Estrangement: Fantasy And Race In The Drow And Drizzt Do’Urden, Steven Holmes Oct 2023

Negative Estrangement: Fantasy And Race In The Drow And Drizzt Do’Urden, Steven Holmes

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

This essay introduces the concept of negative estrangement to help understand current cultural interventions into the norms of depicting fantasy races. First, this essay builds on Shklovsky’s concept of estrangement to describe the literary practice of negative estrangement, wherein artists craft “more evil” foes based on hybridized amalgamations of stereotypes to create antipathy toward a subject, be it monster or fantasy race. This practice is sometimes used in service of confronting the issue of race and racism, despite seeming to reify or rearticulate racist stereotypes.

This essay builds on Tolkien’s argument in favor of creating “more evil” foes to exemplify …

Critical Analysis Of Anti-Asian Hate In The News, Benardo Douglas Relampagos Oct 2023

Critical Analysis Of Anti-Asian Hate In The News, Benardo Douglas Relampagos

Dissertations and Theses

Since 2019, the United States has had an increase in violence against Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities along with an increase of mainstream anti-Asian racist rhetoric. Between 2021 and 2022, The Center for the Study of Hate & Extremism reported an overall 164% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes. While racism against black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) communities has been the topic of an ever-growing body of critical discourse, prior to 2019 few publications had addressed racism and injustice regarding language choices and discourse in the context of anti-Asian rhetoric in the US, specifically regarding the intersection of language …

International Relations From Below: Teaching Absences In International Relations, Tamara Soukotta Oct 2023

International Relations From Below: Teaching Absences In International Relations, Tamara Soukotta

Feminist Pedagogy

For four years (2017-2022) I was part of a teaching team to teach the subject of International Relations (IR) to second-year Bachelor International Studies students. The course was structured to have twelve lectures; these lectures were to be delivered by the course leaders to an audience of 500-800 students. In addition to the lectures, students had four tutorial classes, where the rest of the teaching team worked with smaller groups of students (12-15 students in each group). These classes were designed to help the students link theories and practices. As a woman of colour teaching IR in a Dutch university, …

Crying In The Classroom: Teaching (Through A Lack Of) Racial Empathy, Brittney Miles Oct 2023

Crying In The Classroom: Teaching (Through A Lack Of) Racial Empathy, Brittney Miles

Feminist Pedagogy

Intense emotions in classrooms are often interpreted unfavorably because of how bodies can disrupt a space that centers the mind. However, bodies can also reflect students’ and educators’ emotional relationships with course material. Through an elucidative reflection on the pedagogical power of racialized emotions, this critical commentary considers the transgressive possibilities of racial empathy as a Black feminist epistemology. As a Black woman graduate student instructor, tensions emerge in classrooms around what it may mean when Black students and I are crying, and white students are not. Intense emotions, or the lack thereof, complicate the politics of power, responsibility, emotional …

Interrogating Silences In The Postcolonial Classroom, Sheema Khawar Oct 2023

Interrogating Silences In The Postcolonial Classroom, Sheema Khawar

Feminist Pedagogy

In this paper I explore my experiences as visiting faculty teaching English language and Feminist Studies courses at a private university in Karachi, Pakistan. While balancing these different fields I aimed to integrate feminist pedagogies (Keating, 2007; Hooks,1994; Swarr and Nagar, 2010) and strategize with other politically aligned faculty to draw out important issues in our courses. I was faced with the challenging task of constructing syllabi attendant to the training of students in the ‘canons’ of the field and finding course content that allowed us collectively to engage with critical conversations on regional issues. Formal academic publication processes have …

Review Of Fighting Invisibility: Asian Americans In The Midwest. Rutgers University Press, Xiang Zhou Oct 2023

Review Of Fighting Invisibility: Asian Americans In The Midwest. Rutgers University Press, Xiang Zhou

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Despite the imperative to shed light on the experiences of Asian Americans residing in the Midwest, previous research has predominantly centered around Asians residing on the coasts. This phenomenon, as elucidated by Erika Lee in her concept of “doubly invisible” Midwest Asian Americans, highlights their dual marginalization—they are not only conspicuously absent from mainstream literature but also from the broader discourse on Asian American experiences, which primarily revolves around those on the East and West coasts. However, it is within the heartland of America that we witness one of the most profound transformations in Asian America over the past few …

Book Review: Children Of The Greek Civil War: Refugees And The Politics Of Memory, Victor Bivell Oct 2023

Book Review: Children Of The Greek Civil War: Refugees And The Politics Of Memory, Victor Bivell

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

The book ‘Children of the Greek Civil War’ makes several key steps forward in analyzing the politics and emotions surrounding the 47,000 child refugees of the Greek Civil War. Although the war was between the right-wing Greek Government and the left-wing Greek Communist Party, it drew in a large portion of the ethnic Macedonian population of northern Greece who had been promised greater freedom and ethnic recognition by the communists. Among the book’s key steps forward are its side-by-side and even-handed analysis of how the war affected both the Greek and Macedonian children, its discussion and comparison of the government-backed …
