The Religious Significance Of Vision And Blindness In Milton's Poetic Works, Elizabeth T. Spiers

Undergraduate University Honors Capstones

Blindness has been used in everything from the Bible to secular works, generally using blindness as examples of healing, spiritual illumination, and the like. John Milton, a blind author, frequently references his blindness in his works. He uses blindness as a concept as a literary device. This thesis aims to show the religious significance of sight and blindness as shown in some of Milton's works. Two sonnets, "When I Consider How My Light is Spent" and "To Syriack Skinner on His Blindness", the drama Samson Agonistes, and the epic poem Paradise Lost are analyzed.

My family is most often, to use Richard Hugo's phrase, "the triggering device" of my poetry. My poems about family are an attempt to understand why there cannot be a complete intimacy. From that dilemma grows the question of what, gave me the idea we were supposed to be hugging and kissing instead of cursing and slamming doors and then deciding we are human after all. The poems in Litotes: of the Unforgotten are about resiliency, the necessary ability to recover or adjust to changes, misfortunes. Themes of loss, of threatening circumstance, of insanity, are repeated; the resiliency, the willingness to rise from the experience appears in the voice which unifies the poems.

The predominant themes in this collection speak not so much of innocence as of experience; however "The Visit" is the only poem with a counterpart, the Spenserian sonnet "Chronicle." The former speaks to the positive side of heritage, the latter the negative. ''Chronicle'' is not too unlike Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz," a serious, …

The Ring of Single Solutions is a cycle of poems divided into three parts. Central to each section is the motif of travel and the image of the circle. The journeys of the personae are physical, intellectual or spiritual and sometimes a combination of all three. These journeys always relate to other experiences which have profoundly affected the way in which the world is viewed, I connect these experiences with the image of the circle. The manuscript, What We Bury: Poems and Epilogue, consists of two major parts. The first is comprised of eighteen poems, selected from the thirty-two that I had written by the end of March.
