The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

BOB J. FRY beckons readers to look beyond the friendly, folksy Garrison Keillor so many have seen in Lake Wobegon Days to glimpse the satire, both gentle and biting, that Keillor offers. Professor of English at Texas Christian University, editor of a book of critical essays on John Dryden's satire, Mac Flecknoe, and author of articles which have appeared in a number of journals, he has twice received teaching awards during his thirty years at TCU, including most recently the Piper Professor Award in 1994 given to just ten Texas educators annually honoring significant contributions in teaching.

John Dewey, Art And Public Life, Mark Mattern Jan 1999

John Dewey, Art And Public Life, Mark Mattern

Political Science Faculty Articles and Research

This article explores, criticizes, and extends John Dewey's arguments about art in relation to public life in a democracy. Dewey believed that art is a potent form of communication through which community is developed and political action undertaken. Although correct, Dewey erased conflict, negotiation and contestation From art, and failed to address the crucial role of power in the world of art. Three distinct kinds of political action through art are developed: pragmatic, deliberative, and confrontational.

The Emergence Of An Ethnic Millenarian Thinking And The Development Of Nationalism In Tahiti, Bruno Saura

Pacific Studies

This article analyzes the emergence in Tahiti of a body of theological and philosophical works written in Tahitian by Duro Raapoto, the leading intellectual of the Protestant Church and one of the best poets of French Polynesia. They constitute a new syncretic and millennialistic rewriting of Tahitian history as well as a rereading of anthropological ideas relative to pre-European society through a reinterpretation of some essential concepts of Polynesian culture. Their author’s objective is to restore the golden age of innocence presented as “the authentic Tahitian religion” and to establish the Kingdom of God within the Tahitian people, “God’s chosen.” …

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

DUANE R. CARR critiques the redneck stereotypes who populate the fiction of Cormac McCarthy as poorly developed grotesques providing little wisdom and much contempt for backcountry folk.
