That James Joyce was concerned that his audience understood Bloom and Stephen were going about lives matched with Ulysses and Telemachus has become clear, but his purpose in doing so is the subject of WILLIAM O'NEILL. Author of short stories, reviews, and an article on Yeats in this journal, O'Neill teaches English at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.
A. CARL BREDAHL develops Sherwood Anderson's alternative to the novel form, a "divided narrative," by examining Winesburg, Ohio. With numerous publications on writers as diverse as Charles Brockden Brown, Herman Melville, Harold Frederic, John Steinbeck, Thomas Wolfe, and …

Egypt And The Soviet Union, 1953-1970, John W. Copp
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to describe and analyze in detail the many aspects of the Soviet-Egyptian friendship as it developed from 1953 to 1970. The relationship between the two is extremely important because it provides insight into the roles of both Egypt and the Soviet Union in both the history of the Middle East and in world politics. The period from 1953 to 1970 is key in understanding the relationship between the two states because it is the period of the genesis of the relationship and a period in which both nations went through marked changes in both …

Wishing to help us see what his words suggest, the poet struggles to give expression to images. W. S. Merwin, explains MARK CHRISTHILF, makes use of the work of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse, among other painters, in bringing to his readers an understanding of what Merwin's generous eye beheld. Poet and critic, Christhilf teaches English at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. He has poetry in Karamu, and is writing a book entitled, W. S. Merwin the Mythmaker.

Three Affiliated Tribes V. Wold Engineering (1986), United States Supreme Court, Sandra Day O'Connor
US Government Documents Related to Indigenous Nations
Three Affiliated Tribes v. Wold Engineering is a case that forced the United States (US) Supreme Court to clarify US Public Law 83-280 (typically referred to as Public Law 280). Due to a lack of clarity in US Public Law 280, when the Three Affiliated Tribes attempted to sue Wold Engineering for breach of contract, North Dakota (ND) state courts told the tribes that they were unable to preside over a case between a sovereign nation and a private business. The ND Supreme Court held that the tribes would have to give up tribal sovereignty if they wanted to try …

Playing JOHN C. BURNHAM's new parlor game, "Who Is Now Great?” unexpectedly forms a negative consensus: the great men and women, like the dinosaurs, seem to belong to an earlier time, not to our own. The author wonders why, and shares his thoughts on the past, present, and future of greatness. Professor of History at The Ohio State University, with a scholarly interest in the history of psychiatry and American medical and social history, Burnham' s most recent book is on the psychoanalyst and physician Jelliffe.

The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner
The American Reaction To Germany's Annexation Of Austria, Mark A. Tarner
Masters Theses
Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938 was the cumulation of almost twenty years of Austrian dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Saint Germain, the lack of consistent political and economic support by the western democracies and the international instability of the 1930s. All these factors worked in favor of pro-Anschluss Germans and Austrians and to the handicap of the allies. Once Adolf Hitler came to power, he drastically changed German policy toward Austria. Anschluss had special significance for Hitler and his decision to abandon an evolutionary revision of Austria's political status to one of radical expansionism and annexation proved fatal …

The Republican Party And Civil Rights, 1877-1976, Gordon E. Sparks
Masters Theses
There have been many works written on both the Republican and the Democratic parties. Many works have also described the problem of civil rights and the historical difficulties blacks have had in an attempt to fit in politically. These works, however, have left out one major aspect of this process. Relationships of blacks to the political parties themsevles must be studied to understand one aspect of their continuous struggle for civil rights in America.
It is time that an overview be done on how the political parties have dealt with the civil rights problem throughout their histories. The Republican party …
Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen
Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis traces the origin, development, and decline, from 1852 to 1904, of Salt Lake County's judicial precincts. A precinct functioned as the basic subdivision of county government. Its boundaries were generally coterminous with those of local communities. It was established to allow for a degree of local control by the people.
Chapter two reveals that precinct justices experienced over time a marked decline in socio-political prominence. This is largely due to legislative statutes that decreased their jurisdictional powers. Chapter three examines the evolution of precinct boundaries. It is demonstrated that geographic distribution of individuals played a major role in …
