Nexus is a magazine that began as an insert in the Wright State Guardian student newspaper in 1965 and has since been published semi-regularly. It began only accepting creative writing, but has since expanded to include illustrations, photography and other non-written art forms. Today, it is published in a digital format and accepts submissions from around the country, though it maintains its commitment to the Wright State Community.

Women writers often experience a conflict between traditional feminine roles and the less traditional role of the female writer. And for those writers, like Anne Sexton, who choose not to choose between roles, the result is conflict. This conflict, recognized by previous critics and evident in Sexton's biography and poetry, results in a domestic imagery expressing this vacillation. In this study, submitted in partial fulfillment for the M. A. degree in English, I provide an in-depth study of Sexton's domestic imagery. The poems in To Sing Like The Hermit Thrush are about loss, about realizing how little control we have over our destinies, about death and about the defeat of love. Themes of loss, alienation, stasis, fear, and anger; repeated images such as threatening landscapes ("I study the clouds for a face, / a face like the killer inside, / the one we use on each other") and death scenes ( "we die with every breath / this horrible beauty exacts"); frequent use of city landscapes ("I've been in the city so long/ even birds, children/ sound like small machines"); and …

Biographical Themes In T. S. Eliot's Early Poetry, Jeo-Yong Noh

English Theses & Dissertations

Throughout his career, T. S. Eliot developed his central poetic doctrine, the theory of poetic impersonality. Because of the importance of this theory to Eliot, a question is raised about its importance to his own poetry. Some recent critics, examining Eliot's poetry in the light of his memoirs and biographies, have found that Eliot was not governed by his theory. My thesis is designed to continue this investigation which so far has been done incompletely and randomly.

This investigation finds that Eliot suffered from a congenital double hernia, from his disastrous first marriage, and from general poor health. Furthermore, in …
