The Value Of Friendship For Education, Robert M. Ruehl Jun 2018

The Value Of Friendship For Education, Robert M. Ruehl

Philosophy and Classical Studies Faculty/Staff Publications

In lieu of an abstract, here is the article's first paragraph:

Western philosophers have enthusiastically praised friendship. A few intellectuals have raised doubts about it, such as Thomas Hobbes and Søren Kierkegaard, but friendship has inspired many others, including Aristotle, Francis Bacon, C.S. Lewis, and Mary E. Hunt, who have esteemed its benefits, especially the reciprocal commitment to nurture each friend's 'best self'.

Aristotle On Forming Friendships, Timothy J. Madigan, Daria Gorlova Jun 2018

Aristotle On Forming Friendships, Timothy J. Madigan, Daria Gorlova

Philosophy and Classical Studies Faculty/Staff Publications

In lieu of an abstract, here is the article's first paragraph:

Although he lived long ago, the ethical writings of the Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BCE) still have relevance to the present day, particularly when we want to understand the meaning of friendship. In Books VIII and IX of his work the Nichomachean Ethics (named in honor of both his father and son, who shared the name Nichomachus), Aristotle categorizes three different types of friendship: friendships of utility, friendships of pleasure, and friendships of the good (also known as virtuous friendships). Briefly, friendships of utility are where people are on …

An Uber Ethical Dilemma: Examining The Social Issues At Stake, Florence Chee

School of Communication: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Purpose

This paper aims to engage with the social issues emerging from the increasing reliance upon app-driven services, as they pertain to precarious labor and ethical standpoints in a digital era. Popular ride services such as Uber have been lauded for bringing much needed transportation services that are superior to expensive taxis or unpleasant or inaccessible public transit.

Design/methodology/approach

As a result of over three years of ongoing research and analysis, this paper is a comprehensive assessment of a number of social issues facing the integration of practices both signified and enacted in an economy driven by apps such as …

The Ideologies And Outcomes Of The French And American Revolutions, Donald D. Palmer Jun 2018

The Ideologies And Outcomes Of The French And American Revolutions, Donald D. Palmer

Masters Theses

One effective way to compare the fruits of biblical Christianity with modernism is to contrast the ideologies and outcomes of the American and French Revolutions. Pre-revolutionary America was rich with biblical influence. Adherents of both Protestantism and Deism sought a “Christian society,” and while revolutionaries drew from both biblical Reformation and secular Enlightenment thought, much of the latter was biblical thought in secular form. Ministers employed the Bible extensively to support the Revolution. This relative theological consensus encouraged religious practice and a political system that accommodated dispute. Human rights were secure thanks to man’s subordinate position under God. Even after …

Ang Pagkukuwento Bilang Pagbabalik-Loob: Pagdalumat Sa Halaga Ng “Awit Ng Matandang Marinero” Ni Samuel T. Coleridge Sa Talambuhay Ni Fr. Roque Ferriols, S.J, Preciosa Regina A. De Joya Jun 2018

Ang Pagkukuwento Bilang Pagbabalik-Loob: Pagdalumat Sa Halaga Ng “Awit Ng Matandang Marinero” Ni Samuel T. Coleridge Sa Talambuhay Ni Fr. Roque Ferriols, S.J, Preciosa Regina A. De Joya

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

At the beginning of Roque Ferriols’s autobiography, he remembers the night when he and his father read Samuel T. Coleridge’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” and particularly, how his father translated the English verses to Filipino. This essay explores the significance of Coleridge’s long poem to Ferriols’s reflection on the purpose and structure of his own autobiographical writing, showing how storytelling is not only a means of atonement towards personal salvation but a process in which reconciliation and re-connection with the community can be achieved. Furthermore, I relate Ferriols’s account of the translation of Coleridge’s poem to the philosopher’s effort …

On Deeper Human Dimensions In Earth System Analysis And Modelling, Dieter Gerten, Martin Schönfeld, Bernhard Schauberger Jun 2018

On Deeper Human Dimensions In Earth System Analysis And Modelling, Dieter Gerten, Martin Schönfeld, Bernhard Schauberger

Philosophy Faculty Publications

While humanity is altering planet Earth at unprecedented magnitude and speed, representation of the cultural driving factors and their dynamics in models of the Earth system is limited. In this review and perspectives paper, we argue that more or less distinct environmental value sets can be assigned to religion – a deeply embedded feature of human cultures, here defined as collectively shared belief in something sacred. This assertion renders religious theories, practices and actors suitable for studying cultural facets of anthropogenic Earth system change, especially regarding deeper, non-materialistic motivations that ask about humans' self-understanding in the Anthropocene epoch. We sketch …

Pitong Sulyap Sa Pilosopiya Ng Wika Ni Padre Ferriols, Wilhelm Patrick Joseph S. Strebel Jun 2018

Pitong Sulyap Sa Pilosopiya Ng Wika Ni Padre Ferriols, Wilhelm Patrick Joseph S. Strebel

Philosophy Department Faculty Publications

The Jesuit priest, Roque J. Ferriols is well known in Ateneo de Manila University as the first philosophy professor to teach philosophy in Filipino. Since 1969 until he retired in 2014, he taught all of his philosophy classes, both in the undergraduate and graduate levels, in Filipino. His example was followed by many Ateneo philosophy faculty. Since around the 1990s the number of philosophy classes taught in English and in Filipino had a 50/50 percentage ratio. This ratio continued on to the present time. As the tradition of teaching philosophy in Filipino nears its 50th anniversary in 2019, Ferriols continues …

The Effect Of Maternal Employment On Family Well-Being, Bezawit Teshome Agiro Jun 2018

The Effect Of Maternal Employment On Family Well-Being, Bezawit Teshome Agiro

Dissertations

This dissertation is composed of three essays on the effect of maternal employment on family well-being using data from Early Childhood Longitudinal Study: Kindergarten Class of 2010-11 (ECLS-K: 2011). In general, the findings from this study suggest that the effect of maternal employment on children’s weight status and cognitive development is not significant, but it is significant on mothers’ overall health and psychological well-being.

The first essay re-examines the effect of maternal employment on child obesity by taking a sample of grade 2 children who had at least one younger sibling from the spring 2013 cohort. The study makes use …

What Will Be Best For Me? Big Decisions And The Problem Of Inter‐World Comparisons, Peter Baumann Jun 2018

What Will Be Best For Me? Big Decisions And The Problem Of Inter‐World Comparisons, Peter Baumann

Philosophy Faculty Works

Big decisions in a person's life often affect the preferences and standards of a good life which that person's future self will develop after implementing her decision. This paper argues that in such cases the person might lack any reasons to choose one way rather than the other. Neither preference‐based views nor happiness‐based views of justified choice offer sufficient help here. The available options are not comparable in the relevant sense and there is no rational choice to make. Thus, ironically, in many of a person's most important decisions the idea of that person's good seems to have no application.

Are Illegal Direct Actions By Animal Rights Activists Ethically Vigilante?, Michael P. Allen, Erica Von Essen

Between the Species

Constructed as terrorist, illegal direct actions by animal rights activists have become the subject of draconian law enforcement measures in the US and UK. Some scholars respond to this phenomenon by interpreting such actions to protect vulnerable animals not as terrorist but civilly disobedient. This approach highlights their ethical character, as a normatively relevant consideration in the state’s law enforcement response. Consistent with this approach, we argue that illegal direct actions by animal rights activists are not terrorist, although their motivations are sometimes anti-statist and anarchist. However, we also argue that civil disobedience is an awkward fit for many such …

From Homeland Earth; A New Manifesto For The New Millennium, Morin, Edgar

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Now that the fantastic adventure begun in the 15th century has come to an end, the shout of Columbus’ lookout man takes on at last a planetary meaning: Land! Land!1 Even up to 1950-1960, we were living on a misapprehended Earth, on an abstract Earth. We were living on the Earth as object. By the end of this century, we discovered Earth as system, as Gaia, as biosphere, a cosmic speck—Homeland Earth. Each one of us has a pedigree, a terrestrial identity card. We are from, in, and on the Earth. We belong to the Earth which belongs to …
